Ladakh VIII: Mindful Travel & Sustainable Living

by: Vcil Travel School

A 14-day immersive learning program set between the Himalayas and Karakoram — one of the world's most culturally rich and ecologically fragile regions. You will live with a Ladakhi host family in a traditional village, work alongside them, share meals, and learn about indigenous agriculture, natural building, and sustainable living — not as a tourist, but as a temporary community member. Three days are spent at SECMOL, the alternative school that inspired the film 3 Idiots. Run entirely by its own students on solar power, SECMOL only accepts students who "failed" the state exam — and transforms them. Co-organized with Local Futures (Helena Norberg-Hodge, Ancient Futures) and partnering with LAMO and SECMOL on the ground. Includes accommodation, 3 meals/day, transport, permits, travel insurance, guides, and workshops. Excludes flights and India visa. Financial support available. Suitable for gap year students, educators, and conscious travelers. Note: Leh sits at 3,500m — participants should be in good health. Full program (14 days, Aug 10–23): $1,100. Short program (8 days, Aug 10–17): $756.

Program Highlights

Live 3 days at SECMOL — the net-zero school that inspired 3 Idiots, run entirely by students who "failed" their exams. You live alongside them, not observe them.

Spend 4 days with a Ladakhi host family — working, eating, and learning in a traditional village. Real community immersion, not a curated cultural experience.

Co-organized with Local Futures and Helena Norberg-Hodge, author of Ancient Futures (40+ languages). Access communities and thinkers most travelers never reach.

$1,100 all-inclusive for 14 days: accommodation, 3 meals/day, transport, permits, insurance, guides, and workshops. Financial support available for those who need it.

Meet the people building Ladakh's future: natural builders, alternative educators, renewable energy pioneers, and community organizers. Leave with more than memories — leave with ideas.
