Botswana Conservation Program

Spend a semester living, studying, and conducting research with Round River in Botswana's Okavango Delta, home to some of the world's most abundant and diverse wildlife populations. Operating out of 4WD vehicles, the student research crews live in the bush and visit various field sites and communities. For much of the time, local community guides camp with us, giving daily opportunities for cross-cultural exchanges. Students conduct daily game counts with community guides. Afternoons at camp are spent working with the guides on data entry and covering coursework. This will allow you to experience Botswana and learn about conservation in ways the classroom cannot provide. The field-based nature of the program means that if you love the outdoors, seeing wildlife, and camping, and if you want to take part in real conservation projects, then this program is for you.

Outdoor Adventure: Basic Field Guide Training in Botswana

Be part of a unique wilderness experience and gain rare knowledge about nature and the basic skills of a real field guide while surrounded by the unspoiled nature of the famous Okavango Delta! Your classroom – the biggest inland delta in the world – happens to be the perfect place for basic training to become a ranger due to its different ecosystems and impressive wildlife. The course consists of theoretical and practical units in which you gain basic knowledge about ecology, geology, zoology, climate, and weather as well as skills in bush navigation, tracking, and guiding by foot, boat, mokoro, and all-terrain vehicle. Always by your side: experienced guides who teach you all the secrets of flora and fauna and give their expert knowledge during theoretical lessons, regular game walks, and game drives. The course is modular, enabling you to join the course for two or four weeks – at a time or in parts.

Live in the bush, listen and watch very closely, and laugh alot!

I saw, learned, and experianced so much more then I can put in a review. The landsacpe is breathtaking. So many of the people I met were so admirable, and learning from from the community partners, the teachers, and my fellow students felt like drinking from a interdisciplinary firehose! I miss everyone very much. I apreciate how the program is primarily a conservation research organisation; and the actual research is meaningful and empowering. As a student you learn on the job, and take clases during in the afternoons.
