Online: Anatomy, Behavior & Conservation of African Big Cats

This 8-week course covers topics relating to anatomy, physiology, husbandry, conservation, and medical management of the three African Big Cats: lions, leopards, and cheetahs—each with unique characteristics and needs. Students learn real-life skills such as recognizing parasites and identifying white blood cells. The pre-recorded lectures and assignments are self-guided and can be learned at your own pace. You are also expected to contribute an average of 3 times per week to message board discussions in the virtual classroom. While pre-recorded modules allow flexibility in your learning, the course also offers one-on-one mentorship with zoo and wildlife veterinarians. The tuition includes a transcript from Iowa Wesleyan University and three credits. Ideally, participants have completed at least a semester of college-level biology and have an understanding of basic scientific terms for any of our online veterinary courses.

Sky Island Borderlands Conservation Program

Operating from a mobile camp, students will spend most days hiking and conducting field research in the forests and ranges of the Madrean Sky Islands, which contain some of the most rugged and remote lands in the southwest. In addition to spending time at various field sites, students will have the opportunity to spend time with community members, researchers, and resource managers. This program provides an amazing opportunity to experience the vast landscapes and biodiversity of the southern border. More than 7,000 species of plants and animals–including over half of the birds in North America–can be found here. Students will have the chance to see or track wildlife such as puma, bobcats, pronghorn, gray foxes, coyotes, ocelots, black bears, white-nosed coati, rare birds, and maybe even document a jaguar. Our academics complement the field research and are designed to be interactive and hands-on. Students can expect to spend a few hours a day working on their field journals, reading and discussing relevant articles with the group, having lectures from program instructors, and working on assignments and essays.

Earth Expeditions (EE) Study Abroad Courses

Earth Expeditions (EE) are Miami University study abroad courses designed for people looking for inspiring professional development opportunities while earning graduate credit. All courses engage with grassroots conservation and sustainability programs making a difference in Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Our planned 2026 EE sites are the Amazon, Australia, Baja, Belize, Borneo, Brazil, Costa Rica, Galápagos, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Namibia, Paraguay, and Thailand. Awarding seven graduate credit hours (5 credits for the Summer Term + 2 credits for the Fall Semester), EE courses are hybrid and combine direct global study experiences with engagement in a web-based online learning community. Summer field courses typically run from mid-May through mid-August, with pre-course work beginning in April. The international field “in-country” portion of each class generally lasts 9-10 days. The 2-credit-hour follow-on fall semester course, “Inquiry & Action,” is entirely online and typically runs from late August to mid-December. This component is optional for students taking an EE course for stand-alone graduate credit outside the master’s program.

This trip was very educational about animal welfare and conervation. It was also fun getting to know my peers and staff. I enjoyed getting to come up with enrichment to better help the animals at the sanctuary!
