USAC France: Pau - French Language & European Studies

I loved my experience in Pau! I had no idea that spending 5 weeks there would alter my life forever. It opened my eyes to how different French culture is in comparison to American culture. When I was little, I idolized my mother because she was my version of the American dream. I wanted to be just as hardworking as her. Now as a college student majoring in biochemistry and minoring in French, I am expected to be ambitious. Whereas my performance looks great on resumes, I often get obsessed with the future. However, when I was in Pau I realized how the locals prioritized living instead of performing. Life is much slower there. People don't often hurry to their next location, adults enjoy parks on weekdays instead of just weekends, and folks seem to appreciate silence instead of distracting themselves with media all the time. Not only did I start adopting some of these habits, but learning a new language encouraged me to think about each word I said. I had to slow down and savor everything I was doing. It was the most present I have ever been and arguably the most I've truly lived in my life. The locals are extremely friendly and will help you learn French. The education at the University of Pau was phenomenal. I felt like being immersed in French and having professors that are willing to work with you was a game changer. I highly recommend this experience even if you don't intend on learning French. Exposing yourself to a new culture may encourage you to reflect on your own lifestyle choices.

In Pau, I had an incredible experience learning French in an international classroom, where the only shared language between all my peers and I was French. It pushed me out of my comfort zone to speak French every single day and learn new vocabulary and grammar skills. On top of that, I stayed with a wonderful host mom in the center of the historic district of Pau, literally a 3 minute walk from a medieval castle. This made it easy to explore the city and connect with local restaurants, businesses, and festivals.

There was a big group trip I got taken on with people who came abroad with me from other universities in the United States. It was the Paris trip and it was something I’ve been dreaming about since I was little. I got to see the Effile tower for the first time and it was an amazing experience. I almost cried.

I thoroughly enjoyed my semester abroad in Pau. It is a beautiful city in a beautiful country. For the most part, my professors were very friendly and I feel like my French skills improved greatly. I enjoyed the walkability of the city and campus, and would love to visit again in the future. The USAC staff was supportive and I felt like I could go to them with any issues.

My experience was good but mainly because I went out of my way to make it good. I was in a dorm, but we did not have wifi for at least two weeks of arriving. Throughout the semester, power and water was shut off without us knowing and it was shut off for hours in the morning or at night leaving us like that before going to class. Staff for arrival was helpful at times, but many other times they'd force some students who didn't speak French to go and figure out things like insurance or buying phone plans by themselves. I was lucky to have guidance and a good head on my shoulders but if you're not very independent and extroverted, this program isn't very supportive of that. I will say Pau was fun and the people are amazing, the university was pretty nice in itself, and the insurance that comes with the program was really nice, I took lots of advantage of the mental health care.

The usac program in Pau is great! It’s a really nice city, and the advisors did a great job planning trips for the group and helping us when we needed it. The only critique I have is that I wish we’d had more events/opportunities to meet the people living in Pau, but nonetheless it was still a great program.

I was in Pau for 4 months and it was filled with outing and cultural experiences. I stayed with the host family and had the opportunity to see what the day-to-day life was like for a French family. Going out, and my life was a big part of my study abroad experience. I enjoyed speaking to the shopkeepers who were always welcoming and speaking to the servers and bartenders who were always interested to talk to the foreign students. This made immersing myself and adapting myself to the culture very easy.

I am truly grateful for my time abroad. Not only did I get to improve my language skills which was my primary goal, but I also found a new community, experiences, and many more things I would not have imagined! Through the constant community and exploration, I was able to make a home from what seemed like a strange place at first. I created a relationships with a host family and friends that I have remained connected with. I was able to explore many parts of France that not many people know about which has made it exciting to share since I have come back home! There is so much that studying abroad has brought me and I will forever say that studying abroad was one of the best experiences I have had thus far!

Pau was a very small, very beautiful town. Because of it's size, it was easy to talk to strangers and better my French. The people were very friendly, and were always willing to talk to me and better my poor French. The city was very walkable and there were several restaurants, and public places to visit. During the summer, there are many outdoor bars you can go to facing the Pyrenees mountains where you can meet other locals. There is also a beautiful river you can visit and swim in. It was also very easy to travel throughout France and in Spain on weekends.

Studying in Pau France was an experience that I will never forget. It was more than just studying. It was living and breathing in a new atmosphere that allows one to develop their character, skills, and make friendships that will last a lifetime. I remember my arrival to Pau, getting off the train station, strolling up a steep pathway with my hiking backpack to the Boulevard des Pyrenees, and feeling like I was in a fairytale. The city was embellished with beaming, thriving foliage and architecture that takes one’s breath away, all framed by the beauty of the surrounding mountains. The geographical placement wasn’t the only part that I loved about Pau, but my professors were the best teachers I have ever had. Every class was an adventure, every subject intriguing, challenging. As we all laughed, learned, and ate together, we quickly became good friends. When we didn’t know an answer to a question, we’d look to each other for help. There was such a bond build between the students as we were each in a place we didn’t know, all surrounded by people we didn’t know and no one was competing against the other. If I could recommend doing one thing in life, it is to go abroad! Go experience things you never have. Make yourself uncomfortable, because you will grow. The benefits of it are immeasurable. It’s an experience incomparable to anything else.

Studying abroad in Pau, France was an unforgettable experience! Not only did my French language skills such as comprehension, pronunciation, articulation, and writing improve immensely, but my knowledge of the culture increased exceptionally. Pau is the perfect choice for anyone wanting to increase their language skills and also have an authentic French experience. You have the opportunity to learn in a classroom setting with amazing, dedicated professors, and also immerse yourself in the culture with program-led excursions and activities on campus and downtown. Pau is wonderfully located with some of the most popular French cities close by and the Pyrenees Mountains are only a bus ride away. This was not just an academic experience either as I discovered a lot about myself and grew my independence and problem-solving skills. I was able to travel all over with new people I met to see amazing sights and places and experience more than just one new culture. I met so many wonderful people, students, and locals, who helped create the best experience! I will always remember the memories I made and the people I met. I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to study abroad to take it. You will gain a whole new perspective on life and a whole new confidence in yourself academically and personally.

This program allowed for the opportunity to live abroad for 4 months and be immersed as a university student in a small city in the south of France. Alongside studying the French language and culture as well as living with a host family I had the opportunity to travel and learn more about France and Europe. It was an unforgettable experience which gave me a perspective which can’t be seen in any other way.

It is no surprise that being in a new country can be scary and uncomfortable. Culture shock is so much more than the food and clothes being different. Culture shock is the biggest motivation to immerse yourself into the culture and truly put your energy into understanding the language and the social cues. Before I left to go to Pau, I was terrified, but as soon as I got on the plane, I new I made the right choice. The culture is beautiful in France and the mountains, architecture, and beaches are truly breathtaking. If a student is on the fence because of fear of the unknown, my best advise is to play in to it. Accept the fear and use it as a tool to learn as much as possible. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to complete a semester abroad.

I went to Pau to study Forestry and also took a language class there to supplement my time. I loved being a part of the trips and excursions. I met many fun and interesting people while there in France. I have many foreign friends that I would like to go see again.

Positives: The staff arranged for a tour of Paris that costed only € 750, which considering that cost covered the hotel, some meals, a hotel down to Pau, metro access, and access to attractions, this was a good deal. The people were nice, professors were highly friendly. My lodging was affordable, and they added credit hours to my course selection without changing my bill. They encourage you to speak French here and highly discourage English, which is the opposite of any other French city. It helped me to learn and grow. They had guided tours where transportation and at least one attraction and meal were covered. Negatives: The course offerings are almost entirely language, not as much opportunities for advancement in your major (outside of language, there are 1/2 electives, not likely to transfer to a degree plan.) Additionally, you will have no classes with actual local classmates. You will be in a separate building dedicated to instructing French to foreigners, even if you do have B2 or C1 level. I didn’t receive Internet for the first week or my student card for the first few weeks. The card I understood, but the program communicates through email, so providing Internet should have been possible considering receiving messages required me to walk more than half a mile to the nearest WiFi outlet. I am writing this at the end. After your main classes, they add another week of just electives, but force you to go to class every day for 3 hours for each elective you’re in. I find this highly unnecessary as I’m not entirely sure what course content warrants this in the one elective I’m continuing (the other ended), and I think they should have just ended the semester when regular classes end.

I really enjoyed studying in Pau, France. It's a smaller town, so I got to practice my language skills every day because many people don't speak English or don't expect it to be spoken. There are some downsides to studying in a smaller town like less transportation (everything stops pretty early in the evening), and not a lot of things to do in general. But I stayed with a host family which was my favorite part. They were able to show me around the city and introduce me to places I never would have found on my own. I really got to experience French culture with them and I'm so grateful to have spent a semester there! Merci!

Studying abroad with the USAC program in Pau, France has been absolutely amazing! Living with a host family has not only provided a cozy and welcoming environment but has also been instrumental in improving my French language skills and boosting my confidence. The professors here at the local university are top-notch. They're super friendly and approachable, which makes learning so much more enjoyable. Pau itself is a picturesque city. It has charming historic architecture and a vibrant cultural scene so there's always something new to explore. The surrounding region is equally breathtaking, with a lot of opportunities for outdoor activities nearby like hiking, surfing, and skiing. USAC has been incredibly helpful throughout the entire process, from the initial planning stages to departure. Their support and guidance have been invaluable, ensuring a smooth transition into my study abroad experience. With their assistance, I felt confident and prepared to make the most of my time in Pau. Overall, I'm beyond grateful for this experience. Studying abroad in Pau has been a dream come true, and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

I have known I wanted to study abroad since the moment I started searching for colleges. French had become a very integral part of my life, and I knew that at some point to get better I would have to study abroad and immerse myself in French life and culture. And I am so glad I decided to do that with the program in Pau, France. Pau is not a huge city, but I find that to be an advantage. The downtown isn't always crowded and you can really feel like you are a part of the culture rather than just a tourist passing through. One of my favorite experiences so far has been attending Carnaval, a celebration of Béarnais culture that I truly got to participate in. The program staff has been absolutely wonderful, and attending classes at the university has become a habit that I will miss. I feel like I am getting the most out of my time abroad and that is a fabulous feeling.

In the fall of 2023, I took part in the USAC Pau, France program. I've always been interested in learning French and studying abroad, so this program sounded ideal. I chose Pau over Lyon since it is smaller and I thought there would be fewer English speakers. The first thing I noticed when I got there was the scenery. Everything was green and vibrant. I am really glad that I made the choice to stay with a host family. They made sure I had a fantastic experience and were really accommodating. I would recommend staying with a host family to gain a better understanding of the culture and practice the language. Although the town is small, it is not as small as most people believe. There are plenty of stores, so you don't have to worry about bringing goods from the States. The town is always hosting community events, and a short trip to Spain is always an option due to its proximity. I am happy with the choice I made and would recommend it to others.

This was my first trip abroad, and alone at that, but the community of students and staff in the program made me so much more comfortable. USAC created a perfect balance of structure, freedom, and excursions that promoted learning and exploring in ways I never have. It was a seriously priceless experience!

USAC provided the best possible time abroad that I could have imagined; each weekend we went on field trips to nearby areas, including a hike in the Pyrenees and a trip to Basque Country. Words can’t describe how meaningful my time in Pau was with my host family and friends I made from around the world. Truly a time I will never forget, thank you USAC PAU!

My study abroad experience in France was an unforgettable journey of personal and academic growth. Living in a foreign country, I immersed myself in the rich tapestry of French culture, from savoring croissants at local cafés to exploring iconic landmarks like the Chateau's around Pau. The opportunity to study in a different educational system expanded my horizons and enhanced my French language skills, while making friendships with people from all around the world enriched my global perspective. With each challenge and triumph, I embraced the spirit of adventure and discovery, leaving me with cherished memories and a profound appreciation for the beauty of cultural exchange. This is a program I would recommend anyone to try out, it's an experience i want to relive again.

My experience abroad was learning constantly on the go. From learning the French language in the classroom to learning social etiquettes on the town, I was always finding out something new about the world and myself. I recommend going abroad simply for the adventure, to get out of your comfort zone and learn something new.

My summer spent in Pau was truly unforgettable! I made amazing friends, got to practice my French, immersed myself in French culture, and spent the afternoons strolling down boulevards with spectacular views of the castle. We explored the region in many of my classes, and Pau offered easy access to transportation to set out on adventures of our own. Studying abroad certainly calls for its fair share of going out of your comfort zone, but my professors, the administrators, and my friends were a great support system along the way. I’m so excited to bring my friends and family back to Pau one day!

I loved my time in Pau. I studied in July of 2022, so I was there during the time that French students are not on campus. When I was there, I was there with other adult students who were learning French. So while the majority of us were American, there were Irish, English, Brazilian, etc. But the only French people were the teachers in the classes. For my living situation, I lived in a home stay with Marie Jo, who was awesome. She was super kind and willing to drive me places (like a concert) that were outside of public transport times. Her dog, Gribouille, was also an added bonus. Living with her gave me many opportunities to speak French and to practice the language.

I absolutely adored my time abroad with USAC! I studied abroad in Fall 2022 in Pau, France where I took French language classes to improve my French. In addition, I immersed myself in the French culture by taking various opportunities offered by the program to interact with the community. I excelled in meeting new people, learning new ideas, and seeing new cultures. My experience abroad has made me confident enough to move to France permanently!

I had good time! If you are particularly interested in academic rigor or cultural immersion, I would go during fall or spring. During the summer the workload was light and most of the students on campus were international. I did not really get to know any French people well outside of my host family.

You know that pull to grow. It's uncomfortable and scary and exhilarating. You start to feel it as soon as the thought comes into your head-- what if I said yes? Yes to attending an event where you don't know anyone well. Yes to applying for a job that you really want. Yes to jumping off a bridge into water. Yes to ANYTHING where you risk to fall or fail. I applied to many USAC programs before France. It was during the pandemic, so I fell and failed every time. A year passed and I was about to give up on my dream of studying abroad. But then I looked at the France program and I felt a pull. I had studied Spanish, not French. And now I was about to graduate. It didn't make any sense. But what if I tried one more time... When I received the admission notification, I said yes. Two semesters as part of this program changed me more than the past four years of university ever had. There is no equivalent in terms of cultural, social, emotional, and intellectual growth to being plunged into a foreign country. You simply have no choice but to grow into the enormous space that has opened up around you full of new sights and sounds and smells that you never could have imagined. There is nothing familiar around you to make you feel safe. But there is also nothing familiar around you to tell you who you are or what you are capable of. This is the potential of freedom. You can be who you have always been scared to be because there are no longer any limits. You can say yes to everything. Yes to speaking a language you're not fluent in. Yes to activities and course subjects you never would have tried before. Yes, to field trips to cities you've never heard of. Yes, to starting conversations, yes to being confident in the face of the fear. Of course, this is not to say that you really are alone. The Pau, France program is impressively supportive. The on-site staff are kind and deeply invested in the personal development of each student who comes. You will never feel unsafe or unsure of what to do next. But the experience is yours, and whether you want to focus on the culture and language of France, the bonds of new and profound friendships with interesting people from all backgrounds, or your own growth as a competent and open-minded traveler and observer of the world, you will walk away from this program with all three. The world is waiting. Oh, and don't forget to bring good walking shoes.

I studied in Pau France! I really enjoyed it and learned so much about the culture and myself in general. Being immersed in a completely different culture gives you a new perspective on how to handle situations as well as teaches you about you different your place of living is from others

Bonjour! My name is Shannon Fitzgerald I was a part of the USAC class of spring 2023 In Pau France. Before coming on my trip I was extremely nervous about leaving the US. I thought about how hard it will be to adjust to French culture or not making true friendships. I didn't think my French was good enough to live in France. These are all normal things to feel before leaving the US. Once I got to Pau I realized that everyone was having feelings of dough or nervousness. My first day in Pau I remember feeling extremely comforted by our USAC advisors Magali and Robena, they made my time in Pau very enjoyable. Pau is known for its beautiful mountains and stunning scenery. Spending three months there gave me ample opportunity to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of the region. Having amazing friends is always a highlight of any study abroad experience. Building friendships with locals and fellow students can greatly enhance the overall experience and provide a deeper understanding of the local culture. I had incredible French professors. Good teachers can make a significant difference in language learning, and their expertise and guidance contributed to my progress in the French language. It's essential to have supportive and knowledgeable instructors who can help you navigate the intricacies of a foreign language.

While I went on an adventure to finish my college degree in France, I stood on the snow of the Pyrenees Mountains and walked into the waves of the Sea of Biscay also. I studied the French culture in my classes and walked along the city streets literally soaking up the culture in real time amongst the French natives. My fellow students listened to street music during the weekend and improved our French by ordering food from the menu. I also tasted wine with honey in it and I could absolutely taste the flavor of the honey in the wine!

It was the happiest 4 months of maybe my whole life! The USAC coordinators placed me with a host family that I had a lot in common with, who were very kind and active in the community. It was interesting to spend time with them getting in insider's view on France and an outsider's view on the US. I loved all my classes, the teachers were so amazing and we did a lot of fun projects like making a podcast for a the uni radio and participating in a dimpolat simulation. I made so many good friends I still keep in touch with, joined a rock climbing club, went skiing with the university, got to explore Basque and culture, and did day trips to the mountains and the ocean. The pre-abroad process was a pain and very confusing and frustrating, but in the end it was so worth it!

Last semester, in the fall of 2022, I had the amazing experience of studying abroad in Pau, France. I studied the French language as well as the history of art. All of my classes were conducted solely in French. My class contained students from all around the world and our common language was not English, but French. Being fully immersed in the French language and culture excelled my language skills and I now feel confident living in the country and speaking the language. In addition to my studies, I had the opportunity to visit countries I had not visited before. For example, my study abroad program arranged a trip to San Sebastian, Spain for the students. During our fall break, a few students and I organized a trip to Brussels and Amsterdam. Being able to travel around Europe while studying French as well as art history was a dream come true. I lived with an amazing host family that took me in as if I was truly a part of their family. This made the culture shock much easier to handle and gave me a sense of safety while living in a foreign country. Overall, this study abroad experience positively changed my life and has equipped me with skills I would not have acquired anywhere else.

Studying abroad in Pau, France was an incredible experience! I've been studying the French language for 8 years now, so to be able to completely immerse myself in the culture and learn the language from native speakers was an absolute dream of mine. Being able to study abroad in Pau has taught me there really is no better way to learn than to completely immerse yourself in the experience. The city is beautiful and filled with so much history everywhere you look that you learn something new everyday! The program directors were wonderful and make sure you are settled and comfortable (they even took us to purchase bus passes so we could travel around the city with ease!). I learned many valuable things on this trip and made memories that will last a lifetime. I could not recommend a better study abroad program!

If there's one thing to know about me, it's that I will do anything to make my dreams come true. If there's one thing to know about the USAC program in Pau, France, it's that it will fulfill and exceed all of your dreams and expectations about studying abroad, leaving you open to a whole new world you didn't even know existed. Personally, all I wanted to do when looking for a program to study abroad with was learn French and allow myself to be molded by whatever surroundings I found myself in. In the case of this program, however, I came out of my study abroad experience with so much more than anticipated. I found myself a new family abroad, a new identity abroad, and overall a new sense of self-understanding and global-understanding. The USAC Pau program is perfect for those who are wanting the best of both worlds when studying abroad- a strong cultural richness and personal experience with the community, seeing as it is a smaller city; and a taste of the surrounding busy cities and countries that lend to the personal growth found in traveling and urban-living. The program advisors were wonderful, supporting us with whatever we needed, even if it was just a good laugh or cry (because there will be tough times still). The teaching staff at this school also make it a point to personally know and have a relationship with each and every one of us. I still keep in contact with them and plan on seeing them as soon as I find myself back there. Overall, I could not recommend this program enough and I hope that this review helps a bit in your search for your next adventure in life. Bonne chance et bon voyage.

I had an incredible time studying abroad in Pau. The opportunities we were given to go out and explore the city and surrounding areas was really special, as well as the guided excursions learning all about the history, culture, and customs of Pau and the regions of Bearn and Basque country. My French improved exponentially as I was fully immersed in French language all around me. I also made amazing friends that will last me a lifetime! I think fondly of my memories from the summer often, and am itching to go back to my little corner of France that I came to call home.

Bonjour! My experience in Pau was amazing! Arriving in France we were immediately greeted by some of the nicest people I've ever met. Magali and Robina were amazing program directors who were ready at the drop of a hat to help us in any way. We were immediately moved into our apartment complexes and our friends who were doing homestay went to their houses. It was such an incredible experience to be independent in a foreign country. I loved how easily accessible everything was especially through public transportation which is leaps and bounds ahead of the US. I enjoyed going to class every day which was fully immersive and I learned so much I made lifelong friends there who I still keep in contact with even though we're thousands of miles apart. The city itself was breathtaking. The Chateau, the parks, museums, clubs, restaurants and shops were amazing. I am anxious to visit again. Although the heat wave posed some issues for travel, the weather was overall pleasant, and it made traveling through the Pyrenees such a memorable experience. I loved visiting the Basque country and getting to know all the locals, they were such unique and kind people. Pau was truly the time of my life. Everyday since I’ve come back to the US, I long to return to the Béarn region. Because of my time in Pau, I have decided to apply to the TAPIF program to teach English in france. I really hope I get accepted. And if I could somehow teach in Pau, that would be a dream come true. Thank you so much USAC for this opportunity!

After having my semester in Pau cancelled in 2020, I was worried I would never have a chance to truly experience France and living abroad. Fortunately, I was able to do the summer session 1 program during my last semester in undergrad. I was not sure about how I would be able to have a super great experience in only 4 weeks, but this program exceeded all my expectations! Daily classes took up about half the day, and we spent each afternoon exploring the city. Additionally, went on multiple organized cultural excursions each week, which was my absolute favorite part of the program. I loved having the opportunity to go hiking in the Pyrenees, going fruit and vegetable picking at the cuillette, and having a tour of the city hall of Pau -- all things I would never do myself! Additionally, my decision to live in a home stay was a point of worry leading up to the program, but I am so happy I did it. I got to eat authentic French meals and have truly interesting conversations with many French people. Overall, I would highly recommend this program to everyone, especially those at the intermediate level of French, (2-3 years), as the classes were a little easier than I would've preferred as someone who had taken 4 years of college French already.

I spent a month in summer session 2 in Pau and overall had a great time! The best part of the experience was the weekend trips I took to other areas of south France and North Spain, which are short train or bus rides that you can get cheap tickets to. I made good friends and my classes were pretty easy with no homework (I think they are easier in the summer than during the school year). I don't think I would want to be there longer than a month because the options for activities to do in the actual city during the week were slim, but I am glad I chose this program. The school arranges fun excursions, the staff is great, and my host family was awesome.

Spending a month in Pau (July of 22) was awesome. It had its pros and cons though. Biggest con was that when you go to France in July, there is just simply not a campus life since the students are not there. Furthermore, my experience was not with other college students exclusively, it was also with other people who were learning French and also living in Pau. Think of it like a language learning course a local college will have. So instead of a classroom of just Americans, there were Brits, Polish, Nigerians, Ukranians, Russians, Irish, Australians and more. That was very interesting and I'm very happy with that part of the experience. However, my course was not very difficult and felt really redundant. Furthermore, we had 2 different professors so it almost felt like 2 different courses were going on different days. Aside from that it was awesome. My host mom (and her dog) were incredible; so kind and welcoming. She even would come and pick me up at different points (though I never tried to take advantage of her in that way; I would walk home if it got too late.) She took me and some friends to go see the Tour de France one day, and even took me out to a hike to see part of the Atlantic Wall. She was incredible. She was also willing for me to eat with her all the time, which I was very thankful for. I watched lots of French TV and that helped my language skills. More than anything, my host mom made my experience great.

I had a great experience studying in Pau. The on-site staff were very helpful and very involved in planning field trips during the 4-week program. The only complaint I have is that my dorm room was very dusty and dirty when I arrived and it was clear that it had not been cleaned prior to my arrival. I found it surprising that I was expected to clean it thoroughly before my departure when it was not clean upon arrival.

I studied abroad with USAC Pau for two months in summer 2019. My experience wouldn't have been the same if it wasn't for the staff. The two program advisors, Magali and Robina, are truly exceptional. They care about the well-being and success of each student. They take time to get to know you and offer all sorts of resources to make you feel welcomed. All the excursions were well-organized, educational and very fun! It was always a great time in group excursions because we had fabulous guides and great food. The excursions are optional, however I strongly encourage participating in each one. I was able to go hiking twice in the Pyrenees Mountains, visit surrounding cities in the French Basque Coast and Country, go rafting, visit the most relaxing spa and a beautiful zoo in the mountains. USAC Pau was one of the first programs opened, therefore they are very experienced. The duration of classes lasted three hours, Monday- Friday. Language courses were the perfect amount of challenging, yet not overwhelming. Flexibility within placement is offered if you don't feel comfortable at the level you were placed. Classes were mixed with students from the USA as well as with students from around the globe. This made class an engaging and interactive experience. The city of Pau is walkable and also easy to get around on bikes. Public transportation is offered consistently during the week days, however it's not as consistent during the weekends. The beautiful city of Pau has an enchanting view of the Pyrenees Mountains, which will leave you speechless every single time. There are many fun local events happening, like festivals, concerts, sporting events, etc. We were blessed with the opportunity to see Pau come alive as the Tour de France passed through. The location of Pau is perfect if you want to explore South Western France and Northern Spain. I took weekend trips to Bordeaux, Toulouse, Bilbao, San Sebastian and even a day trip to Lourdes. They were very economical thanks to convenient location of Pau and the cheap FlixBus prices. The support, education and entertaining experiences I had in USAC Pau will always be unforgettable. Although a small city, it truly offers the opportunity for full-immersion. If you are looking for an authentic study abroad experience, USAC Pau knows how to help you achieve it.

This was my second study abroad in France, my first was through my home university. USAC’s program was amazing! They arranged several activities for us included in the price, like hiking in the Pyrénées, river rafting, cheese tasting, going to Bayonne and Biarritz, and much more. They also found an AMAZING host family for me. The classes were challenging and I learned and grew so much. Thank you to Robina and Magali for being so supportive to all of the students! I always felt very supported and that I could quickly get answers to any questions. I highly recommend this program!!

I loved my experience in PAU!! The USAC on-site staff were always available to answer questions, and students were constantly stopping by their office to chat. My host family was amazing--USAC did a great job of pairing my friends with host families too! There was a lot of activities available to meet the locals and practice our French! USAC did a great job sponsoring trips for us to experience the surrounding cities and countries--from the Pays-Basque Region, to Spain, to Bordeaux!

USAC Pau was truly an immersive cultural experience. While Pau is not the most popular city in France it is situated near the Basque region and is a perfect size city to feel comfortable in while still having lots to explore.

I had the wonderful experience of studying in Pau, France. This city may be small but it is full of many things to do and see! From the Boulevard de Pyrenees, white water rafting, the Tour de France tribute, city center which holds many concerts, festivals, markets, and more, along with being perfectly situated right next to Spain and many popular tourist areas in the south of France! I can proudly say my French has improved greatly since I first arrived on campus, but I do have to admit that the campus is very old and is very behind technology wise. Although the city of Pau is quite beautiful with its palm trees and stone walkways, the campus is full of weeds and the buildings are old and don't even have air conditioning or fans (which I learned is the case in most buildings and homes in France!). Also, I was put under the impression that no one in Pau speaks English, which is far from the truth. Almost every single person I talked to knew at least a few words in English and could get by with it if you were confused. On another note, I am an avid hiker and was also told that Pau is very close to the Pyrenees. Although Pau may be an hour's drive from the nearest point of the Mountains, this is only by car. Only being able to use public transportation, it is pretty much impossible to get to the mountains by yourself. I am happy to say that the university offers a hiking course that I was able to sign up for that drove students to the mountains for about a 15 euro fee. At the end of the day, Pau is a great place to spend your time studying abroad and being put into a French atmosphere with friendly people!

I really enjoyed studying abroad in Pau. There was a lot of help offered from the USAC staff and they were always fun to talk to as well. However, I would have enjoyed being able to take classes with French students as well. It is also a shame that the contract between the host families and USAC limited the amount of meals to two each week. I would have preferred to eat with my host family more often. However, I really enjoyed the classes I was in, and I was able to also join a sports club during the semester which was cool and gave me opportunities to make French friends. I am still close to my host family today, as well as other friends who I studied with. Overall, I would recommend the program because it really helps you grow in independence, as well as live in a completely different setting which is a great way to become a global citizen! C'etait vachement cool et je ne regrette jamais mes temps à Pau!

I studied abroad during the Spring 2018 semester. It was single-handedly the best experience that I have had in my college career. I have met many lifelong friends through this program. Pau was the perfect location for me. The program was intense on the language and culture of France and it was great! I receive comments regularly from my French professors here at my current university on how much my French has improved. I feel that the program in Pau is amazing for anyone looking to improve their language skills specifically.

i studied abroad with my best friend and it was absolutely amazing. We ended up in the same classes and it was nice to have someone to help. we lived in the dorms and not in a host family and we liked it because we got to socialize more with the students in our program. I recommend that everyone studies abroad!

I studied abroad in Pau, France which really introduced me to the French culture. I was able to spread French with vendors, shop clerks, and fellow French students. And when I was not able to say something in French everyone was willing to help. When I returned home, I was able to use my French speaking skills to work with Congolese immigrants within my community. I was able to help them adjust to life in the United States just like the French were able to help me adjust to life in France.

First let me say that the staff was helpful in answering my questions before arrival and during my stay. They were friendly and easy to talk to. The program had various excursions that were optional and I attended as many as I could. Doing that allowed me to learn more about the culture and further explore the city. Academically I was supported by a teacher assistant who was available by appointment and sometimes by drop ins. She helped supplement my experience. I was not like most other students in the program who were majoring in French. I was a graduate student studying School Psychology with an interest in developing French language skills. My teachers and the TA were receptive to my questions and helped me when needed. I took the homestay option and my family was great. They were kind to me and gave me lots of freedom. I am very glad I studied abroad this summer! I felt like everything fell into place in a perfect way. My classes, the city, the trips, my homestay family, new friends, and even a new found love. It was exactly what I needed. I would highly recommend this program to others. And the price aint bad either!

I could have not chosen a better place for my first study abroad experience, and first time being in Europe. Pau so quickly captured my heart and still is incredibly special to me. I had not studied French in a couple years, so there was certainly a steep learning curve when I first started the program. However, program assistants and instructors were supportive in know you wanted to learn as well as have an incredible experience in France. Opportunities to practice the language were plentiful- I am so glad I did not go to a bigger city where people would just speak English all the time! I lived in the dorms, but friends with host families had even more growth in language and cultural immersion. My friendships from the summer session were wonderful and have endured- everyone in the program is always eager to connect with one another! This program in Pau had absolutely everything you could hope for or imagine in a study abroad experience. A more suburban area gives a clearer picture of national culture, and the town is perfectly situated in the Basque country, a region with such rich history and particularities. Locals were kind to students and so patient as we stumbled through ordering food or buying things. There was truly something for everyone- nature, shopping, downtown areas, foods of all cuisines, live music, movie festivals, swimming.

My year in Pau was deeply enriching. I participated in the language program, and I now speak French at a high level. The year was diverse with the comforting consistency of the little city in the Pyrenees, familiar and beautiful. The program took us on many adventures, helping us to see more of the country of France and meet French students. I was able to form bonds with locals and with fellow students from around the world all congregating to learn French together. I lived in a studio apartment right by the university- it was all I needed, my cosy place to call home. The staff working in Pau had all the answers, and they were always available to help us in all realms of our experience. The professors, for the most part, had a refreshing, applied approach to teaching the language, and I truly admired a few of them. Pau offered many nice places to walk around, share a meal, and go out to socialize. The group of students who stayed there became very close, but always encouraged one another to reach out to people from other places. Community outreach opportunities were provided to us consistently throughout the year, and I was matched with a Pediatric surgeon who I would meet with to help him practice his English. In return, I gained a friendship and a mentor. I went back to Pau a year later to visit some friends and the USAC staff. It was such a beautiful experience to come back to a familiar place and walk the streets again, giddily feeling like they were my own. Pau was a special experience. Its location allowed for ample travel, but its charm often kept me happy to stay there for the weekend.

My study abroad experience to Pau, France was a life-changing experience. I was very nervous at first, but with the help of the USAC faculty and community, it ended up being an amazing trip. I was very happy that I chose to go with USAC because they help you tremendously throughout the entire experience. The staff that helped me while I was in Pau were Robina, Pauline, and Magali. These three made the experience very comfortable, and it made me feel like I was at home and I could go to someone if I had any questions or concerns. I like how they set up classes so that you are around those that are at the same level of French as you. The teachers I had for both French and Art History were very knowledgeable and friendly. I loved that the students had a lot of say in what we learned in the classes, this led one of my units being about wine! This also gave us the chance to go at our own pace and work on what we needed to work on. The second day I was in Pau, we got on a bus to go downtown. As we were entering the city, I teared up because of the beauty, the historic buildings. This was my first time ever being in Europe or any part of the Old World. The city is a perfect size to meet people and get the true French experience. I loved how much there was to do around Pau. I went on hikes in the Pyrenees, which were breathtaking. I visited Basque country and Saint Jean Pied de Port. I went surfing in Biarritz; I visited Bayonne and San Sebastian. I also had the chance to visit the historic town of La Rochelle, the port city of Bordeaux and of course Paris. Everything I ate while abroad was delicious! I have never had such fresh bread, cheese, baked goods and more. I lived with a host family; I would highly recommend doing this! I loved having the experience of living in a French home and receiving home cooked meals. I stay in touch with my host family to this day and plan to visit in the future. Overall, I was thrilled to have this opportunity! I loved being able to live within the French culture.

My experience with the USAC program was stupendous. USAC was with me every step of the way. My program advisor assisted me in choosing the right program for me and gave me advice to help convince my parents to let me travel abroad. And through the whole application and visa process i received step by step instructions and reminders to help me complete my application. Over there i felt like i always had someone to go to if i had any issues. Many activities were planned for us. Being abroad was life-changing for me and i take all the things i learned over there and try to utilize them in my everyday life. I hoping to go back soon and i am in the process of applying for a job in France.

My experience in Pau was unforgettable. USAC and its faculty catered to all of my needs not only as a student hoping to learn French but also as an American living abroad. Ryan and Robina are the two on-site directors and they worked tirelessly so that every student participating on the program had the opportunity for an amazing experience. During my academic year spent in Pau, I was taught by FLE certified teachers who specialize in teaching French to non-French speakers. This enabled me and the other participants to have a personal connection with the professors and work at a comfortable pace so that no one was too far ahead nor behind. The city itself is beautiful. It is situated in the Southwest corner of the country about 2 and half hours South of Bordeaux and about 2 hours West of Toulouse. In addition to that, it is very close to the Atlantic coast and the Spanish border. Basque Country, beautiful surfing towns, sandy beaches and the Pyrenees mountains are all easily accessible. The city has a population of around 100,000 people so, the night-life is not incredibly vibrant but, it makes up for that by having local bars and clubs in which many French and international students frequent making it easy to meet up with others and become friends. I would highly recommend this program to a student looking for an experience in which they can immerse themselves in the French culture and language in a comfortable environment. I had a great time and learned an immense amount of French culture and language but also about myself.

My friends and I spent an entire day walking along the French countryside in hopes of visiting a nearby grotto. We found the grotto and after going through a tour of it, we walked through tiny French towns all day to get back to Pau. It was beautiful and, though exhausting, helped us see the natural beauties offered by France. I chose to study in Pau because I love French culture, food, and language and I knew that I needed to stay in a smaller city to really get the French experience I was looking for. It is also conveniently located to many other parts of Southern France and Spain. I lived with a host family just off-campus. I had my own bedroom but shared a bathroom with my host brother. My bedroom was quite large and had a wardrobe, a desk, a bookshelf, and a bed. My family was extremely welcoming and helpful. They helped me study for tests, corrected my French homework, and took me out with them on the weekends! When I got sick, my host mom even brought me food and medicine to bed, and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. I could not have asked for a better living situation.

Pau is such a beautiful and cultural town, and it definitely gives off the "small French town" vibes you expect from studying in the South of France. The people were nice, the food was exquisite, and the experience was irreplaceable and unforgettable! Academics: It was definitely a challenging semester but I feel like I really learned a lot about the French language Living Situation: My host family was amazing and it was extremely close to the university and downtown! Program Administration: Ryan and Robina are some of the nicest and most helpful people I know. If there was ever a problem, they were available to help fix it as best they could. Health and Safety: There were some sketchy parts of town, but as long as you walk in groups and mind your belongings, you will be fine. Try to carry pepperspray or a whistle with you just to be on the safe side. Social Life: While there aren't many "nightclubs" there are plenty of bars and places to hang out with your friends during the weekends. Most things close pretty early during the weeks, and the town is basically entirely closed on Sundays.

Pau, France is a great city to study in if you want to learn French. The USAC program is well organized and accommodates to the need of students. The staff is helpful and provides you with tips to living in Pau and cheap and easy ways to travel which is important to all the broke college students who are on a budge. Classes are small and taken with all international students who are learning French. Professors are highly motivated and involved. They do not speak English at all since there are other international students who may not know English so classes are taught in an immersion style. At first you may have difficulty understanding everything but professors are very patient and experienced that they can understand just about anyone's broken French. There are elective that are taught in either English or French to satisfy the needs of students. Government, literature and business courses offered that students can take depending on the availabity and the semester that it is being offered. These courses are limited since the Pau program focuses on the French language acquisition. Though this city is small there are many things to do in Pau. Pau is near the Pyrénées Mountains that are great for hiking trips and camping. There are also many wineries to visit and taste the famous Juracon white wine. Also there are carnivals and events that happen around the city where you can learn about French culture and southern French Basque country. Also Pau has many great restaurants and clubs that students love go to and meet other students.

First of all, study abroad. Secondly, if you're looking for an authentic French experience, it doesn't get much better than this. I had the best host family. I had the best teachers and the best USAC staff helping me the entire time. I met amazing people, who I am still in contact with, and I saw places, sites and art I had only read about. I walked to a local bakery every morning with my host father so we could buy bread for breakfast. I played with the small hedgehogs that were in my host father's garden while he pulled mint for our tea later. I took a bus to school every day and had a 20 minute coffee break every two hours. This place is drenched in culture and history. King Henry IV's castle is a ten minute walk from the university and a two minutes walk from the center of town. There's parks everywhere you look and a French language to be learned. A day didn't go by that I didn't see the USAC staff. They were always there and helpful, plus they're really fun too. The field trips were well organized and so much fun to go on. I did things and went places I would have never done without USAC organizing it and taking us with them. Pau is small, but it's truly great to understand the culture and experience the amazing things the city has to offer. Academics: The classes are so fun and you're actually learning! Living Situation: Host family! Do it! Health and Safety: There's no question about safety in Pau. These are some of the nicest people in France. Social Life: Wherever there's a university, I'm sure you can find some fun nightlife.
