Learning Deeply with Hands-On Experience

September 29, 2025by: Noa Iuchi - JapanProgram: Shark Conservation in Fiji with Projects Abroad

This time in shark conservation in Fiji, I have learned a gained a lot of skills and knowledge by hands-on experience. Most of the times, we had fish identification workshop, coral workshop, shark laboratory seminar at diving center, shark identification workshop, mangrove workshop, etc. Yet, all of these knowledge are being conjugated in the diving afterwards. Learning new contents are important, yet the part that I liked the most is that we got to learn different techniques, planting and restoring mangroves, recording fish species, observation shark type and gender, or surveying coral health, all of them which can only be learnt with physical experience. As a person who wants to become a marine biologist/fish biologist in the future, it was a great experience to learn deeply and bring back actual skills to home.

Shark conservation experience

I had a very good time in Fiji, it was a bit hard for me for the age gap between me and the other volunteers, (I'm 15 and they were at least 18) but apart from that the experience was increible. I got to dive with incredible animals and get to know incredible people such as the other volunteers or the divemasters. I definitely recommend this project although I would try to match the age group if I were you.

Most memorable experience in my life!

Went on this trip with an open mind and gained so much from the experiences I had in Fiji. Fell much more in love with the ocean & marine life learning how to scuba dive, truly a meaningful time volunteering alongside like minded people from all over the world. Friendly and welcoming staff, I had a great time during the project and they are very knowledgeable. Definitely learnt loads about Fijian culture and shark/mangrove conservation scene in Fiji, certainly heart warming to be able to be under their guidance.

The shark research being carried out on the project in Fiji helps ensure that scientists and marine protection lobbyists are provided with regular and consistent scientific data about the life history, reproductive information, movement, and biology of the sharks found in Fijian waters. The Shark Conservation project in Fiji from Projects Abroad allows volunteers to work on pioneering shark protection projects with respected scientists and shark research experts. Volunteers get directly involved in scientific shark research and share data with local and international marine conservation organizations. Previous diving or shark research experience is not required, but volunteers must be able to swim and be medically fit to scuba dive. Diving is a required task on the project.
