Volunteer in Childcare Work in India

IVHQ has opportunities to work in childcare centers in and around Delhi, as well as in kindergartens in Kerala, helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds to learn and play. Day care centers in India are often extremely full with children due to a lack of appropriate facilities. These day care centers (who care for children from very poor families whose parents have to work during the day) face many problems such as a lack of funding, lack of resources and lack of help. Volunteers who work in childcare focus on helping with English, homework and general games. Volunteers also assist children with other aspects of their education, through taking extracurricular lessons and helping with general education on life skills such as personal hygiene.

Women's Empowerment Project in India

In Kerala, a coastal strip along the Arabian Sea, address economic and gender disparities in the country through community development projects. Support workshops to encourage men and boys to talk about gender issues, assist with the improvement of girls literacy skills, contribute to the English language skills of local youth and women, and support children and adults in self-care Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) routines. GVI measures all impact against the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), and has strict child protection policies in place to ensure ethical best practices. This is an opportunity to be immersed in a different environment, and form life-long friendships with other participants from around the world. In your free time, take a boat cruise along Kerala’s beautifully scenic backwaters, made up of a network of rivers and lagoons. With palm-lined jungle greenery and an ever-changing horizon, it’s a peaceful and beautiful sight to behold.

Program: Banyan Impact Fellowship for Service in India

Through this fellowship, I've been able to work on UNICEF and UNESCO environmental education training and capacity-building projects. While the project placements vary, my experience has been one that could not have happened any other way, as an American citizen figuring out how to work and live in India. The entire AIF team is so supportive, and while I would say the experience of living and working in India is not for the faint of heart, this is the best way I can find for anyone to do that, and to come away with incredible professional growth and experience to show for it. I highly recommend this program to anyone who is interested in the development sector but only those who are ready for a challenge.
