Affectionately known as Valpo and Viña, these two sister cities are located halfway down Chile's endless coastline. The Institute for Study Abroad offers study-abroad opportunities in Santiago, Chile. The program allows students to study at two universities in the city. Students may study either at the Universidad de Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, or the Universidad Diego Portales. The Chilean Universities Program provides students with a wide range of course choices at two universities. Built on the land of two former estates, the city of Viña del Mar, Chile, began in the late 1800s and has become a popular destination for Chileans, Argentines, and other tourists worldwide. Often called the “Garden City,” it is known for its beautiful beaches and its active student population. It is a safe and relaxed city where visiting students can study the Spanish language and Chilean culture with stunning views as a backdrop to their academic and cultural experience. Students appreciate the wonderful Chilean flora and fauna during excursions, including the 120-hectare park called Parque Tricao, trips to some local organic farms, and then a visit to Casablanca Valley.

Spend a semester living and conducting research with Round River in Chilean Patagonia, where we work with local organizations to monitor wildlife and vegetation while exploring the diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to fjords, glaciers, forests, and expansive plains. Students operate out of our base near the remote village of Cochrane and following projects between Aysén Region's protected areas, namely Patagonia National Park. Students become familiar with wildlife monitoring, camera trapping, vegetation sampling, and more as they engage in conservation efforts alongside our local partners. All lectures and field activities are in English. Spanish language skills are not required, but some prior knowledge is recommended. Students should be physically fit and prepared for hiking, backpacking, and inclement weather.

UVM’s fee-paying Academic Semester in English Program allows non-Spanish speakers the opportunity to experience the Latin American and Chilean cultures while earning academic credits in courses taught in English. This program is designed for students enrolled in or interested in one of the following academic areas: General Studies, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Business. Each course has 64 contact hours, which are usually the equivalent of 4 US credits or 5 ECTS according to American and European standards. In addition to these English courses, students are encouraged to take at least one Spanish Language and Chilean Culture class to improve their language skills and learn about their host country. These courses are offered through our in-house Spanish Center, which is accredited by the Cervantes Institute in Spain.

At the School in Chile, students come in at the intermediate-advanced level of Spanish and adhere to the Middlebury Language Pledge® to reap the benefits of linguistic immersion. By living and studying with Chileans and getting involved in the community through volunteer work, internships, and extracurricular activities, they can build authentic relationships and integrate fully into life in their host city. Chile’s largest city, Santiago, offers a pleasant mixture of colonial buildings and parks with the convenience of modern transportation and the look of newer architecture. Santiago has a strong and active cultural life, with the presence of various theaters, museums, and cultural centers. Here, students have the option of studying at three excellent universities: the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Universidad de Chile, or the Universidad Alberto Hurtado.
