A Guide to Adventure Travel in India
Most Adventurous Places
With the variety of climates, terrains, and cultures throughout the entire country, it’s no surprise that India adventures have been growing in popularity.
The Himalayan Region is heavily-toured amongst adventurers due to the endless amount of possible activities. Snow-capped mountain peaks, icy river walks, and flower-infused valleys in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh offer mountaineering and trekking opportunities for beginner to advanced adventure seekers.
After spending a few days in the capital city of New Delhi, whirling around the streets in auto rickshaws and witnessing the splendor of managed chaos, your desert adventure awaits just west in Rajasthan. Safari during sunrise in Jaipur and try hot air ballooning, one of the newest adventure activities in India, during sunset in Pushkar. Pack your camera and head to Ranthambore National Park, one of the best spots to view tigers in their natural jungle habitat.
If you’re a water enthusiast, Goa is what you’ve been dreaming of for adventure tours in India. Stretching along the western coast, Goa is a popular destination for those looking for a sandy and festive experience. From more common options such as parasailing, white water rafting, and snorkeling, to newer water sports such as kite surfing, you will have an action-packed trip.
Popular Adventure Types
With the amount of available adventure travel in India, an organized program can help you maximize your time and resources while getting the most out of your experience.
Trekking and hiking are extremely popular amongst both locals and travelers; hiking the trails will allow you to get up close and personal with rare wildlife, local villages, and archeological sites. Experience the spirituality of India by trekking to some of the most treasured temples and partake in a ceremony. March is one of the best times to go hiking in India, as you’ll have clear skies and will avoid the humid monsoon months.
If you’re looking for a dual skill-building and adventure-taking opportunity, photography programs are calling your name. The colors of India’s clothing, nature, and shrines are enough to keep the shutters clicking. Live amongst locals and create a photo diary of students, monks, cows, and more, then shift your focus to the country’s unique holidays (such as Holi’s kaleidoscope of colors).
Another dual purpose choice for India adventures comes in eco-travel opportunities. Experience nature in its purest form while educating yourself and others on conservation. Work on research projects with tigers and elephants, and learn how these creatures are struggling to survive.
Anticipated Costs
India is one of the most vibrant and affordable countries for traveling and living. Unless you’re solely staying in big cities and luxury hotels, traveling in comfort will not break the bank. Flight costs will definitely be your biggest expense, followed by the latest popular India adventures, like hot air ballooning or any private excursions.
The exchange rate is in your favor for adventure tours in India. You could spend just $1 or $2 on a standard lunch or up to $10 on a nicer dinner. Stay away from international chains when buying toiletries or clothes and you will spend less than half the amount you would back home.
Participating in organized adventure travel programs in India will help cover a lot of costs. By paying upfront (prices vary depending on program and length!), you won’t have to worry about housing, meals, in-country transportation, or pre-planned excursions for the duration of your trip.
Depending on your nationality, there could be an additional fee with the tourist visa application. Make sure to check online, and apply for the visa early enough to avoid rush fees or other last minute costs. And consider creating a FundMyTravel account to help raise money for your trip!
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop
India is huge, and with the low cost of living you could visit many different areas during your adventure. While safety is always a concern when traveling abroad (especially for women in India), you will find that by simply staying cautious and being smart with your decisions you can enjoy exploring all that surrounds you. Also keep in mind that locals are extremely welcoming and are always willing to offer suggestions or go out of their way to help you.
The pace of life in India may be much slower than what you are used to in your home country. This can be frustrating if you enjoy a sense of urgency or if you like your coffee shops open at 7:00 a.m. (try 9:00 a.m. instead). Instead of looking at your watch, wondering when you will arrive, take the time to enjoy a tea break during the six hour bus ride. Adventure travel programs in India offer a beautiful opportunity to let go of rigid schedules and simply live life day-by-day (no wonder yoga originated here!).

Awesome volunteer program in Victoria Falls
June 30, 2022by: Cecilia Hugo - United StatesProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I volunteered at Nakavango in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, as part of the IVHQ Wildlife Conservation Project. It truly was one of the highlights of my life. And I’ve had some pretty remarkable experiences so that says a lot. The staff a Nakavango was incredible and extremely knowledgeable. They create the perfect balance of hard work and joyous moments playing with the children at Masuwe School, observing wildlife in the bush, and taking in the sights of one of the seven wonders of the world. We each had our own room, were provided three yummy meals a day with great care to accommodate those who have special diets. Highlights of my stay included morning and evening game drives, sitting around the fire pit under the stars, camping out in the bush, and completing a work task feeling that we had made progress on a project. Yet, the most outstanding aspect of this experience for me, was bonding with my fellow volunteers. Prior to arriving at Nakavango, I thought I’d be the senior member of the crew so I was a bit apprehensive even though I had worked for weeks to get in shape physically so I could contribute equally. Well, I wasn’t the most senior. In fact, we had a wonderful range of ages, nationalities, and personalities. We became a family, caring for and respectful of all. That truly blew me away. And now, we continue to stay in touch. I am so grateful for the IVHQ program at Nakavango. It changed my life!

Bali- Ubud
July 24, 2018by: Amy Reilly - United KingdomProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I volunteered in Bali- Ubud, through IVHQ. Bali was an incredible experience. I made life long friends, taught a class of 6th graders, and got to experience a beautiful new culture. The staff were amazing, and helped out all the volunteers with whatever needs they had. The location was beautiful, we were situated in a village 20 minutes outside the town of Ubud. This allowed us to integrate in a real Balinese community. The people (the volunteers, locals & staff) were second to none. I volunteered for five weeks- by the end of those 5 weeks I was wishing I had 5 more! The only downside to this programme is missing the children you taught and the friends you made after you leave! A member of the IVHQ team was on hand from the minute I booked the trip. She answered any questions I had, and checked in with m to make sure everything was going well during the volunteer programme. Volunteering with IVHQ in Bali was absolutely the best thing I ever done. I thoroughly recommend anyone interested in volunteering abroad to consider IVHQ Bali. You wont regret it.
Amazing experience!
June 18, 2018by: DeannaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
This was the best experience of my life! I have always wanted to travel and volunteer abroad and IVHQ made this so fun and easy. During the week we were able to volunteer and take in the experiences we wanted while leaving plenty of time to explore the country for the weekend. Highly highly recommend this organization if you want a new way to travel and give back.
Hi Deanna. Thanks for such an awesome review! It's fantastic to hear our program offered you one of the best experiences in your life and that we made the process of volunteering easy and fun for you. Thanks for being a great volunteer and please join us on another program soon. ^Claire - IVHQ South Africa Program Manager
Magic!
April 27, 2018by: Florence Carrier - CanadaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I went to Cusco in June-July, for 5 weeks! I volunteered 3 weeks in a school with kids and 2 weeks in the zoo of the University. Both of programs was so much fun ! Just a little warning : don't accept the food at the school , the kid and the teacher can put some pression but it's important to say NO! I said yes and i've made an indigestion 2 hours after, for 5 days... nice ! Additionally, the staff is really amazing and always there if you need help! My host-family was really cool and we were 13 volunteers in the same house , so its easy to make activity with them during the evening! In perou, I've discover some wonderful people, amazing places, good food and a different culture! My best memories was to visit Plaza del Armas, the Macchu Picchu, rainbow mountain, moray, salt mines and the lake Titicaca during the weekend. The organisation American Inca Trail is a great staff to organize your tour! Finally, Just do it !
Hi Florence, It's nice to hear from you! It sounds like you had a wonderful experience across your projects and exploring the wonders of Peru. Thanks for your feedback and for being a wonderful volunteer. We hope you'll join us again in the future. ^Andrea - IVHQ Peru - Cusco Program Manager
Physical therapy in Peru
August 20, 2017by: AMC - United StatesProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
I was able to volunteer at a special needs orphanage in Lima, Peru. I helped the Physical Therapist do range-of-motion with the children. It was wonderful to get the kids out of their wheelchairs and help them loosen up and relax. The best was seeing smiles on their faces from just having more stimulation. I traveled on the weekends with the other volunteers. Such an awesome experience making memories with new friends. We went sand boarding in Huacachina, hiking in Huaraz, and exploring in Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Madagascar experience
July 14, 2017by: Nathan Dunn - CanadaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
My time in Madagascar was amazing! Could not have asked for a better 3 months. All the staff are all open and welcoming and the people are just the coolest! Im glad i did the 3 months because i cant imagine doing anything shorter. The huts on camp are really nice along with the living area and the beach right below. But yea either way would highly recommend!
Hi Nathan, We are stoked to hear that you had an amazing 3 months in Madagascar! Thanks for sharing and for recommending IVHQ.<br/>Claire - IVHQ Madagascar Program Manager
India road trip
May 11, 2017by: SoniaProgram: Road Trip in India | GoEco - Top Volunteer Organization
Overall I'd recommend this experience! GoEco did a great job supporting the whole process before during and after the trip. I have always felt safe during the 4 weeks and had the opportunity to visit amazing places and get a glance on how geographical and cultural diverse but yet cohesively beautiful India is. On the down side, the volunteering program is taken a bit light, which might suite very young people looking for adventure but lacks in some aspects for more mature travelers that wish to discover India in meaningful way! Namaste!
Best semester ever!!
January 18, 2017by: Piper - United StatesI was looking for a trip that was going to be educational and authentic and fun. Without a doubt, I found it! Nepal and Tibet are truly incredible places, and coming home, I feel like I really got to connect with each of them and live like a Nepali. There were so many nights that I spent talking/singing/dancing with the locals, and I felt so lucky every day, and so grateful for every experience, be it trekking, rafting, getting lost in the cities, paragliding, yoga, or mountain biking, and for every other wonderful moment. The Pacific Discovery staff was awesome, teaching us everything from the very basics of travel to the pressing social and political issues in Nepal. Our leaders trusted us and supported us completely, and they were my friends above all. I would do this trip a thousand times over, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone. Overall, the best decision I've ever made!
I wish I could go back!
December 17, 2016by: Sophie TorresTraveling to Nepal and Tibet with Pacific Discovery was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Each day was a new adventure, whether we were trekking the Annapurna circuit, or helping a Nepali village build a pig pen. Even though the views were breathtaking it was the people that made an impression on me the most. Our guides, and the families we met were the most generous people I have ever met in my life, and I was so sad to leave them. PD gave me a real and authentic experience and I couldn't have asked for a better trip. The leaders were always there to help and I look up to them in so many ways. I wish I could relive it again and again.
Best time of my life
October 31, 2016by: Leon Packheiser - GermanyProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
Even if I dont speak their language the time I spent with the kids in Rio de janeiro was amazing. The smiles on their faces showed how much they apreciated what we did. I truly enjoyed the time playing soccer/football with them. Before I volunteered in Brazil I went to Colombia (Cartagena and Bogota) with IVHQ. I wanted to help these kids, but I didnt expect that they have an impact on me. I learned that there is always a reason to be happy no matter how hard life is. This time gave me so much that I took the chance to volunteer with IVHQ for the third time. If you are open minded, volunteering is the best way to travel. Living in the volunteer house felt like beeing part of a family. The work with the kids gives more experiences about culture and life than sightseeing can ever give. Brazil and also Colombia were amazing. Thank you IVHQ, I had the time of my life!
Hi Leon, What a wonderful review! Smiles are universal and we are thrilled to hear that you had an amazing time connecting with the children at your placements in Colombia and Brazil. Thanks for being an awesome volunteer and we would love to have you join us again in the future.
Everything I could have dreamed of and more!
December 30, 2014by: happyreyndon - Kansas CityThis program had been my dream for over two years. Finally as a junior in University I was able to make this amazing experience a reality. The friends and memories made in the 9 weeks is not comparable to anything else I have ever experienced. Prior to the trip I was still unsure where my education was leading me. After seeing a part of the world in such a unique way through Pacific Discovery, I have clear career goals and all new aspirations for my future. Overall I would recommend this trip to anyone looking for an experience of a lifetime!
