<p>Growing up in a family deeply connected to fashion education, I was naturally exposed to the world of pattern making, tailoring, and design from an early age. My father founded Istituto di Moda Burgo in 1961 with the vision of creating a highly structured and professional fashion school in Milan. Over time, I realized that continuing this legacy was not simply a family responsibility, but a mission.</p>
<p>What truly inspired me was seeing how technical education can transform a student’s confidence and professional path. Fashion is often associated only with creativity, but behind every successful garment, there is structure, precision, and method. Preserving and developing the Burgo Method, while opening the school to an increasingly international audience, became my personal commitment.</p>

<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3>
<p>No two days are exactly the same. As Co-Director of Istituto di Moda Burgo, I divide my time between academic supervision, strategic development, and international partnerships.</p>
<p>I often begin the day reviewing current programs, speaking with instructors, and ensuring that our courses maintain the technical standards that define our Milan Fashion School. Later, I may meet with international students, discuss new Fashion Summer Courses in Italy, or work on expanding collaborations abroad.</p>
<p>A significant part of my work also involves listening to students, teachers, and partners, because maintaining excellence requires constant adaptation without compromising quality.</p>
<h3>Why do you do what you do?</h3>
<p>I believe strongly in technical education. In today’s fashion world, creativity alone is not enough. Students need solid foundations in pattern making, garment construction, and proportion.</p>
<p>What motivates me is seeing students arrive uncertain and leave with concrete skills and professional confidence. Fashion education, when structured correctly, provides both artistic freedom and technical discipline.</p>
<p>Continuing and evolving a method developed over decades is not about tradition alone — it is about responsibility toward future generations of designers and pattern makers.</p>
<h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3>
<p>My favorite part is witnessing transformation. When a student completes their first accurate pattern or constructs a garment that fits perfectly, you can see the shift in their attitude.</p>
<p>I also appreciate the international dimension of our school. Welcoming students from different countries who come to study fashion in Milan brings energy and cultural exchange into our classrooms. It reminds us that fashion is a global language, but technical mastery is universal.</p>
<h3>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h3>

<h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3>
<p>One of the main challenges is balancing tradition and innovation. The Burgo Method is highly structured and precise, but the fashion industry evolves rapidly. Our responsibility is to maintain technical rigor while adapting to contemporary needs.</p>
<p>Another challenge is maintaining quality while growing internationally. We overcome this by standardizing our methodology, training instructors carefully, and keeping class sizes limited. Growth must never compromise educational standards.</p>
<h3>What are some current projects you are working on?</h3>
<p>Currently, we are expanding our international programs and strengthening our Fashion Summer Courses in Italy, particularly in specialized areas such as Theatre Costume Pattern Making and advanced tailoring.</p>
<p>We are also working on reinforcing partnerships abroad and continuing to modernize our communication strategy while preserving our identity as a serious and career-focused Fashion School in Milan.</p>
<h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>I would say: be open, be patient, and focus on building strong foundations. In fashion, long-term success is built on discipline and technical knowledge.</p>

<p>I hope participants leave our programs with two essential outcomes: technical competence and professional confidence. Fashion can be inspiring and creative, but without structure and discipline it remains incomplete.<br><br>At Istituto di Moda Burgo, we want students to truly understand garment construction, proportion, and pattern making at a professional level. Whether they attend a full-time program or a Fashion Summer Course in Italy, they should leave with concrete skills they can immediately apply.</p>
<p>Beyond technical ability, I hope they develop a stronger sense of responsibility toward their work. Precision, patience, and consistency are values that extend far beyond fashion — they shape a professional mindset.</p>
<h3>How do you help support participants?</h3>
<p>Support begins with structure. We maintain small class sizes so instructors can follow students individually and monitor their progress closely. Our programs are designed to be progressive, allowing participants to build skills step by step rather than feeling overwhelmed.</p>
<p>We also provide a welcoming international environment. Many of our students travel to Milan from abroad, so we guide them not only academically but also in adapting to a new cultural and educational setting.</p>
<p>As Co-Directors, my sister Monica and I oversee academic standards directly to ensure quality and consistency. Our goal is not only to teach techniques, but to create a supportive and serious learning environment where students can grow confidently.</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3>
<p>Traveling abroad expands perspective. In fashion especially, exposure to different cultures, aesthetics, and traditions enriches creativity and professional awareness. Studying in Milan, for example, means experiencing a city where craftsmanship, industry, and design coexist daily.</p>
<p>When students leave their comfort zone, they develop adaptability, independence, and a deeper understanding of global standards. These qualities are essential in today’s fashion industry, which operates internationally.</p>
<p>Experiencing new cultures also fosters humility and curiosity — two qualities that are fundamental for any designer or pattern maker who wants to grow continuously.</p>
<h3>What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?</h3>
<p>My advice is to choose with intention. Going abroad should not be a trend or a spontaneous decision — it should align with your long-term goals. Research the institution carefully, understand the methodology, and evaluate whether the program offers real skills rather than superficial experiences.</p>
<p>Be prepared to work hard. Studying abroad is exciting, but it also requires discipline and adaptability. You will face new systems, languages, and expectations. Embrace that challenge.</p>
<p>Finally, be open. The greatest growth often happens outside the classroom, through cultural exchange and personal resilience. When approached seriously, studying abroad can become a defining moment in both professional and personal development.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>

<p>Meaningful travel is not simply moving from one country to another; it is about transformation. It means stepping outside your comfort zone and allowing yourself to be challenged intellectually and culturally.</p>
<p>For students, especially in fields like fashion, meaningful travel means experiencing a different creative environment, understanding new aesthetics, and observing how craftsmanship and industry operate in another context. Studying in Milan, for example, allows participants to see firsthand how heritage and innovation coexist in the fashion capital of the world.</p>
<p>To me, meaningful travel is successful when a person returns home not only with new technical skills, but with a broader perspective, greater independence, and a deeper sense of responsibility toward their profession.</p>

<p>Ethical global engagement means respecting both students and host communities. International education should never be transactional; it should create mutual value. Institutions must provide structured, high-quality education while being transparent about expectations and outcomes.</p>
<p>For us, ethical engagement also means maintaining consistent academic standards across all programs, whether local or international. Growth should never compromise quality.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>A desire to learn Spanish and be able to see a part of the world and experience a culture and life philosophy different from my own. My hope always was to grow as a human being and to be able to broaden my horizon and learn from people I usually wouldn't have crossed paths with. To live close to a family and contribute to a project with passionate locals had been a dream of mine for a long time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Growing up in Norway, I have always felt very protected from the real world, and I have felt that in order to understand the world, I need to be closer to people from cultures and countries far away from my own.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The one taking me to Ecuador, which was the country I most wanted to get to know. I heard so much about this country and its people, and to me, it seemed like the country and experience that would take me closest to the real life of the people and culture.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The opportunity to work both with children and the elderly was so rewarding and to live with a host family that has become my own family has been the best thing that ever happened to me.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Ecuador?</h3>
<p>The people and their welcoming spirit. The possibilities to really get to know a country from the inside through my host family is something I am forever grateful.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Ecuadorian soul is truly unique, and every day feels like being in a telenovela. They really know how to cherish every second and make the best out of what every day brings—even a trip to the grocery store or a traffic jam is fun in Ecuador.&nbsp;</p>
<p>These are experiences I try my best to maintain when going home to Europe, where people often get very stuck in their routine and forget about everyday magic. The small encounters with people that change your life forever. Like when your host mom brings you to her hairdresser, and suddenly you are attending a birthday party in a stranger's home.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>

<p>The very close encounter with the locals. You truly feel like you are a part of a real Ecuadorian family and their everyday joy and drama.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Bolivar Foundation makes you feel like family, and they include you in every single part of their life. From learning salsa, preparing lunch for an elderly centre, celebrating birthdays, and going on party buses.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I would never in my life have dreamt of being this involved in the everyday life in a culture so far from my own, and learning the language and culture as I have.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/fundacion-bolivar-education/programs/experience-ecuador-with-volunteer-opportunities-193700 rel="" target="_self" class="link">program</a>?</h3>
<p>In everything!&nbsp;</p>
<p>Choosing the project that best suited me, learning the language, showing me their country, including me in their everyday life, taking me to the hospital when I got sick, listening to me complaining about my boyfriend at home, comforting me when I lost a family member, making me juices to feel better after a hangover, teaching me the traditional way of cleaning my energy with a raw egg, including me in every single activity in my host-famiilys life from taking the dogs to the hairdresser, attending a funeral, birthday parties and grocery shopping.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had stayed longer, and I wish I had gone sooner. This experience is something that would create world peace if everyone had done it. The knowledge and understanding you get about different cultures and people is something that can't be taught in a university, and it can't be lived without traveling.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>Waking up to my host mom running around to get the kids to school, speaking in Spanish - I would lie in bed listening to learn new words and phrases my teacher wouldn't have taught me. Having breakfast with the kids and maybe playing tennis in the garage before my brother left for school.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Going to the foundation for my private Spanish class, where my teacher and I would talk about everything from politics to my boyfriend. Then, I would volunteer at an elderly centre where I would help organize small activities and listen to the elderly`s incredible life stories.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It truly felt rewarding to have the time to both spend quality time with someone, acknowledge their life experience as well as I got to practice this incredible language. It truly gave my Spanish classes a whole new dimension.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In the afternoon, the Foundation had loads of activities to bring the volunteers together. Cooking classes, salsa dancing, and birthday celebrations. I didn't want the days to end.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I enjoyed traveling, spending as much time with my host family as possible, and also to learn to dance salsa.&nbsp;</p>
<p>A lot of my free time was spent in the salsa school and salsa bars. I really enjoyed practicing Spanish with the locals, the kids in my family, and being in such a unique country for traveling. Most weekends were spent visiting.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>

<p>I stayed with a family that included me in every single aspect of their life and traditions. I am so grateful for everything they did for me, and these experiences have given me a second family for life.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I would never have been this integrated in the culture or learned this much Spanish if it weren't for them.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Embrace every second. Try to come without too many expectations, because your experience will be different from what you can imagine.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Let the people, culture, and project guide you, and don't try to recreate the life you have at home in your new country. Let go and fully live in your new reality - although some things may drive you insane. Like waiting for people in Ecuador, most memorable moments I had were small, unexpected moments when you talk to someone in line at the bank or waiting for your host mom at the hairdresser's.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Would you recommend your program to others? Why?</h3>
<p>It has changed my life forever, and I think everyone should have this experience. We have so much to learn from people in "less developed" (or more developed - depends on how you look at it).&nbsp;</p>
<p>I feel my own country has gone to a point of economic development where human interaction is no longer needed. Everything is done on your phone, and "the state" takes care of everything.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It is something very necessary and beautiful in being needed by your neighbors or coworkers. To belong to something.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>Broadening your horizons. Understanding the world and the people you share the planet with. Bursting your bubble and making you a more diverse human being seing things from a different side.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Maybe you're able to understand people in your own country a little bit better, and bring the good from the host country into your life at home.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>I try my best to bring Ecuador into everything I do. I try to smile at people, invite people into my life, and don't get stuck in a routine where I put myself first. If someone needs it, we will always find room around the table, and we will always have enough to share.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is something that came so naturally in Ecuador, but is hard to maintain in Europe since it is so far away from our culture. I love how people are dear to approach and help each other, and I try my best to talk to strangers and share moments with as many people as I can.</p>

<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel to me means sharing experiences with other people. It means giving as well as receiving and trying to bring joy into other people's lives when you visit them. not only being a tourist, but also leaving money in another country.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Travels should bridge the gaps between cultures in a world that is increasingly polarized. We need each other.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I've always loved travelling, and after completing my bachelor's degree, I wanted to go on some solo adventures—especially since my original exchange plans were cancelled due to COVID. I wanted to immerse myself in the Italian culture and language, not just as a visitor to the main cities, but also to create meaningful experiences while exploring lesser-known areas!</p>

<p>I chose Joinki because it was a great opportunity to explore the amazing Trentino Alto-Adige while making meaningful connections with my host family and their community.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It was my first time travelling so far on my own, but I always felt safe and well looked after, especially because Sabrina from Joinki was informative and communicative throughout the whole process. I had never heard of Trentino before and probably would not have been able to create such amazing memories without Joinki!</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Italy?</h3>
<p>It's hard to choose just one, but I loved the community and nature in Trentino! It is truly such a beautiful place, with the mountains and the lakes sprawling all over; it's still an unforgettable image in my mind.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The community was also so welcoming and warm, and I will always treasure the memories I have made going to the gelateria, having fun at the summer town party, and playing card games (among many more memories!)</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>My host family!! I am so grateful to Sabrina from Joinki for matching me with my host family, because they looked after me so well, and they always made me feel welcome. Even though at some times I was a little shy, they helped me get out of my shell and facilitated amazing experiences for me, such as cycling through the valleys, going to the opera, and hiking in the mountains! I always felt at home, and I also felt very welcomed by their extended family and friends!</p>

<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>Sabrina from Joinki was amazing! She always checked in on me and also took me out to explore other areas of the region, introducing me to other members of the program.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I really appreciated how communicative she was throughout the whole process, from our online calls to meet each other, to matching me with my host family (also facilitating calls with them prior to my program), and throughout my stay in Trentino.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I could've stayed longer! As it was my first time travelling alone, I wasn't so confident going on adventures on my own until I started to feel more confident at the end of the experience. I wish I was there longer so I could've also done some more exploring on my own, perhaps to other valleys.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>In the morning, I would have breakfast, then start the day teaching English with one of the members of my host family (they would take turns because everyone was at a different level).</p>
<p>Afterwards, we would have lunch altogether, sitting inside occasionally, but mostly outdoors to enjoy the beautiful views! As a treat, in the afternoon, I would walk to the gelateria for a nice cup of gelato, and relax until dinnertime.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Some days we would go out and do a special activity as well!</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I loved learning new recipes with my host family! Prior to my experience, I had never tried piadina, canederli, or spetzl before, and now I love eating them, even making some of those dishes myself at home!&nbsp;</p>
<p>I also enjoyed exploring the mountains and the lake with my host family and their pets- especially since I never grew up with a pet!</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>

<p>I stayed in my host family's house, and it was so nice and peaceful. My favourite part was the beautiful view they had outside, as you could see apple orchards amongst the mountains. I had my own roo,m and it was very clean and tidy- and I enjoyed spending time with my host family in the living room and the kitchen!</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/joinki-the-culture-connector/programs/exchange-and-experience-italian-lifestyles-with-joinki-142274 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Exchange and Experience Italian Lifestyles</a> before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Time will fly much faster than you think, so please try to make the most of it!!! There are still so many things I didn't have time to do, but I also have no regrets because I have made so many cherished memories with wonderful people!!&nbsp;</p>
<p>I'd also recommend learning a bit of Italian before the programme, because even if your host family can speak your language, it'll help with communicating with the broader community!</p>
<h3>Would you recommend your program/provider to others? Why?</h3>
<p>I would highly recommend Joinki because it is a wonderful and rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the Trentino culture! It is well-organised, and Joinki makes you feel supported throughout the whole process, so if you are afraid to take the leap to travel alone or in an unfamiliar place, they will make you feel safe and welcomed!</p>
<h3>What do you feel is the biggest benefit of traveling abroad?</h3>
<p>One of the biggest benefits of travelling abroad is being able to expand not only one's own world knowledge and cultural understanding but also the knowledge and understanding of others, by bridging potential gaps.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Additionally, I feel like travelling abroad makes one feel more fulfilled as you get to create unforgettable memories in incredible places.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>

<p>I've continued my journey abroad, even after my program with Joinki, working in other areas of Italy, then to Korea, and now I live in Denmark! It has changed the trajectory of my life completely because I was once too scared to travel abroad alone, yet through these experiences, I have built up my confidence and the competencies that continue to help me in my current adventures!</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel means going beyond just 'seeing' and 'visiting'; instead, meaningful travel is 'doing' and 'experiencing'- such as by immersing oneself in the community instead of just passing by.&nbsp;</p>
<p>When someone travels meaningfully, they simultaneously make an impact on the environment around them and are impacted by it too.</p>

<p>Working with Engineering Without Borders Argentina showed me that engineering is ultimately about service, especially to communities facing the greatest challenges. I witnessed how technical knowledge, when guided by ethics and social awareness, can become a powerful force to reduce inequality.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My own experience revealed that traditional engineering education often prioritizes standards over people. This realization inspired me to create CHE with a dual purpose: to strengthen community-led development in vulnerable contexts while shaping engineers who are socially responsible, ethically grounded, and committed to building a more just world.</p>
<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3>
<p>As CHE is in its early stages, my workdays are focused on building the organizational and operational foundations for long-term impact. This includes setting up administrative and legal frameworks, coordinating closely with local partners, and designing the structure for upcoming volunteering programs launching later this year.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the same time, I dedicate significant effort to strategic outreach—developing partnerships with international platforms, universities, and Engineering Without Borders networks worldwide to ensure the programs attract engaged, values-driven participants and are positioned for sustainable growth.</p>

<h3>Why do you do what you do?</h3>
<p>I do this work because I believe meaningful development happens when people, knowledge, and responsibility come together. I’ve seen how well-intentioned projects can fail when communities are not truly involved, and how powerful change can be when they are.&nbsp;</p>
<p>What drives me is helping create experiences that connect technical skills with real human needs—supporting communities while enabling future professionals to understand their role, privilege, and responsibility in shaping a more equitable world.</p>
<h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3>
<p>My favorite part of this work is still ahead: connecting all the pieces. Seeing students apply engineering ethically and professionally in real-world contexts, fully understanding the community process behind each project, and transforming theory into hands-on practice.&nbsp;</p>
<p>When learning, community engagement, and impact come together, the work gains meaning—not as isolated tasks, but as part of a shared, human-centered process.</p>
<h3>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h3>
<p>As a civil engineer, I regularly draw on my experience coordinating construction-related tasks across different contexts. I’ve led projects both in professional settings—working with skilled construction teams—and within Engineering Without Borders Argentina, where I coordinated volunteers who were often new to tools, construction processes, and on-site work. This has strengthened my ability to adapt technical knowledge to diverse skill levels while maintaining safety, quality, and purpose.</p>
<p>My international background also plays a key role. Having lived in the Netherlands for nearly eight years, I work comfortably across languages and cultures, and I’m geographically and professionally close to universities and organizations that can meaningfully contribute to initiatives like CHE. This perspective helps me bridge academic environments, international partners, and community-based projects effectively.</p>
<h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3>
<p>At this stage, my main challenge is building participation for a new program. Within that, the most complex aspect is explaining to universities and partner organizations why this volunteering experience has a participation fee. This is a conscious decision and not simply related to compensating my work.</p>
<p>I address this by clearly communicating the value behind the structure: a well-designed program that combines theoretical preparation and hands-on practice within a legal, ethical, and safe framework. The fee supports proper planning, on-site coordination, risk management, and long-term community benefit—ensuring that participants learn responsibly while communities engage in projects that are meaningful and sustainable.</p>
<h3>What are some current projects you are working on?</h3>
<p>At this point, no projects are on running stage. I am, as mentioned before, busy with the preparation of the program, both with local NGO (EWB Argentina) and potential partners (Universities and other EWB along the world).&nbsp;</p>
<p>My project is the first program that would take place between June and July this year (2026).</p>

<h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>I would tell my pre-travel self to approach volunteering with an open mind: to listen more and arrive with fewer personal expectations. I’ve learned that volunteering is not about “helping” others, but about contributing a small, meaningful piece within a much larger process toward a more just world.</p>
<p>I would remind myself that my role is just one grain of sand, valuable only when understood in its real context and impact. Valuing processes over immediate results, being patient, and adapting to different cultural realities are essential.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ultimately, these experiences are as transformative for the volunteer as they are for the communities involved — and they help us all build a better world to live in.</p>

<p>By connecting education with real-world community projects, CHE gives a complete sense of purpose to engineering, fostering both personal growth and sustainable social impact.</p>

<p>Volunteers should choose CHE because our programs go beyond traditional volunteering. We combine hands-on engineering experience with ethical, socially responsible practices, and every project is co-created with the community from day one. <p>I hope to expand CHE’s programs to engage more students internationally, offering experiences that combine technical training with social impact. My goal is to build a model where volunteers, universities, and local communities collaborate to create projects that are sustainable, ethically grounded, and empowering.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ultimately, I want CHE to cultivate socially responsible engineers while making tangible contributions to communities around the world.</p>

<p>I hope participants leave with a deep understanding of the true meaning of engineering: that it exists to serve communities and must be designed with them from day one. Beyond gaining practical skills, they experience the power of ethical, socially responsible work, seeing firsthand how their efforts create real impact.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the same time, they immerse themselves in a vibrant culture, discovering a beautiful country and its people, making the journey both transformative and unforgettable.</p>
<h3>How do you help support participants?</h3>
<p>Even before programs officially launch, CHE supports participants indirectly by working closely with partner universities and organizations. We ensure these institutions understand the program’s goals, safety protocols, and learning objectives, so they can accurately communicate this to prospective volunteers.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This approach helps participants enter the program well-informed and confident, maximizing both their learning and the community impact of the projects.</p>
<h3>What questions do participants often ask you, and how do you typically respond?</h3>
<p>Organizations and universities often ask about safety, costs, and the meaningful impact of the programs. I explain how CHE designs experiences ethically and responsibly, combining hands-on learning with community-led projects. I clarify the purpose of program fees, which cover materials, logistics, and participant safety, and emphasize that volunteers contribute to sustainable outcomes rather than just performing tasks.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This guidance ensures institutions can accurately inform prospective participants and set clear expectations.</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3>
<p>Traveling abroad and experiencing new cultures can offer incredible opportunities for growth, but the key is an open mind. Volunteers who approach new communities with curiosity and humility gain empathy, cultural awareness, and a deeper understanding of local contexts.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Immersing yourself—whether abroad or at home—teaches that meaningful solutions come from listening, collaboration, and engagement, helping you become a more socially responsible and effective contributor.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel goes far beyond simply visiting new places, taking photos, or checking destinations off a list. It is about immersing oneself in a culture, community, and environment with genuine curiosity, openness, and respect. Traveling meaningfully means approaching each experience with humility, listening carefully to local voices, and observing the world around you without imposing preconceived notions. It is about trying to understand the history, values, and daily realities of the people you encounter, as well as reflecting on your own assumptions, privileges, and worldview.</p>
<p>This kind of travel encourages deep personal growth, as it challenges us to step out of comfort zones, question our biases, and engage with complexity rather than seeking simple answers. It allows for authentic connections with people and communities, fostering empathy, cultural awareness, and a sense of shared humanity. Meaningful travel also recognizes that our presence has an impact, and it encourages us to act thoughtfully and respectfully, even in small interactions.</p>
<p>Ultimately, meaningful travel transforms both the traveler and the places visited. It teaches patience, adaptability, and attentiveness, and it reminds us that learning happens not just in classrooms or books, but through real experiences, conversations, and immersion. For me, the most rewarding journeys are those that leave you changed—more aware, more connected, and more inspired to contribute positively to the world. Traveling in this way is not just about exploring geography; it is about exploring perspectives, values, and the shared challenges and beauty of the human experience.</p>

<h3>What issues do you see in the world of international education that don’t line up with your values and expectations for mutually beneficial &amp; educational relationships between providers/programs and the communities in which they are located within?</h3>
<p>One major issue I’ve observed is that international education programs often treat students as isolated learners, disconnected from the real context of the communities they aim to serve. I’ve seen organizations and universities design projects for communities they barely know—sometimes visiting only briefly, or not at all—and then returning to their own offices to develop solutions focused on efficiency, metrics, or resource rationalization.&nbsp;</p>
<p>While these approaches may appear “effective” on paper, they often overlook the human and cultural dimensions that are essential for meaningful, sustainable impact. The voice of the community itself is frequently minimized or absent, which undermines both the ethical foundation of the program and its long-term success.</p>
<p>At CHE, we approach this differently: every project is co-created with the community from day one. Local participants are involved in identifying needs, proposing solutions, and guiding implementation. This ensures that educational experiences for volunteers are not only technically rigorous but also ethically grounded, culturally aware, and socially responsible.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I believe international education should prioritize mutual learning, listening, and respect, so that both students and communities benefit in a way that is sustainable, meaningful, and just.</p>
<h3>What does ethical global engagement mean to you?&nbsp;</h3>
<p>Ethical global engagement means approaching every international experience with respect, humility, and a commitment to genuine collaboration. It’s not enough to “help” or complete tasks; engagement must be guided by the needs, voices, and agency of the communities involved.</p>
<p>For me, ethical engagement combines technical skills with social awareness: ensuring that every intervention, project, or learning opportunity is culturally sensitive, participatory, and sustainable. It requires listening first, acting second, and always reflecting on the broader social, environmental, and ethical implications of one’s work.</p>
<p>At CHE, we embed these principles in every program, demonstrating that engineering and volunteering are most meaningful when they serve communities in ways that are equitable, respectful, and long-lasting.</p>

<p>For CHE, strong program-community relations are built on trust, respect, and shared ownership. The community should be involved from day one, actively participating in identifying challenges, proposing solutions, and guiding project execution. Transparency, clear communication, and responsiveness to local perspectives are essential.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Volunteers and students benefit most when they see the full cycle of engagement—learning how decisions are made, understanding the cultural context, and witnessing the tangible impact of their contributions. Programs succeed when they are not just about completing tasks but about fostering partnerships that empower communities, enhance learning, and create meaningful, sustainable change.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Working with Retiros del Alma and now Retiros del Búho continues to inspire and fill me with passion. I care deeply for each group, doing my best to ensure everything is well for the people who come to visit us, making their experience as meaningful, welcoming, and nurturing as possible.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I work closely as part of a team with other members of the association—something essential to us and reflected in everything we offer from our space.</p>
<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3>
<p>A normal working day includes a part of office work, where tasks related to the SEO of our project are developed, along with online marketing and responding to emails, as well as preparing for the different events that take place throughout the year and during the season.</p>
<p>On the other hand, there is also a physical side to the work, focused on preparing the space to welcome and host each group we receive.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Why do you do what you do?</h3>
<p>I have been carrying out this work for years, and it continues to inspire and motivate me. As long as that remains true, I will keep moving forward with it. I believe this is important in every activity—and especially in the work we do in our lives—since it occupies a significant number of our day-to-day hours.</p>
<h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3>
<p>My favorite part of this work is the organizational side and all aspects related to logistics. I also really enjoy the creative side—when new ideas arise and we get to develop and implement them together as a team. I truly find these parts of the project very fulfilling and enjoyable.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As we are a team, we also delegate the different activities according to each person’s strengths. In this way, each member gets to focus on the part they enjoy most, as it aligns with their skills and standout abilities.</p>

<h3>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h3>
<p>All the knowledge I have gained throughout my life, both personally and professionally, has always been extremely valuable. Having lived abroad for some years and having worked with international families and clients has given me many tools that support and enrich the work I do today.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Having lived in other cultures also broadens your field of vision. It gives you powerful tools for growth on every level, and above all, it nurtures an open mind. Being in contact with other languages and cultures is always a great source of richness.</p>
<h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3>
<p>When you work with people or host groups, many of the situations you face are related to human interaction. We are all different, with our own ways of functioning and our own points of view. Having strong social skills is essential, as it helps you navigate and resolve any challenges that may arise in those interactions.</p>
<h3>What are some current projects you are working on?</h3>
<p>At the moment, we are working with our association on the areas that correspond to me for the 2026 program: two international wellbeing trips and retreats, several wellbeing retreats at our finca, and our first immersive Spanish course, which we hope will expand its dates in 2027.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I have also been deeply involved in the project of transitioning to our new website and developing a new image. Alongside this, we continue to hold our regular classes throughout the year, and our space is also available for rental to other facilitators who need a place to offer their knowledge and skills.</p>
<h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>I believe that before traveling, it’s important to have information about the place that will host you, the people you will be living with, and the project you will be involved in. It’s also important to understand the geographical location you’re going to and the cultural aspects you should keep in mind while living in that area.</p>
<h3>What makes Retiros del Búho special?</h3>
<p>What makes our organization special is, without a doubt, our location. Being based in the province of Cádiz—so well known for its beaches and often referred to as “the Silver Cup” or the Costa de la Luz—is a great advantage.</p>
<p>We are also located on a finca surrounded by beautiful natural surroundings, with easy access, in a quiet neighborhood close to the stunning La Barrosa Beach and next to Pinar del Hierro. This setting makes it especially attractive for spending a week of learning, rest, and true immersion in the language.</p>
<h3>Why should someone choose Retiros del Búho over competitors?</h3>
<p>I believe that the ten years of experience we have hosting intimate groups—mainly focused on wellbeing and personal growth—have given us valuable tools to diversify into this field of language learning.</p>
<p>I was dedicated to teaching languages in the past, and my colleague Mercedes is currently devoted to it, being the lead teacher of our courses.</p>
<p>We believe that creating a small family environment, and offering people not just simple language classes but also a true immersion into the culture—along with the comfort of feeling held within the group—is deeply important to us, and to me personally.</p>

<h3>What makes Retiros del Búho easy to market to potential participants?</h3>
<p>As we mentioned at the beginning, our location in the south of Spain makes our organization especially easy to market to potential participants. The climate—particularly during the seasons when we offer our immersive courses—is a major advantage.</p>
<p>Having the beach and the coastline nearby, being in a region that is internationally well known, and regularly welcoming visitors from many different countries makes it, we believe, highly attractive for those wishing to spend a week immersed in the language, the culture, and the learning experience.</p>
<h3>What is Retiros del Búho's mission and how do you continue to work toward it?</h3>
<p>Our mission is to offer a space where each person can, from a place of calm, do what they have come to do—in this case, to learn and to immerse themselves in a culture and a language.</p>
<p>We have always worked toward this goal, and it remains our commitment: to hold that space and make it possible for every individual who visits us to truly achieve their experience of learning, connection, and immersion.</p>
<h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h3>
<p>We hope participants are able to put into practice the Spanish language skills they have acquired. If they join as beginners, we want them to truly feel that they have learned and that they can start expressing themselves and navigating the first steps of the language with confidence.<br><br>And beyond the learning, we hope they genuinely enjoy the place—our space, our city, and the surrounding area—fully experiencing all that Cádiz has to offer to those who visit.</p>
<h3>What questions do participants often ask you, and how do you typically respond?</h3>
<p>One of the main concerns participants often have is the language level within the group. For this reason, we prefer to divide groups according to different levels—from complete beginners who need to start from zero, to those who already have some skills, and even advanced participants who wish to refine and expand their everyday vocabulary and expressions.</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3>
<p>Traveling is, in itself, a whole experience. <h3>Why do you think learning a new language is important?</h3>
<p>Learning a new language is important because it opens the door to new ways of thinking, communicating, and understanding the world. It allows you to connect more deeply with other cultures and the people who belong to them, creating bridges that go beyond words.</p>
<p>It also strengthens cognitive skills, builds confidence, and invites personal growth. More than just a practical tool, a language becomes a living experience—one that expands your perspective and enriches both your personal and professional life.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Traveling with intention. It’s not only about visiting a place, but about truly connecting with it—its people, its culture, its language, and its way of life.</p>
<p>It means allowing the journey to transform you in some way: learning, growing, and returning home with a wider perspective. Meaningful travel invites presence, respect, and openness—turning each experience into something that enriches both the traveler and the place that welcomes them.</p>

<h3>What does ethical global engagement mean to you?</h3>
<p>Means relating to other cultures and communities with respect, awareness, and responsibility. It involves approaching every experience with humility—recognizing that we are guests in someone else’s home and way of life.</p>
<p>It also means supporting local communities, honoring their traditions, and contributing in ways that are fair and conscious. Ethical engagement is about creating genuine exchange—where learning, benefit, and respect flow in both directions.</p>
<h3>What qualities in program &amp; host community relations are important to you? (And your organization?)</h3>
<p>Mutual respect, open communication, and trust. Building genuine relationships with the host community is essential, as it creates a foundation where collaboration can grow naturally and sustainably.</p>
<p>We also value cultural sensitivity, active listening, and reciprocity—ensuring that the exchange benefits everyone involved. For us, it’s important that programs feel integrated into the local environment, honoring its rhythms, traditions, and people while creating meaningful connections for participants.</p>
