Spanish Study Abroad Programs in Cordoba, Argentina

This is a truly excellent study abroad program, particularly for students interested in an immersive experience. I had struggled to learn Spanish my whole life, even though I started learning in Kindergarten. I just could never get the hang of it. Living in the city of Córdoba, Argentina completely changed this. I saw astronomical improvement in my language skills and my appreciation for Latin American culture. This program gave me the opportunity to live with a wonderful, adoring host mom who was an amazing cook and wonderful, loving face to come home to every day. I got to play field hockey with a club team at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, which honed my language AND social as well as my field hockey skills. The hockey season after I got home was my best in four years. I made lifelong friends through this program, both in Argentina and within my group of American students. Even though we’re all from different states, we’re planning reunions as often as we can. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and to have learned so much. Thank you Spanish Studies Abroad!

This program was absolutely INCREDIBLE. My host family was the best, and there was never a moment that I felt unsafe or uncomfortable. The professors were brilliant and kind, and I loved the courses I took (Latin American literature and Latin American culture). The museums in Córdoba are amazing, as well as the different parks and restaurants. There's an endless amount of things to do - whether it be right after school, night time, or weekends. There are constantly different things to do, places to see, and people to meet. There are also different groups to help English speakers learn Spanish and Spanish speakers learn English - that was a really fun thing to attend. I gained cultural experience, strengthened my Spanish speaking skills, made the best memories, and lifelong friends. All in all, it was the greatest experience and I'd do it again, ten times over!

Cordoba, Argentina is the perfect city to study abroad if you want to better your Spanish and have a real immersion experience. The city is small enough where very few people speak Spanish, and large enough where you never get bored. Spanish Studies Abroad is a good program--if you are looking for challenging academics, that is not the forte of this program--however, you do have the option of taking classes with students at UNC, and that is where the academic rigor kicks in. The regular PECLA classes are structured in a way that you will learn but still have lots of time to travel and enjoy. There is a one-month intensive language course at the beginning that is nice to get you acclimated to the language, and then you choose your other courses after that. While the administration has been shifting hands over the last couple semesters, they are getting the kinks worked out to make it better and better. Even though there are ways Spanish Studies Abroad can improve, I would highly recommend Cordoba and this program.

I had no idea what to expect when I chose to study abroad in Cordoba, Argentina. In reality, I chose the program because it was affiliated with my school (aka I could use my financial aid) and because it wasn't in Spain. As the time to leave for Argentina got closer, of course I got more excited and began to do more research, but in retrospect, I didn't know anything before getting there. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to learn Spanish and speak it confidently. This program did everything it could have to ensure that I could obtain that goal. One of the biggest highlights for me was the Speaking Partners program. Although not everyone had the same experience, I hit it off immediately with my Speaking Partner. She showed me many aspects of the Cordobes lifestyle. We took a belly dance class together, we cooked together, painted, saw live music, walked around the city, and just spent time together, learning about each others' past memories and future goals. She is a lovely, lovely person who taught me so much about the Argentine culture, and we still keep in touch to this day. Also, the assistant to the resident director sent out a weekly email with all of the notable events happening around the city. This was extremely helpful, as it showed us where to go to get the most out of the city. It was efforts like these that really made the difference between falling in love with Argentina and my experience there or feeling completely lonely, lost, and out of place. I anxiously await the next opportunity to visit Argentina and the wonderful people I met there. Academics: I thought that the PECLA classes were much easier than my university courses, but I had also taken many Spanish courses prior to going abroad. Living Situation: I lived with a widowed woman of 65 and her son. We got along really well and we still keep in touch to this day. I know I'll always have a place to visit if/when I go back. Cultural Immersion: Of course, it's not the same as if I had gone independently, without a program, but it was the best it could be for a program of its type. I was also pleasantly surprised at how much Spanish the English-speaking students were willing to speak, even outside of class. Program Administration: I would need an entire book to describe how wonderful and helpful the Cordoba staff was throughout the entire program. They went way above and beyond their job descriptions (or at least, what I imagine are their job descriptions). I felt completely safe and knew that I had support no matter what happened. They also worked to make sure that we knew of local events throughout the city.
