Amman, founded in 7000 B.C., the capital and largest city in Jordan, is situated in a rolling area of northwest Jordan, just twenty-five miles from the Dead Sea. Seven surrounding hills, known as "jabals," helped shape the city. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, having been home to various civilizations over the years – the Ammonites, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Nabateans, Romans, Byzantines, and Umayyad Arabs. Today, Amman is a prospering modern metropolis filled with ancient ruins, art galleries, and museums. It serves as a hub for commerce and trade in the Middle East. It is a multicultural and multi-denominational city with a tradition of welcoming refugees and immigrants from nearby countries. The program is based at the University of Jordan, established in 1962, the country's oldest public four-year institution of higher education. Through coursework, extracurricular activities with local peers, internships, or volunteer work, students are expected to "live the language" in the capital of Jordan.
