A Guide to TEFL Courses in Russia
Locations
Russia is the world’s largest country by a significant margin, spanning all the way from Europe in the west across the Asian continent to the Pacific Ocean in the east. There are roughly 150 million people living across this landscape, and several major cities stand out as popular choices where to enroll in a TEFL program in Russia.
The big two are Moscow and St. Petersburg. With roughly 16 million people living in the metropolitan area, Moscow is Russia’s capital and also one of the largest and most influential cities in the world. Meanwhile St. Petersburg, which was formerly seat to the Russian throne and is often stylized as the country’s most “European” city, is an equally popular a destination where to enroll in a TEFL program in Russia.
Other potential destinations where you can pursue a TEFL course in Russia include the smaller cities of Vladivostok, Kaliningrad, and Sochi. As a general rule of thumb, the further you travel into the country’s interior, the less commonly you will encounter English speakers. This can be an intimidating prospect, but as an international educator, it also presents an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the Russian culture and language!
Courses & Programs
Most TEFL programs in Russia are on par with international standards in the field, which require at least 120 hours of classroom time in order to become certified to teach English abroad. This generally corresponds to a one-month TEFL course in Russia, during which you will cover many different topics in the field ranging from the basics of grammar, reading, and writing, to more advanced strategies in teaching methods, classroom management, and student assessment.
Not all TEFL programs in Russia are the same; some will offer a bare-bones course structure, while others will provide you with additional perks such as first hand teaching experience in front of a classroom and lifelong job placement assistance after graduation. Once you obtain your TEFL certificate in Russia, you will have the opportunity either to stay in the country and find a teaching job there, or else seek out a placement in any other country across the world.
It is not required that you speak Russian in order to enroll in a TEFL program in Russia, or to teach English there afterward for that matter. However if you make a genuine effort to learn the local language, you will find that communication with your pupils becomes infinitely easier. It can’t hurt your social life outside of the classroom, either!
Costs & Affordability
TEFL programs in Russia range in affordability, though most often you can expect to pay in the realm of $1,500 to $2,000 in basic course fees. This tuition cost for an in-classroom TEFL training is pretty much standard around the world, but obviously different countries will range in affordability of other living costs. Russia as a whole is less expensive than most other industrialized nations, so it can be a good opportunity to save some money, depending on where in the country you choose to live.
Accommodation & Visas
During the duration of a one-month TEFL course in Russia, you will usually be given the options of living in a homestay or otherwise group living situation with fellow international educators. If you choose to stay on and teach English in the country after your TEFL program in Russia is complete, then many teachers will choose to move into their own apartments (typically with roommates at first to save money).
Russia’s visa policy will vary depending on factors such as your home nation and the duration of your intended stay, but most international educators should expect to obtain documentation upfront with the endorsement of their TEFL program in Russia.
Benefits & Challenges
Behind the Curtain. The former Soviet Union existed behind a so-called “Iron Curtain,” which skewed any information to Westerners about what everyday life is actually like in Russia. It is an incredible country with a rich history and culture; come see for yourself.
Language Exchange. Enrolling in a TEFL program in Russia and then moving on to teach English in the country is an invaluable opportunity not only to develop your own English-teaching skills, but also to learn the Russian language while there.
Culture Abound. Though often categorized as a European country, Russia maintains a very distinct culture from the West, especially the further you move into its Central Asian and Eastern provinces. There is a huge internal diversity within the country, which merits as much exploration as possible during your stay!
Enrolling in a TEFL course in Russia is just the first step in what can turn into a grand global adventure teaching English around the world. Here you will come to discover an often misunderstood nation with an exceedingly complex and fascinating history and culture; not a bad place to begin!

Positive TEFL Experience and Path to Teaching English Abroad
April 22, 2026by: Sean ObrienHi, my name is saba and I am from Pakistan. I completed my masters in English literature back home, and when I moved to Ireland I was away from my subject for about two years. Later on, I began feeling interested in teaching English again, and that is when I came across this wonderful academy (tefl) online. They explained everything properly, so getting admission was pretty easy for me, and up to now I have received 2 certificates. I truly value their service, the course content, the way they deliver it, and how supportive they are, and I really hope it helps me achieve my dream of becoming a teacher. I would definitely suggest this academy to all my near and dear ones, especially anyone who wants to teach English abroad or even at home. I am very satisfied with their service. Great work, TEFL!
Well-Structured Modules with Strong Support System
April 22, 2026by: Daniel CollinsI had a great time working through the 10 modules, which covered everything from theory, vocab and grammar to practical examples and useful classroom tips, plus links and a multiple choice quiz. On top of that, the team were also straightforward to contact by both email and phone.
Disappointing Experience and Lack of Support
April 19, 2026by: Cian DoyleLast year I signed up for a course thinking I could chip away at it over the summer and in between breaks, since I am already in a full time uni course and knew I could not properly commit to TEFL material yet. When I started struggling to keep up with my own uni work, I eventually made the decision that I wanted to withdraw from TEFL, but it got me nowhere even after I explained my whole situation. With things changed for me now, I honestly do not know if I will even finish the course, so I just feel really let down and like I have been taken for a ride after spending that much money for nothing, and not feeling understood at all.
Engaging and Insightful TEFL Teaching Practice Course
April 18, 2026by: Niamh ByrneI just finished the 10 hour TEFL course with teaching practice included, and I am genuinely happy with how much I learned and all the materials I received. I am coming away feeling a lot more confident in my own ability to teach, and I am really excited to begin. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to pick up creative, engaging ways to run a class.
Straightforward, Flexible, and Supportive TEFL Course Experience
April 15, 2026by: Molly DalyI have just finished the 120 hour TEFL teaching course. The app was really straightforward to use, and I thought the online lessons were both thorough and engaging. It also gives you a clear picture of what teaching english involves across all levels. Being able to work through everything at your own speed was a big plus. I did need an extension to complete it, and Emma was extremely helpful with that. It was also reassuring to know the TEFL team are always there if you have any questions. All in all, I was extremely happy with the experience and I would highly recommend the course.
Positive, Well-Structured, and Supportive TEFL Learning Experience
April 09, 2026by: Sarah KeaneChoosing to do TEFL is something I am really happy I did. I feel like I have taken in so much already, and I am excited to sign up for more courses soon. Everything is laid out clearly and thoughtfully, so it feels organised, full of useful information, and enjoyable at the same time. The TEFL team have also been great whenever I have needed help, and it makes the process far less daunting knowing there is a kind group of people there to support you.
Engaging and Confidence-Building TEFL Teaching Practice Course
April 09, 2026by: Cian MooreAdding the 10 hour English teaching course alongside my 168 hour TEFL certificate turned out to be such a worthwhile step. Our tutor, Kate Popova, ran the sessions in a way that was lively, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable. It is obvious how strong her experience is, especially in how effortlessly she kept everyone involved throughout. As we worked through the curriculum, Kate was also really adaptable and always happy to pause and clear up any questions that came up. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone because it gives you a real taste of what it feels like to actually deliver an English lesson. You get to take all the theory you have learned and apply it properly, while also building the confidence you need to start your English teaching career. On top of that, I really enjoyed meeting other students from all over the world who are on the same path. Best of luck with your TEFL journey!
Clear and Well-Structured TEFL Course with Room for More Multimedia
April 01, 2026by: Adam WalshI have just finished the 120hr advanced TEFL course online. Navigating the website was straightforward and the course layout made sense right away. I did wish the material included more videos and pictures because it started to feel a bit repetitive after some time, but the content itself was clearly written and everything I read seemed accurate. Now I am heading off to complete the final 2 bonus courses!
Clear, Flexible, and User-Friendly TEFL Course Experience
April 01, 2026by: Sean RyanI have just finished the 120 premier TEFL course, and I really enjoyed it for a number of reasons. Everything was set out clearly and professionally, with the modules and their sections always visible. I also liked how flexible it was, as there was no pressure to complete it by a deadline. You could dip in and out whenever it suited you. Navigation was straightforward too because you could stop on a page, leave the site, and when you returned you would be taken straight back to where you had been, with no need to search around for your place. All in all, it gave me exactly what I was hoping for and more, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to teach English as a second language.
