<h3>What inspired you to travel abroad?</h3>
<p>I had always known I wanted to study abroad since I entered high school. I'm Korean-American, but I didn't grow up with Korean culture as a part of my life, so I knew South Korea was where I wanted to go for my study abroad. I also love K-pop, Korean food, etc so I knew I would be able to find a lot of things to do in Korea.</p>

<h3>Why did you choose <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/the-education-abroad-network rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>The Education Abroad Network</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>Out of the universities in South Korea that my home university (Iowa State University) offered, going to Hanyang University seemed like the best fit for me. I'm a part of the business college and out of Hanyang University, Korea University, and Soonchunhyang University, getting classes for my major at Hanyang would be easiest in comparison to the other two. I also liked the location of my university and it was the least expensive out of the three for me.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about your host country/city?</h3>
<p>It's so hard to pick one thing that was my favorite because I truly loved everything about my time in Seoul. If I had to pick just three things I would say it would be safety, food, and things to do.</p>
<p>Seoul is very safe especially since it's a major city, and as a woman, I never experienced any times where I felt unsafe or nervous in my environment. The food is also phenomenal and there's a lot of variety to choose from; the cafe culture is also incredible and I highly recommend spending a day just going to different cafes. Lastly, Seoul has so much to do; you can go shopping, see museums, go to parks, and so much more. There are things I wanted to do that I couldn't find time for, so I don't think you'll ever be bored when you're there!</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>I think the people in my program helped brighten my experience abroad. I met an incredible group of girls while I was there and we all got along instantly. Spending time with them, getting to know them, and doing so many new things together was one thing that made my experience abroad that much better.</p>

<h3>How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff were incredible. I had the numbers of the local staff and whenever I had questions they would always answer within a day and were super helpful! If they didn't know right away they would make sure to get back to me and it helped ease some anxieties I had while I was there.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I wish I had planned better while I was there because there were some things I wanted to see or make sure I got back to. There were a lot of things I had wanted to do but it was all so overwhelming because I had to remember I was also there for school. Time management was something I struggled with and it was hard to find balance at times.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>I took four classes while abroad and I only had classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On days I had class I would usually be up around 8 am or 9 am and walk to a cafe on campus to get breakfast and then head to my class.</p>
<p>After my class, I'd usually meet up with friends and hang out with them; we might go shopping, go to a cafe or a restaurant, or stay on campus. The evenings were usually the time when I would do any studying I needed to do, but if I didn't have to do any studying one day, I'd be with friends getting dinner or walking around Hongdae or Myeongdong.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I loved walking around the busier areas like Hongdae or Myeongdong as well as going to cafes with my friends. No matter the time of day, Hongdae is always busy with people walking around and shopping.</p>
<p>We loved going into all the different stores to look around and going to cafes and photo booths as well. Because Seoul was always bustling with people, my friends and I liked to be out whenever we could even if it was just to walk around because most of us are from more rural parts of America so it was a nice change to be able to experience the busyness of Seoul!</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>I chose to live in the dorms on my campus because I didn't want to have to look into other living accommodations. It was easier to live in the dorm and I wanted to be with other people in my program. The dorms were nice and I liked that they had their bathroom in each room. I liked how the dorms were set up because they had a lot of cabinet space and shelving on the desk.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>I think every future participant should do a little bit of research about the country before going. I watched a lot of YouTube and TikTok videos of day in the life, or university day in the life, and cultural norms and social etiquette because I wanted to be sure I knew some of that type of stuff beforehand and not worry about it.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend your program/provider to others? Why?</h3>
<p>I would recommend my program to others because the staff was incredibly kind and helpful; they made sure to ease a lot of my concerns I might've had and we're nice to talk to as well. The university I went to (Hanyang University) was amazing, too. My professors were kind and helpful whenever I had questions and I enjoyed going to school there.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>You learn so much about yourself when you travel abroad. I am more confident in my abilities to figure things out myself and just be an adult because I had this semester abroad. There were some things I sort of had to figure out myself because my parents weren't there and they wouldn't have known the answers to my questions either. You also meet so many fantastic people when abroad and I know the people I met in Seoul are going to be my friends for a long time.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Part of the reason I studied abroad in Seoul was because I wanted to see if I could see myself living there, and within the first month there, I knew 100% that I wanted to come back to Seoul to live there. Seoul has a lot of career opportunities and industries that I'm interested in and I felt so comfortable at home in South Korea. I have a better grasp as to where I might end up after I graduate college and it's all because of the 4.5 months I spent in Seoul.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Meaningful travel to me means that you make the most out of your experience. No study abroad can be perfect; there were certainly times when I was stressed because I didn't know how something worked or I didn't know what to do. But that is just a part of the experience of going to a new country. You aren't going to know everything before you go and there are going to be things you have to learn as you spend time there, but I think it is those types of things that teach you the most important life lessons and things about yourself.</p>

<p class="p1">Growing up in a small town it can be hard not to feel the pull of wanting to expand your horizons. I knew after a long time fascinating myself with odd bits of information from the world beyond my borders that I would study abroad as soon as I could. I did not want to end up trapped in the tiny world I inhabited. I was then, and still am, painfully over enthusiastic about learning how other people live.</p><div class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://cdn2.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto-olmstead-1428401392.jpg" alt="

<h3>Why did you choose South Korea? What drew you to International Studies Abroad?</h3>
<p class="p1">One of the first people I met in college was from South Korea. Whenever someone, like her Mom, gave her a call she would instantly jump into a stream of fast-flying syllables and I'd be blown away. I thought it was interesting that someone could do something so natural and for me it would be so complex. I was curious enough to learn Hangul from her and amazingly it was pretty simple to grasp - seriously, try it yourself! I was encouraged by this small victory enough to consider South Korea as my first trip out of the country. Up to that point in time, I had thought Asian languages were impossible to even attempt to understand.</p>
<p class="p1">The way I chose ISA was actually simple: They offered a meal plan. As with every part of this decision to go to South Korea, the small inconsequential decisions made the most difference.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about South Korea?</h3>
<p class="p1">The landscape of Korea is beautiful. The way the sun claws the top of the mountains and shines down on this hyper-futuristic city is nothing short of sublime. The temples are adorned with dramatic and stylized paintings of waves crashing, dragons dancing, pearls emerging from the depths, giant fish surfacing, elegant cranes, etc. The city of Seoul itself exudes a warmth to foreigners, for example, the subway announces stops in three separate languages and on the whole many citizens are gratified that you find South Korea to be interesting. I have found that the smaller the country, often times the bigger the pride of the people! I suppose these are a few of my favorite things about Korea, but many of my favorite parts are hard to express. I felt on the whole that there was a great feeling of excitement and possibility here.</p>
<h3>What made your program stand out from other programs in South Korea?</h3>
<p class="p1">Our advisors were real people. They were honest about how they felt about things, and really that is something you need when you're in such a convoluted state of mind, like the one you find yourself in abroad. They represented ISA, but more importantly they represented themselves as individuals. When we were told things we had a great deal of point of view and could understand the "do's and dont's" of any situation much better.</p>
<p class="p1">Korea can be an insular country, even people your own age who are Korean may be intimidated by speaking to you, or may not want to put in the effort. Certainly there are a lot of Koreans who don't fit this measure, but at the very least we had our advisors as important points of insight into this place where we lived.</p>
<h3>Tell us more about the type of support the local ISA staff provided you with throughout your program.</h3>
<p class="p1">The staff of ISA supported us in any disputes we may have had in our classes, kept tabs on our health, and were looking for feedback a lot of the time. On the point of the classes the ISA staff were indispensable. Much of the time your expectations can be fuzzy in a Korean classroom. Even given how busy the advisor was, I was surprised by how effectively she mediated many points of confusion and possible pitfalls. One of the most helpful things about the ISA staff was just how much administrative clutter they moved out of the way for us. They enabled us to explore, which is what we were in Korea to do.</p>
<h3>Now that you are home, what is your biggest regret?</h3>
<p class="p1">I always lament that I didn't immerse myself in the language more or participate in more extracurriculars. When I went to China I tried to fix this by taking intensive language and enrolling myself in calligraphy; still, Korea has its own form of calligraphy. That would've been cool to know.</p>
<p class="p1">It would've been nice to know actual Koreans better (most of the people I became friends with were Chinese and European). Like I said, it can be very difficult, &nbsp;though I think Korean would've helped me on this front. I did a lot of good things though, like Tae Kwon Do and getting out of the city a lot. So maybe it was just due to the short time I spent.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day was like for you in South Korea.</h3>
<p class="p1">Typical day, with no events or nothing special? Typical isn't very typical for Americans in Korea. But! I would wake up very early to get breakfast, hopefully fall back asleep until class began. I loved my route to class, as it took me through a little forested walkway. You would see the older women with their visors on walking together. Then go through class.</p>
<p class="p1">When I got out I would take the subway to a cool place I had read about in my Lonely Planet book. I'd head back for Korean class and have a lot of funny exchanges with my European friends. Then we would hang out on campus and just talk on the stairs about this endlessly interesting place and find out more about each other. Despite the technology influx and smartphone crazes, Korea is a place where it&rsquo;s still more fun to be social.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing on your free time?</h3>
<p class="p1">I loved organizing adventures with friends. We had a Facebook page where we'd intentionally go out to find the spiciest foods or one where we set up excursions. One memorable experience in particular was a 2:00 a.m. trip to Noryangjin fish market to eat live octopus. We did a lot of &ldquo;night-owly&rdquo; things, and the Korean people in our social group probably found our misadventures amusing. The best things we did were organize these little trips: climbing a mountain on a weekend, checking out a place that supposedly has a great view, etc.</p>

<h3>What was your accommodation like?</h3>
<p class="p1">We were kept in dormitories. They had spots to take off your shoes before coming in, a bathroom with a shower, hide-away spots for clothes under the bed, a desk, and of course sliding windows with amazing views. The doors to your room were high-tech and could open with NFC ID cards. There was a fridge for keeping your things on each floor, and then there was a microwave and hot water maker on the first floor.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p1">Right outside were in-dorm convenience stores, haircuts (one of the best I've ever gotten), and banking. There was a bakery as well as a cafe, too. Again, lots of seating so you can socialize and events were sometimes held in the squares. We had a thing called Glocal Cafe; it was a good place to meet people, play board games, set up plans, and play Nintendo Wii.</p>
<h3>How has studying abroad in South Korea impacted your life?</h3>
<p class="p1">Well it will always be the experience I think back on when I think of my love for travel; it laid that foundation. New foods, new people, new places, days spent walking and looking. Coming home exhausted and happy about it. I know I was really living here. I can always point to this time and say that I was living life to the fullest.</p>
<p class="p1">It has pushed me to travel to many other places, and although that costs a lot of money you sometimes don't have, the return on investment is personally and professionally huge. Employers and colleagues have always been impressed by what I have learned abroad.</p>

<p>I would be lying if I didn&rsquo;t say that it was the only program my school offered in Korea. But, I was actually the first student from my university to go to Konkuk in the Spring term. I was actually recommended to go through the study abroad program by a professor that helped me with the whole process. ISA was brand new to our school with the Korean program. That made it more exciting because I was the one to see how the program was for future students.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, ISA looked like a really great program with some awesome benefits. I was excited to go on the excursions and see more of Korea besides the city of Seoul. I wanted to go out to Jeju and see the Hawaiian like atmosphere or the beaches of Busan. The excursions and also the fact that a language class was required of the program were two huge factors in me choosing ISA. I had been studying Korean for a year on my own, but I was so excited to be able to study in a school setting in the country where the language is spoken.</p>
<h3><b>What advice would you give to other students heading to Seoul for a study abroad program?</b></h3>
<p>If you want an experience of a lifetime you will need to have a grasp of the culture and a wide open heart. I say a grasp of the culture because it can be quite the culture shock when you first get here. You may listen to the music or watch Korean dramas, but that has nothing to do with when you actually live or study here. Honestly, a small grasp of the language and some of the key social cues, such as bowing or food etiquette, will help you greatly when you first come here.</p>
<p>I cannot stress enough that when you study abroad you have to go to that new country with an open heart. You have to be willing to be adventurous and maybe even change yourself a bit to fit in. There may be some things that are socially unacceptable that need to change during your stay. Of course it will be hard but in order to have a good trip there are some Western things that are not going to sit well with an Asian country. Studying abroad is the adventure of a lifetime, but you have to be open to the adventure.</p>
<p>In the end, it could easily lead to a new way of life that you didn&rsquo;t think you would enjoy. Something as simple as saying hello to a store owner when first walking into a store or bowing when receiving something can become a habit. Habits may be hard to change, but your heart for the country will only grow over time.</p>
<h3><b>What made Seoul an ideal place to study abroad in South Korea?</b></h3>
<p>There are so many opportunities here. You are in the biggest city in South Korea. The transportation here is amazing for any student because it can take you anywhere in the city. I guarantee you that the train can take you near the destination you are looking for no matter what. The metro is very cheap and super effective for any traveler.</p>
<p>There are a massive amount of things to do in Seoul. You can see a broadway show, the live filming of a television show, or a kpop concert; you can find a new restaurant to try, and so much more. There may be times when you feel bored, but I promise you that you will always find something to do. It can be as simple as studying at the local caf&eacute; near campus - you may even spot a kpop star on the way. The opportunities to explore the city and its culture are endless. With amazing transportation and so much to see, you are bound to get more out of your education than just your classes.</p>
<h3><b>Which course did you enjoy the most during your study abroad program?</b></h3>
<p>I was a Communications Television Arts major at my home university, which is essentially film studies. When I studied at Konkuk, I actually had two favorite classes. My two favorite classes were Korean Cinema History and Understanding Global Cultures. But, out of those two my absolute favorite was Korean Cinema History for a few different reasons. I found it fascinating to study how the film industry grew in Korean society. It amazed me how far behind Korea was in terms of film technology and editing software compared to America throughout the 70s to the 90s.</p>
<p>I was fascinated to see how much they grew and some of the more risqu&eacute; concepts that they started to film. Some of my favorite films are Korean films. They have such a great grasp of the thriller concept and they are very good at twists and turns. I wanted to study film here to someday and work in the international film industry. I wanted a good understanding of how the film industry was developed here and how far they have come.</p>
<p>The class was very interesting and we even got to watch some Korean films. We watched a completely silent film that was narrated by a guy that was standing on stage in front of an audience watching the film behind him. I was so fascinated by the whole concept. I learned a lot and as an added bonus we had some celebrities in our class that go to Konkuk. Apparently, it&rsquo;s not out of the ordinary to see them, but my friends and I were still a little star struck.&nbsp;</p>
<h3><b>How would you say studying abroad has impacted your life?</b></h3>
<p>I have been studying abroad since I was in high school. It started when I went on a trip to Italy for two weeks that my Mom insisted on, even though I was hesitant. It ended up being an amazing experience and I knew that I wanted to live overseas once I was done with school. After Italy, I went to London, Paris, and finally South Korea.</p>
<p>I find nothing more rewarding than going to a new country and really diving into the culture. At first you don&rsquo;t know what to do, but as you spend more time there, you become acclimated and more in tune with your surroundings. Study abroad has impacted me in the best way possible. I have grown so much as a person and have grown a heart for people and different cultures. I cannot stress enough that being in a new country with a new culture will reveal to you a brand new you, if you let the experience mold you. Going on new adventures, stepping out of your comfort zone, and just letting go will lead to something amazing.</p>
<p>This trip with ISA was one of the greatest memories and I will cherish all the people I met through the program. I still keep in contact daily with many of the students that I met through the program, and we hope to meet again in South Korea next year. I came to South Korea during my last semester of college and it was the best semester of my college career.</p>
<p>I am now living in South Korea as an elementary teacher full time and a musical actress part-time. I feel like there is nothing holding me back from what I want to achieve in this new country. The benefit of studying abroad is that you come to find that there is nothing that you can&rsquo;t do. If you have the support of your parents, your school, and your friends (no matter how much they don&rsquo;t want you to leave), then there should be nothing holding you back. It&rsquo;s an adventure of a lifetime and it could lead to something amazing. You could realize new things about yourself that change your way of thinking for life.</p>
<p>If you would have told me my freshman year of college that I was going to live in South Korea after I graduated, I would have told you that you were crazy. When opportunities to be overseas present themselves, your perspective of life and of the world change for the better. Honestly, the impact of study abroad is something that I can&rsquo;t really put into words. But, in one word I would say the impact is growth. Growth in not only who you are, but who you become later on. The experience will change you and continue to change you as you go about your daily life. You will remember your study abroad experience for many years to come.&nbsp;</p>

<h3><strong>Why did you choose ISA over other study abroad programs?</strong></h3>
<p>I think it all came down to cost and benefits for me. I wanted the most bang for my buck. When I compared other programs to ISA, ISA was just a better fit for me. I think <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/articles/a-first-timer-s-guide-to-choosing-a-study-abroad-program rel="" target="_self" className="link">finding the right program</a> is one of the most important choices one can make prior to actually studying abroad. For example, if someone really wanted to stay in a certain city, there is absolutely no need for him or her to pay for a program that have excursions outside of the city and vice versa.</p>
<h3><strong>You’re from Mount Mary University, what advice would you give to other Mount Mary students going to </strong><a href=https://www.goabroad.com/study-abroad/search/south-korea/seoul/study-abroad-1 rel="" target="_self" className="link"><strong>study abroad in Seoul</strong></a><strong>?</strong></h3>
<p>My advice to other Mount Mary students is to join clubs and get yourself out there. Yes, there are a lot of Korean students who are shy and intimidated around foreigners, especially foreigners whose native tongue is English, but once you get to know them many of them open up to you. They can become great friends who show you around Seoul, and they are very helpful in translating for you.</p>
<h3><strong>How did you choose Seoul? Why is Seoul the best place to study abroad in South Korea?</strong></h3>
<p>I really didn't have a choice in which city I went to. ISA only has one site in South Korea. However,  I definitely knew that I wanted to study in the capital city of South Korea. I assumed that everything would be in Seoul. Indeed, Seoul lived up to its hype.</p>
<p>Seoul has awesome public transportation through its subway system, which is very convenient for traveling within the city. There are a variety of places to shop, and Seoul has an established cafe culture - there is variety of cafes for every type of person. There were also many events going on in the four months that I was there. One event that I went to was the celebration of Buddhism’s birthday. Beautiful Paper lanterns/ statues were set up in the man made river Cheonggyecheon.</p>
<h3><strong>What was your favorite class and why?</strong></h3>
<p>My favorite class was my Shakespeare class. My friend and I were the only two foreigners in the class, and we were so impressed by all the students who were willing to take on Shakespeare. One of the cool things that we did was filming a scene from a Shakespeare play. My group did "A Midsummer Night's Dream."</p>
<h3><strong>How has study abroad impacted your life?</strong></h3>
<p>Studying Abroad has definitely impacted my future. It has ignited in me a passion for international awareness and causes. I didn't know which field of Social Work I wanted to enter, but after studying abroad I decided to go into International Social Work. Before I studied abroad most of my friends were Americans, but now I have friends from all around the world. I now love to learn about different cultures, and never again do I just want to visit a country - I want to live in it.</p>
