Teaching Volunteering in Kerala, India

Join the Teaching program in Kerala with International Volunteer HQ and support primary school education in the coastal city of Kochi. Volunteers step into classrooms working with children aged roughly 6 to 12 years old. Many classrooms experience teacher shortages or heavy workloads, which leaves students without consistent instruction. As a volunteer, you can contribute by helping lead lessons in English, math, or science, running small group or one-on-one support, helping with homework, and offering extra practice or creative learning activities. You do not need formal teaching credentials — a good command of English and enthusiasm are enough. Local staff and coordinators help guide you, suggest lesson topics, and support you if it’s your first time teaching. The work can be highly rewarding as you help young students build confidence, improve foundational skills, and gain access to better education opportunities. Outside placement hours, you’ll have time to explore Kerala’s backwaters, beaches, spice-market towns, and rich cultural heritage while making a meaningful contribution to education in the community."

Empower, educate, and uplift — join our Women Empowerment Volunteer Program in India and be part of a powerful movement helping women gain confidence, skills, and independence. Through this meaningful volunteer experience with Volunteering Journeys, you’ll work closely with women and girls from underprivileged backgrounds to promote gender equality, education, and self-sufficiency. India is a country of incredible diversity and deep traditions, but many women, especially in rural and low-income urban areas, still face barriers to education, employment, and leadership opportunities. As a women empowerment volunteer in India, you’ll play an important role in helping local women build brighter, independent futures for themselves and their families. By volunteering with Volunteering Journeys, you’ll join initiatives that address these inequalities directly — helping local NGOs and women’s groups create safe spaces where women can learn, grow, and lead. These programs focus on practical skills training, language development, income-generation workshops, and confidence-building activities that empower women to become change-makers in their own communities.

The Banyan Impact Fellowship (formerly AIF William J. Clinton Fellowship) is a fully funded 10-months program in India. By facilitating exchange and collaboration between young professionals from India and the U.S., the program aims to shape the next generation of leaders committed to positive and sustainable change and creating a lasting US-India relationship. Fellows serve with civil society organizations in various thematic areas including environment protection, climate justice, public health, education, livelihoods, arts, culture, and more. Fellows receive a stipend, health insurance, language training, mentoring, professional development, international networking and career opportunities. Fellows benefit from in person conferences, and they engage in workshops, reflection exercises, and skill building activities. Apply by February 20, 2024.

Volunteers on this program will be involved in planning and running various sports lessons and games including football, cricket, athletics, basketball and netball with children from 4 to 14 years. The project is in a local school where you will also at times be assisting local teachers and GVI staff to organise sports events and help run various outdoor activities. Sports is a vital tool that will motivate the students outside of the classroom setting and give children the opportunity to develop various skills and their confidence in general. In your free time you will get a chance to explore the culture of Kerala by taking cooking or yoga lessons, visiting the local sights in Kochi, the enchanting backwaters or the tea and spice plantations in the hill station of Munnar.
