Join the Teaching program in Kerala with International Volunteer HQ and support primary school education in the coastal city of Kochi. Volunteers step into classrooms working with children aged roughly 6 to 12 years old. Many classrooms experience teacher shortages or heavy workloads, which leaves students without consistent instruction. As a volunteer, you can contribute by helping lead lessons in English, math, or science, running small group or one-on-one support, helping with homework, and offering extra practice or creative learning activities. You do not need formal teaching credentials — a good command of English and enthusiasm are enough. Local staff and coordinators help guide you, suggest lesson topics, and support you if it’s your first time teaching. The work can be highly rewarding as you help young students build confidence, improve foundational skills, and gain access to better education opportunities. Outside placement hours, you’ll have time to explore Kerala’s backwaters, beaches, spice-market towns, and rich cultural heritage while making a meaningful contribution to education in the community."

The guidance and preparation resources made me feel confident to give it a go. I had no concerns or worries as a result. IVHQ is a wholly trustworthy organisation which wants all volunteers to have a great experience. The programs represent great value for money. You will meet many other volunteers who hold similar values to you. There will be plenty of interesting discussions round the dinner table! In a sense, you will feel part of a family.

The resources met my expectation while enhancing a smooth transition with the local organisation I was affiliated to. The local team was remarkable in many aspects. Their respective projects were well run, streamlined and very well managed. My teaching coordinator was caring, professional and incredibly helpful and supportive. I had a positive feedback from the students and I do believe they truly enjoyed our mutual collaboration during the program. Getting out of your comfort zone is the first step towards your inner transformation. The connection you will build over your experience with locals as well as with other volunteers will unfold a wealth of opportunities in your life.

It was a great house which was in a good location, safe and the staff were extremely helpful. The rooms were clean and spacious. The food was prepared by the fantastic cooks who were really nice and always made high quality, nutritious meals. If someone was still hesitant about volunteering abroad, I would recommend trying it at least once and make sure it is with a reputable company like IVHQ who ensures a safe experience with great staff.

Their gratitude displayed for my efforts was beyond comprehension

Scotia was extremely responsive. The program guidance / setup was extremely descriptive and helpful in preparing me for my trip. The local team was extremely helpful when I reached out. I enjoyed the food at the volunteer house thoroughly. The children that constantly drew and wrote thank you notes to me (I have a whole book of both English words and art by them with me at home now!) was my favorite. I was truly moved by both the children and adults that I taught. Also, watching the development of the adults from the first day until the last day that I taught was so rewarding. The way everyone was so grateful to me truly moved me beyond my own comprehension. Their gratitude displayed for my efforts was beyond comprehension. I did not expect to have such a profound impact in such a short timeframe. I worked hard to make an impact in my short time and by the way everyone responded I believe my energy was matched in every sense of the experience!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Teaching in Kerala programme involve?

You help teach at elementary schools around Kochi (Fort Kochi area), mainly teaching English and sometimes helping with other subjects. Because teacher numbers are low, volunteers often lead small class groups, help with lesson planning and give children extra learning support.

Who can volunteer for this programme and what are the requirements?

You must be at least 18 years old. You need to speak English. Volunteers are accommodated in a volunteer house. While no formal teaching certificate is required, prior teaching or a TEFL qualification is recommended.

When can I start and how long can I volunteer?

The programme starts every Monday. You can volunteer for between 1 and 8 weeks. Volunteer work is up to 5 hours per day.

What kind of impact could I make as a volunteer teacher?

Because many classes have free periods due to teacher shortages, your support helps ensure children don’t miss out on learning. By teaching English and supporting other subjects, you help improve students’ educational opportunities and give them access to skills that could help their future.

What accommodation and support are provided for volunteers?

Volunteers stay in a volunteer house with shared rooms. The programme includes meals, orientation on arrival, airport pickup (if arriving before start) and local in-country support during your stay.
