Literature Study Abroad Programs in France

Studying literature in France might seem like a great way to satisfy your inner book worm in a beautiful, foreign city like Paris. But studying literature abroad is no read in the park; it’s a rigorous discipline complete with analytical essays, oral presentations, and in class assignments about the art and historical importance of a specific author or piece of literature related to French culture. Foreign students can expect a passion and seriousness in French literature classes similar to that of any science based subject.

A Guide to Studying Literature in France

Why Study Literature Abroad

Literature and foreign language majors or minors who want to improve their foreign language skills and understanding of French culture should study literature abroad. Having the hands-on linguistic and cultural immersion experience will help students to better understand the cultural significance of the literary work they examine.

One of the perks of studying literature in France is learning about French history and culture through fiction. Students will have the unique opportunity to read unabridged French written splendor that the French consider classic literary works of their culture in their native language.

Students can bring their lessons outside of the classroom by visiting the places that were immortalized in French literature to further make a connection with the culture, language, and subject - that’s something that they couldn’t do when studying French literature anywhere else in the world except France. In addition to making the physical connection with literary works, students will also gain a better understanding of the culture and the historical context of the literature, as well as improve their French language skills.

The Semester of a Lifetime!

November 07, 2025by: Ainsley Pierce - United StatesProgram: AIFS Abroad in Grenoble, France (UGA): Semester
10

I went abroad with AIFS in fall 2024 at Université Grenoble Alpes, and I was very attracted by the immersion and language-learning aspect that AIFS and the UGA program provided. I was placed in a wonderful homestay (with pets!), and I knew I could count on either my host or the AIFS resident director if I needed anything at all, from homework help to personal matters like homesickness. AIFS supported me--and my parents--during the entire registration and departure process. There were a lot of nerves going into the semester, but I was put at ease by how welcoming and helpful my host and resident director were, as well as the new friends I made at UGA. The AIFS resident director helped familiarize me with the city, and I got to experience so many aspects of French culture from cuisine to history to art while exploring Grenoble during the semester. My classes taught me a lot about French culture as well, including social and linguistic customs that you I never learned from a textbook. My French skills increased exponentially from the beginning of the semester to the end thanks to the immersive courses in UGA's CUEF program. Being abroad not only showed me how adaptable and confident I could become in my independence, but I also got to make friends from opposite ends of the world that I still stay in touch with today. I would recommend AIFS Abroad to any student looking to be challenged academically, is adventurous, and wants to go out of their comfort zone to explore the world and the culture and friendships it has to offer.
