A Guide to Adventure Travel Abroad in Iceland
Locations
Sitting between the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans off the east coast of the European mainland, Iceland is the world’s 18th largest island, and with just over 300,000 citizens, it also one of the world’s least densely populated countries. Iceland’s interior highlands are largely uninhabitable, with the bulk of the population living instead in small towns and settlements dotting the country’s extensive coastline.
Reykjavik, the country’s capital and largest city, is typically the most populated destination where you will visit while you adventure travel in Iceland. With around 130,000 people, Reykjavik is the undisputed economic, political, and cultural heart of the tiny island nation. Other locations you might visit while you adventure travel in Iceland include the much smaller towns of Hafnarfjorour, Akureyri, and Isafjordur, in addition to the trips you may take to soak in the country’s unsettled areas.
As you might have already guessed by virtue of its name and geography, Iceland can get pretty cold. Although the climate is temperate, it’s peak average generally sits around 50°F in the summer months, when most adventure travel programs in Iceland take course. Pack warmly and plan for a brisk journey abroad!
Adventure Travel in Iceland
Adventure travel is perhaps the most popular means of travel in Iceland, and for good reason. The country’s dramatic landscapes and sparse population make it a dream destination for outdoor-oriented individuals who want to experience a side of nature they’ve never seen before. From backpacking and spelunking on land to kayaking and fishing at sea, there are tons of exciting outings you will embark on while you adventure travel in Iceland.
For environmental enthusiasts, it will also please you to know that Iceland is one of the most sustainable countries on the planet. It runs mostly on renewable energy, and has in place some of the most progressive climate legislation in the international community. Eco tours in Iceland will enable you to have a ton of fun engaging in adrenaline-seeking activities, while also keeping pace through volunteering, geology, and environmental studies.
Adventure travel programs in Iceland typically run anywhere from just a couple of weeks to a few months long, with the opportunity to choose from a flexible set of dates. Each program will have a unique itinerary featuring different activities for adventure travel in Iceland, so research widely to find one that feels like the perfect fit for you!
Costs & Affordability
Like other Nordic countries, Iceland is an expensive place to travel. On top of this, adventure travel program fees can cost a pretty penny as well, covering most on-the-ground costs including food, housing, and transportation. If you have your heart set on adventure travel in Iceland but feel it may cost too much, fundraising is always a great idea to help cover your bases. The local currency in Iceland is the Icelandic krona, which exchanges at about 120 ISK to $1 USD.
Accommodation & Visas
Because you will likely move around a lot, you will enjoy a variety of different accommodations while adventure traveling in Iceland. Within the towns and cities you will likely stay at hostels or hotels, while adventuring through the countryside you may do more camping or stay in more remote inns. Be sure to check out multiple itineraries in detail to compare what kind of housing if offered along the way!
Iceland is part of the Schengen agreement, which means that European Union citizens will not have to apply for a visa in order to adventure travel in Iceland, and citizens of many other countries are allowed to travel for up to 90 days before obtaining documentation. To learn more about Iceland’s visa policy toward your home nation, be sure to check out our Iceland Embassy Directory.
Benefits & Challenges
Remoteness. Located nearly 300 miles away from the nearest body of land in Europe, Iceland has a sense of remoteness about it which is perfect for an adventure travel getaway. Get ready to explore off the map!
Landscape. From volcanoes and glaciers to fjords and beaches, Iceland boasts an incredible amount of unique geographical diversity. It can feel like a whole different planet at times.
Sustainability. Perhaps most impressive of all is Iceland’s commitment to preserve and care for the health of its environment. The small northern island nation is truly a role model for the international community.
Embarking on an adventure travel program in Iceland is the opportunity to get away from the doldrums of home and experience some entirely new excitement. Are you ready for a great journey ahead?

I truly went inside Iceland, I did not just do the superficial or touristy stuff, I felt that I truly went inside and deep into Iceland. I went from the most common city, to some truly unique places. I truly lived Iceland.

This trip was amazing for many reasons, though I think the best part about it was that I didn’t feel like anything was left out. I feel as though every day was full of things today and there was rarely any time when I was bored or dissatisfied!

My trip to Iceland was the first time being away from home for that amount of time, and was definitely way out of my comfort zone. Meeting the counselors and other teens was really easy to do and didn’t feel forced or awkward. As for the activities, everything was really fun to do and despite some of them being out of my comfort zone as well, such as horseback riding and glacier hiking.
A fun summer

I had the most amazing experience on my trip with TFT. Any problems or issues we faced the team members from TFT fixed it right away. They were extremely flexible, listened and extremely funny. This experience made me realize how much I truly love travel! I loved all the different excursions and experiences that TFT offered!
Best experience
February 10, 2023by: Maddie Hagger - United StatesI went on the “Europe for Older Teens: Iceland Adventure”. This was my second trip with TFT and I am so glad that I picked this one. Iceland has always been on my bucket list (of course the blue lagoon more specifically). But I never thought I could get so much out of a trip. I was able to learn so much about Iceland that I never knew about and I don’t think I ever would have known. What I liked so much about this trip is that I didn’t feel like just a tourist going around and looking at cool places and exhibits but I was able to actually experience it. I was able to experience the main town of Reykjavik but also the small little towns that I think get forgotten about a lot of the time, most times these are the cutest. This was the summer before I left for college and while I have been on a TFT trip before I still get very nervous with new people, but just like before I was worrying about nothing. I had four amazing counselors that always made sure we had everything we needed and were always there for me to talk, they never made me feel like I didn’t matter and it made me trust them so much more and made me see them not only as people to tell me rules but as my friends and people I could count on. Of course the teens were amazing and again I had nothing to worry about, I made amazing friends most I still keep in contact with today and this made the trip so much more fun because not only was I experiencing amazing sites but I was doing it with amazing people beside me. I absolutely loved this trip and cannot recommend it enough. You are able to see so many different parts of Iceland and also be able to learn lessons and have experiences that you will never forget (I certainly didn’t).
Best experience of my life.
November 11, 2022by: Kenzie Romaniuk - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Iceland Adventure
My name is Kenzie and I went on the Iceland Photography Trip in 2022. It's safe to say that it was one of the best experiences of my life. The big thing that impacted my trip was the two adults Simon and Tilda because they taught me so many things about photography and their humor and jokes and way of running the trip made it so special. I also met some lifelong friends on the trip. I am not a very extroverted person but by day 3 of the trip, we were all like a family. We shared so many amazing experiences and some tough ones on the trip that really bonded us. The itinerary for the trip was phenomenal. There was not a day that I didn't enjoy or that I was bored. We went to so many spectacular places that immersed us in Icelandic culture and made us appreciate the beauty of our Earth. Overall the Icelandic Photography Trip changed my life for the better and I met some of the most amazing people and saw the most breathtaking places!
Iceland trip
April 14, 2022by: Berlin Nelson - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Iceland Adventure
I loved my trip to Iceland with TFT. It’s an intensely beautiful country and it was great to travel by bus. I could watch mountains, shoreline, and mossy lava fields go by out the window while hanging out with my friends and queuing up music for the speaker. Plus everyone loved our bus driver. I thought the trip was organized with a nice balance of planned activities, like the glacier hike or horseback riding, and free time where my friends and I could wander around a town, watch the sunset from a hill, or lose to some Icelandic school kids in basketball. My counselors were great, the kind of people you could trust to lead the trip but could also paint their nails or challenge to arm wrestling. It was an adventure and I feel lucky to have gone.
Coolest trip ever
November 05, 2021by: Theodore Dematatis - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Iceland Adventure
The Travel for Teen’s Iceland Trip was truly one of the coolest experiences of my whole life. The schedule of activities are thoroughly planned out and really gave me the true Icelandic experience. From swimming in the blue lagoon, to hiking Europe’s biggest glacier (Vatnajokull), to riding native Icelandic horses through the countryside, I really do think I did everything Iceland had to offer. Along with a wonderful itinerary, the counselors were awesome and were very good at supporting my fellow campers and I throughout the trip. I strongly suggest TFT to any teen who craves adventure and a different perspective of the world because that is exactly what they provide you with.
Iceland is cool!!!
November 24, 2018by: Lindsay P - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Iceland Adventure
I was lucky enough to travel to Iceland with TFT the first summer they ran the program (summer 2017), and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Traveling the ring road of Iceland proved to be the best way to see all of Iceland and what it has to offer. Though I was unable to pronounce half of the places we visited, it was extremely special to travel to small towns like Seydisfjordur and Stykkisholmur that most tourists to Iceland don’t get to see. Iceland is a truly unique and special country, and this trip provided me with the opportunity to see all of the famous, breathtaking waterfalls, while also allowing me to kayak in the fjords, from a town of less than 500 people. Whether it was hiking on glaciers or swimming in between continental plates in the Silfra fissure, this trip never failed to amaze me.
Iceland adventure
October 16, 2018by: Colleen Mulligan - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Iceland Adventure
Iceland is such a beautiful country, it was almost like another world. This trip was action packed and we got to see a lot of what this gorgeous country has to offer. We got to drive around the entire ring road, which not even a lot of locals have done. It was always exciting to see the changing scenery day after day. From its spectacular waterfalls, to its glistening glaciers and toasty hot springs, Iceland has something for everyone! I enjoyed every day while on the trip and every activity we did was exhilarating. Iceland is defiantly a one of a kind country and I recommend everyone to visit it at least once in their life!
An adventure of a lifetime
October 14, 2018by: kendra brooks - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Iceland Adventure
I went to Iceland in the summer on 2017 and had an amazing experience!! From visiting beautiful waterfalls to playing soccer with locals, the trip was action packed. A few of my favorite memories are horseback riding under the midnight sun and snorkeling between the tectonic plates. The fourth of July happened to fall while we were abroad and our group celebrated by going to a nearby waterfall, eating cake and playing frisbee. Everyone on the trip became super close, which made the vibe even better!! My counselors were great and always looking out for our best interest. I highly recommend this trip if you're looking to see some extraordinary views and immerse yourself in a new culture.
Amazing experience!!
October 08, 2018by: Riley Heitmann - United StatesProgram: Travel For Teens: Iceland Adventure
This was my first time traveling abroad alone without my family. I have always wanted to travel to Iceland. Travel for Teens had a great itinerary and covered all of the most iconic destinations and waterfalls that Iceland has to offer. Along with traveling to all of the best locations they included a variety of super fun activities that I wouldn’t have found out about by myself. Before the trip I was worried about meeting new people and how the counselors would handle the teens and the trip as a whole. The counselors exceeded my expectations they made everything fun and made sure nobody was left out. They always made sure everyone and everything was accounted for. On travel days everything went smoothly, even though one of the teens suitcase was left by the airline in the USA the counselors talked to the airline and made sure he got his bag the next day. They handled everything so well. It was amazing to be able to meet teens from all around the world and to be able to experience a new country with them. It is a trip I will never forget and I am so excited to go on another trip next summer!
