A Guide to Study Abroad in Kuwait

Locations

Kuwait is a tiny country in the upper corner of the Persian Gulf, tucked between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. You can go from border to border in less than two hours! While the country revolves around its capital city, there are plenty of places to see, including nine islands off the coast.

Kuwait City. The capital is the number one choice for expats coming to Kuwait, be they students or workers. It’s got everything— great food, great accommodation, and great shopping. Some say there are limited things to do in Kuwait, and unless you like eating out and visiting malls there’s not much on the agenda, but at least Kuwait does those things right. Kuwaitis are mega foodies who enjoy everything from spicy Indian to Persian, Arabian, and Mediterranean dishes. This diversity is not only reflected in the cuisine, but also the makeup of the universities and the courses offered there.

Salmiya. This coastal city is home to numerous mosques, an aquarium, a Scientific Center, a football stadium, and shopping districts reminiscent of Kuwait’s once-numerous traditional souk bazaars. Many students choose it over the capital for its centrally-located schools within walking distance of downtown. Among them are the American University of Kuwait, Gulf English School, the French School of Kuwait, and the nation’s oldest school, the Pakistan School and College. Students interested in design can visit the artificial Green Island, a manufacturing marvel that managed to bring sand in from other countries, and grow greenery more akin to a jungle than the desert region it belongs to.
