What inspired you to travel abroad?
I have always been fascinated by Japanese culture, language, and the unique way of life in Japan. I wanted to improve my Japanese skills in an immersive environment, meet people from around the world, and challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone.
Fukuoka seemed like the perfect place to do this.
Why did you choose Meiji Academy?
I chose Meiji Academy because of the small class sizes and the personal, flexible approach they offer. I liked that they not only focus on language learning but also provide cultural experiences like trips, festivals, and hands-on activities.
The reviews were great, and Fukuoka seemed like a welcoming city for learners.

What was your favorite part about Fukuoka?
My favorite part of Fukuoka was how friendly the people were and how it offers a perfect blend of modern city life and traditional culture.
I loved visiting the shrines, trying out new dishes at the local markets, and exploring unique places like the underground shopping street with every shop you can possibly need.
What made your experience abroad extraordinary?
The mix of language learning and cultural immersion made my experience special. Wearing a kimono in Fukuoka, visiting a shrine, and the trip to Yanagawa were unforgettable.
The supportive staff, the friendly community at the shared house, and the freedom to explore the city made everything so enjoyable.
How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?
The staff at Meiji Academy were amazing. They helped us with everything—where to shop, where to eat, and what to do in Fukuoka.
They always checked in to see how we were doing and helped us improve our language skills. Their tips and recommendations helped make the city feel like home.
Other interns also showed us places that they frequent in their free time.
What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?
I wish I had explored more local events and festivals during my stay. Fukuoka has so many cultural happenings, and while I did a lot, I feel like I missed out on some unique seasonal activities.
I would also have liked to interact more with locals outside of the school setting. I was a bit unlucky and got sick, but the medical services in Japan are some of the best in the world, in my opinion.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.
A typical day started with Japanese classes at Meiji Academy in the morning. After classes, we often explored Fukuoka’s shops, cafés, or sights together.
Sometimes, we joined school-organized events like shrine visits or cultural workshops. In the evenings, I would relax at the shared house or practice Japanese with friends.
What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?
I loved walking around Fukuoka, trying new foods like ramen and takoyaki, visiting temples, and going to local markets. I also enjoyed going to the beach or hiking in the nearby mountains. There were so many places to explore, like Ohori Park or the Fukuoka Tower. Even simple things like shopping felt like an adventure.
What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?
I stayed in a shared house, which was a great experience. It was comfortable, clean, and located in a quiet area not far from the school.
I loved that I could meet other students from different backgrounds. It felt like a little community, and it was nice to share stories and tips with my housemates.
What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?
Future participants should know that Meiji Academy is very flexible, but you have to be proactive!
If you want to make the most of your stay, join the events, talk to the staff, and explore the city. The program gives you the tools, but you shape your own experience—get involved!
And you should never forget the finances, so take more money with you just to be on the safe side.

It pushes you to grow personally and professionally. You make lifelong friends and memories, and you return home with skills and experiences that shape your future.
