Meiji Academy

Right, so I popped over to Meiji Academy in Hokkaido thinking I’d brush up on my Japanese and maybe freeze to death in the snow. Instead, I ended up having an absolutely cracking time. The teachers were brilliant patient, funny, and somehow able to explain grammar without my brain melting like a poorly made soufflé. Couldn't get enough of the Miso Ramen and fun karaoke nights out. The community vibes are up to the roof! Recommend!

The start was a bit disruptive due to a long overlay flight I had from New York, but safely arrived at my amazing sharehouse. The cultural activities especially the workshops in Kendo, Karate and Katana sword practice were an awesome experience. In terms of classes everything was sailing smooth and I can confidently say that after 7 weeks my Japanese significantly improved. All in all the best time to spend a part of my sabbatical year.

This program was very well organized. Meiji’s staff did an outstanding job in assisting all my queries. My homestay was so much fun that I kept in touch with my host family and promised to visit again when I come to Sapporo. The lessons were well prepared and I loved my study pace, which suited me the best. With only four other classmates I felt the small class size combined with a strong focus on speaking practice worked wonders for me. What else can I say besides the activities were abundant and very enjoyable. Make sure you try their “Night Parfait” strolling event. Attention! Gaining weight is guaranteed in Hokkaido with all the yummy delights, not an exception!!!
