I just loved the art community and vibe in Oaxaca!!! The students loved it too The family we stayed with was extremely warm and were interested in our lives and how we were enjoying our stay. The cultural trips were fantastic. I especially loved working on the "grabados" and the visit to the Hierve del agua.

Amazing Adventure with Arcos Abroad in Costa Rica!
April 23, 2026by: Julie Gutierrez - United StatesWe were thrilled with the Arcos Costa Rica trip for our son! It was his first trip abroad without us and he had a wonderful experience! The itinerary was full of exciting excursions and cultural activities and he really enjoyed his homestay. We'd highly recommend the program and can't wait for him to go on new adventures with Arcos for his last two years of high school!
Well worth the trip for students and teachers
April 10, 2026by: Karen Nichols - United StatesI've traveled with school groups to Oaxaca, Mexico and to Granada, Spain. In both cases, the programs delivered what we expected and more. These are unique programs because of their small scale and personal touch. They balance Spanish language instruction (which is notably very good), cultural experiences and home stay time. Any small glitch or need is addressed quickly and effectively. Special attention is paid to details such as celebrating student birthdays. The staff are accommodating, flexible, kind and professional. Our school chose to travel with Arcos again this year -- this time to Costa Rica.

My daughter had an amazing experience, and the host family was perfectly matched! She learned a tremendous amount, from becoming more fluent in Spanish to navigating travel independently. Most importantly, she gained a deeper understanding of how people live outside the US and how much this world has to offer if you simply "jump in." Have faith in your children and let them go!

A wonderful learning experience
December 03, 2025by: Hannah MerrimanProgram: Camino de Santiago: Hiking the Way in Galicia, Spain
The Arcos director Helder was wonderful! We met him at the airport. The kids pushed themselves on the Camino de Santiago hike and felt a great sense of accomplishment and camaraderie when it was complete. It was their first time in Europe so that added a lot of learning. They felt a sense of community with the other walkers, and bonded with the small group. Trust your kids, let them have an experience.

Robust program

Arcos provides a robust program with a great diversity of experiences. I think the best aspects for my child were the ability to feel independent as a traveler in another country, the opportunity to connect and bond with the host family, the chance to explore and enhance her language skills (through classes and just being out in the community), and the array of cultural experiences. Definitely read all the materials sent before the trip! The packing list was especially helpful. My daughter's host family was absolutely wonderful. Top notch
October 25, 2025by: Margaret PearsonArcos offers great programs for independent and culturally adventurous teens. We love these trips because they give your child more independence. I also like that it's a true cultural experience and not overly "high end", the teens are not coddled or given tons of special treatment. The activities were appropriate and fun and the Spanish lessons were top notch

Daughter made so many friends
August 29, 2024by: Pamela BeasleyProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
If your child is even slightly interested in an experience like this, encourage them to do it. My 17 year old twin daughters were extremely apprehensive about going once we had made the arrangements. They were worried about being homesick, living in a stranger's home, and generally about being overseas by themselves. On the day that they arrived in Granada, one of my daughters was feeling very sad and homesick and told the host mother with whom they were staying that she missed her mom. The host mother gave her a hug and said "I'm your Spanish mom." One week later, the same daughter who had been so homesick said to me "Mom, I don't know HOW I am going to leave my host mom...I just LOVE her!!!" and "Mom, I've made so many friends here, it will be so sad to say goodbye."

Go for it!! : ) Overall, everything was great! My daughter had a super good time, loved creating her own life within the program in Granada. She met some great kids through the program and enjoyed the fact that sometimes she was with just the kids in the immersion program and at other times she overlapped with kids who were registered for other Arcos programs (art, outdoor adventure, etc).
Grateful for the support

August 12, 2024by: Will ItskovichArcos staff was overall very responsible and fun. I loved my host mom! I got to have the most helpful Spanish class I’ve ever taken in my life. My advice is to make an effort! Speak Spanish as much as you can to get the most out of the program. It will work!
11 out of 10!
August 12, 2024by: Michael HamiltonEverything about the home stay was great including the conversations, the meals, and the room itself. The best thing and greatest benefit was learning Spanish. Everything was so great that that I would give a 11 out of 10 if I could. Excellent choice for summer in Argentina!
Oaxaca Mexico study abroad
August 11, 2024by: Lelah Miller - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
Throughout my entire study abroad program from before departure and after I had a amazing time. The culture in Oaxaca and the food was all amazing and having a host family made it so we were more enriched into there lives which I really liked. Overall I had an amazing time during my study abroad in Oaxaca Mexico.
Interesting and fun learning opportunity
August 10, 2024by: Caleb Shepherd - United StatesMy 16 year old daughter went on this program. It was excellently run and managed. This was her first solo international travel experience, and we all felt some initial trepidation. However, all the staff and individuals involved in the program were extremely knowledgeable, supportive, and welcoming. This created an excellent experience and learning opportunity for my daughter; who came back with a renewed confidence and increased appreciation of the greater world around her.
Great experience
August 09, 2024by: Cinthia Kettering - United StatesTo study abroad for my kids was a great experience. They learn a new culture, try new food and practiced a new language. With Arcos Journey my kids have been in Costa Rica, Argentina and Spain. Both kids loved the whole program.
Study Abroad in Granada
August 09, 2024by: Grace Heller - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
While the experience was overall amazing and I loved the cultural experience of the homestay and learned a lot from the classes, I found that the level of cultural activities was not exactly as I had hoped. The great majority of my time did not have planned activities and due to the fact that I was not allowed to use public transportation, the lack of activities to do was limiting. When we did have planned activities, they were different than I had hoped, much less elaborate and exciting than the program had advertised. Additionally, due to us having a very early curfew of 12 on weekends and 11 on weekdays (when our dinners typically started at 9 or 10 as a part of traditional Spanish culture), we did not have a significant amount of time to explore Granada at night, which was not desirable. Our program director was short with us when we explained that our program materials said our curfew was 12 on weekends, and she claimed that that was not true and that though we agreed to a 12 pm curfew, we had to accept that it was 11 every day, leaving us frustrated. Fortunately, she did eventually clarify the curfew, ensuring that it was 12. As far as the classes, I had not expected to be separated from the rest of the students in my program when at school (we were all placed in different classes), or to have to catch up on the material already learned by the other students in the preceding two weeks. However, the classes were very educational and the professors were great! Our experience with transportation and assistance was excellent when my flight arrived in Madrid and the program ensured that I was safe and made the succeeding flight. When my suitcase was lost in between connecting flights, I received the assistance I needed and the suitcase was returned in a timely manner. The director eased my fears and was patient, which was very appreciated. Throughout the program, our director assisted us in any difficulties or concerns. Going into the program with a lot of anxiety about the homestay, it ended up being the best part!! Our homestay was WONDERFUL, with traditional food, a caring “Spanish mom”, and a safe and welcoming place to relax and sleep. I seriously do not think that I could have had a better host in any way. She was funny, welcoming, understanding, and made it feel like home. By the end of the two weeks my roommates and I adored our host and hope to stay in contact. She treated us like her children and was very caring. There was no point in the program where I was worried for my safety. The teachers and students at the university were very welcoming and helpful, and I specifically enjoyed the Flamenco dance class and the trip to the Nerja beach. The city of Granada was very safe, clean, and abundant in young individuals, making it a great place to study abroad. I had an overall positive experience, with the only recommendation being to have more activities that are not just walking around, and to have the activities take up more time so that the students do not need to mostly plan their own. I think that two weeks was a perfect amount of time and that even if a child is typically anxious about travel, this is a great program and place to study due to the safety, welcoming environment, and top notch assistance.
Different than advertised but still a Great way to spend time with Americans overseas
August 09, 2024by: S J - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
My 17 year old spent 3 weeks in Oaxaca with Arcos Journeys. Overall, he enjoyed the experience and would do it again, but it was different than advertised. He stayed in a house with an older woman and 7 other American students. This was less of a homestay and more of a nice hostel. The 4 boys ate together and the 4 girls ate together (they did not interact, as they were in 2 different programs), with no other Spanish speakers at the table. The boys spent a lot of time together and became good friends. The morning Spanish class was good, but there was no afternoon class (the session was supposed to have an afternoon class as well as a morning one). The kids repeated several cultural activities once the next group arrived, meaning they did printmaking twice, hot cocoa tasting twice, etc. my son was well cared for and safe. I had thought he would have more of an authentic time with a Mexican family, but he enjoyed spending time with the other Ameticans.
Thank you so much for sharing comments about your son’s experience. I will address the comments shared below. Spanish Classes: Spanish classes are always weekdays in the mornings so that we have afternoons after lunch for the cultural activities. Having classes both mornings and afternoons would be too overwhelming for students. We do not advertise or offer morning and afternoon Spanish classes. That is not the program design for any of our Spanish Immersion programs. We are unsure what would have led to that misunderstanding but appreciate you mentioning it so we can make that as clear as possible for others. Cultural Activities: For the Summer I Oaxaca program we offer the option to arrive early for 3 weeks or arrive one week later for 2 weeks. The activities that were repeated, so to speak, were that each group got a city tour after they arrived which included trying a traditional drink. This summer we decided to repeat the printmaking workshop for the 3 week students (when the 2 week students arrived) as we have found it to be an activity that students enjoy and find interactive. However, this is good feedback and next summer we could do a pottery or ceramics workshop for the 3 week students their first week so they are not going to printmaking twice. Homestay: That is great that the boys became good friends! We love hearing about those connections that happen on the program. Your son was staying with Cristina, who lives in a very beautiful and big home by herself and the maid. She recently built two bungalows in her garden to host students during the peak summer season, when she can host students from other programs that sometimes overlap for a few days with the Arcos program. This particular host mom really enjoys having students, taking them for hikes, walks, to the gym, etc. extra activities, like concerts, movies, etc. she is very active and energetic! We like to place high school students there because of the safety of the area and because of the amount of time she likes to share with them instead of just preparing the meals.
Planting trees was a lot of fun!
August 06, 2024by: Sophia MozaffarianI LOVED OUR HOMESTAY MOM. HER FOOD WAS AMAZING! My Arcos director was very sweet and knew what she was talking about. She was helpful and fun during the whole trip. Planting trees was a lot of fun! I enjoyed the experience! The hardest part was saying goodbye to the wonderful people I met.
So much fun doing community service
August 06, 2024by: Kiley OrtizMy homestay was so amazing, the family was so sweet. Apart from my worries that I didn't speak enough Spanish (which wasn’t really much of a problem) everything went smoothly while I was there. This trip is something I will never forget. I had so much fun completing all of the community service and I felt good doing all of it!
Just what I needed
August 06, 2024by: Hailey PluteI LOVE MY HOST MOM! SHE'S AMAZING! I highly recommend the homestay because you get to live with a family, absorb the culture, and learn Spanish in a natural setting. The trip overall was really good and I feel like it was a good restart that I needed in my life.

Put yourself out there and have fun
August 06, 2024by: Amelia DriverI really liked our Spanish classes, and that our teachers spoke very slow. Because my teacher didn’t speak much English it really challenged me. I liked when we interacted with people at the market too. I loved my most mom and dad. They were so cute and absolutely hilarious. They always made an effort to talk to us and make conversation which really stretched my Spanish skills. The house was clean and the meals were delicious. I learned that people will appreciate you even if you just try your best to speak the language.
I learned much more than I ever expected!
July 29, 2024by: Ana NegreteProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
My program director was super friendly and I felt like I could talk to her about anything. She understood everything we were feeling and shared some of her own personal stories which was very insightful! The greatest benefit was getting to learn a different perspective of life. It is super important to be culturally aware, and to understand that people can live different lives than you do and will endure different struggles. You can never truly understand the experience until you have it for yourself.
Great program to stretch your wings with

July 29, 2024by: Charles-Anthony MitchellThe greatest benefit was interacting on an almost fulltime basis in Spanish. I really enjoyed the amazing food and learning how to convert money. Use Arcos for your children if you are able. It was a great experience in which my child gained independence and learned about the culture of a different country. We were super impressed as a family with the communication, information and instructions provided by Arcos and the team. The activities available were also engaging for my child.
Stay longer if possible
December 29, 2023by: Melissa MacdonaldProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
While on his Arcos summer program in Granada, Spain our son improved his Spanish, had a meaningful cross-cultural experience, and had a good experience with his host family. I suggest that you have your child go for one month versus two weeks, if possible.
Everything was great!
December 29, 2023by: Cristina LindbladI'm so pleased with how my son's program turned out that I really can't think of anything that needs improvement. In addition to gaining greater Spanish proficiency, I was happy that he felt comfortable enough to begin exploring Buenos Aires with his new friends from Arcos. I will happily make myself available to parents of prospective students. Prior to my son's program, Arcos helped connect me with the parents of two former students and that really helped seal the deal for our family. I'm happy to pay it forward!
Wonderful program for your teen
December 28, 2023by: Carley HughesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
This experience really opened my daughter's eyes to different ways of life. She truly got exposure to the history and current culture of Oaxaca. The immersive inclusion in the day to day and historical culture of Oaxaca made the trip such a unique experience. The program had just the right amount of structure and an amazing on-location program director. She went out of her way to really show the group the area and the culture. It is a wonderful program for your teen!
A perfect first experience abroad!
December 27, 2023by: Sheila SullivanProgram: Camino de Santiago: Hiking the Way in Galicia, Spain
Arcos gives your child just the right amount of challenge and support for a first experience traveling abroad. They set the stage for our son to be excited to do more traveling and learning abroad in the future! Be sure to encourage your child to train for all the walking using the shoes they plan to wear. Encourage them to meet people beyond their group-mates, as there are pilgrims on the Camino from all over the world.
My child grew tremendously
December 26, 2023by: Kim HarvillProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
My child grew tremendously from being independent and having the freedom to explore on her own. Your child will return home with a deeper understanding and appreciation for what we have here in the US. On top of that, they learn to appreciate other cultures and expand their worldview.
Language learning, independence & culture
December 26, 2023by: Anya LawlerAfter completing his program with Arcos, my son came back with greatly improved Spanish skills, independence and confidence, and an expanded appreciation for other cultures and customs. We were very happy with the program. Communication from Arcos was excellent, so much so that I never even felt the need to call anyone to ask questions because it was all well-covered in the emails they sent us. I highly recommend that you read all of the materials and then trust that Arcos has it covered! I appreciated the Google calendar that Arcos shared with us ahead of time, so I always knew what my teen was up to. I also appreciated Arcos sending us a shared Google folder with photos of the activities and excursions since my teen would never think to send me any. All in all it was a great experience! My son had nothing but good things to say about his time in Argentina. We will definitely use Arcos again with our younger child.
Great opportunity to build cultural relationships
December 25, 2023by: Laura HovindProgram: Rainforest, Beach, & Cultural Immersion in La Fortuna
The most valuable aspects of the program were developing personal relationships with the homestay family and gaining independence and self-confidence through international travel without parents. This is a very active trip. The less I heard from my child the more I knew she was getting the full benefit of the experience. I heard wonderful feedback about the host family and the chocolate tour, horseback riding and surfing excursion. My daughter will continue to communicate with her Costa Rican family members. Creating these new relationships was her favorite part of the trip. This program was an amazing experience that met our expectations and was an excellent introduction to international travel.
Absolutely amazing experience
December 25, 2023by: Jason StellOur child had an absolutely amazing experience and came back ready to sign on for another program with Arcos. The summer program in Argentina was a respite from summer heat in the United States. The staff were incredible and always responded quickly to anything we needed. My recommendation is to make the most of the opportunities!
Fun and accessible!
December 23, 2023by: Robyn BurchfielIt was great for my child to have the opportunity to live with a family who spoke only Spanish and getting to experience what it’s like to live in a smaller, rural town. Make sure you have WhatsApp downloaded before your child leaves and consider setting up a specific group chat for the immediate family. I appreciated being able to talk to the owner of Arcos and then with one of the staff. They answered our questions and were easily accessible.
Community service & fun!
December 23, 2023by: Kelly CroninMy daughter gained more independence and confidence. She regained some of her fluency in Spanish and earned community service hours through valuable experiences helping others. Teens enjoy the combination of service and fun and it’s a win-win to do both on a trip to another country. She had a great experience in Costa Rica with Arcos!
Do it!
December 21, 2023by: Katie WeissMy daughter did the Arcos Oaxaca program. It helped her to grow in the areas of independence, language skills, fearlessness, love of cultures, and respect. DO IT! It was amazing. SHE LOVED IT. So much so that I already signed her up for next summer with Arcos in Spain!
Fantastic experience for high schoolers!
December 21, 2023by: Allison JuvesFANTASTIC experience for any high schooler! My son had the most amazing time living with a lovely family and having so many dynamic and educational experiences with his fellow program participants! I think in addition to the pure fun he had learning how to salsa dance, make tortillas, surf and explore the rainforest, he appreciated the community service they did at local schools and also loved getting to interact with the locals in the plaza most evenings, speaking Spanish and immersing himself in the culture of Atenas and Costa Rica. Definitely do not miss the opportunity to engage with the local community - lovely people and amazing cultural exchange.
Far more affordable than other programs
December 16, 2023by: Amanda TurnerProgram: Camino de Santiago: Hiking the Way in Galicia, Spain
My daughter came out of the Camino de Santiago with a sense of accomplishment and a boost in confidence! Encourage your child to train ahead of time, which will make their hike that much more enjoyable. That was a key part of my daughter having a positive experience. We are very happy with Arcos and will definitely look into future programs with them. Far more affordable than many other travel programs for teens out there!
Gained interpersonal and cross-cultural skills
December 15, 2023by: Catalina OrtizMy son came back from his summer program in Argentina speaking much better Spanish. He also gained important interpersonal and cross-cultural skills. Make sure your child is prepared for the climate and understands the importance of having the right clothing for cooler temperatures.
Very professional program
December 14, 2023by: Suzanne PittockProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
My daughter was blessed to be able to experience the rich culture of Oaxaca. She got to further her language skills, gain independence, and she really rose to the occasion in terms of getting the most out of her host family experience, which she absolutely loved. My daughter was really happy with her homestay family. We were nervous at first but Arcos was so helpful along the way with questions. Their program is very professional and I felt that my daughter was very well taken care of. The cultural daily activities were great, a nice variety in town and out of town.
New skills and wonderful memories!
December 13, 2023by: Tracy RossMy child gained independence, confidence, new skills, new friendships, and wonderful memories. Encourage your child to go in with an open mind and be ready for an unforgettable experience. There may be some culture shock or emotions, but remember that every day is a new day, and the uncomfortable and new builds character and makes us stronger people. We highly recommend Arcos and always felt our daughter was in the right hands. From first communications, to last, and all of our daughters' positive experiences and happy phone calls, we are so happy she traveled with Arcos! Our daughter had such a positive experience. There is nothing she would change with the activities as she loved them all.
Fabulous experience!
December 10, 2023by: Gabrielle CodyProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
My daughter was completely ecstatic about the whole trip! She had so many amazing experiences including dancing, cooking, and touring archeological sites. It is a fabulous experience. She got a wonderful sense of how a real Mexican family lives thanks to her host family. So many beautiful experiences with food, seeing how chocolate is made, seeing how natural textile dyes are made, going to a university to learn Spanish, and seeing all the incredible indigenous history.
Accomodating and unique connections
December 10, 2023by: Karin TaifourThe best part of the program is the connection that is forged with the host family as well as other program participants. I recommend that you sign up earlier to get better timed flights. We didn't have any choice by the time we signed up late in the game and thankfully everyone at Arcos was understanding of my son's late night/early morning flights.
Embrace the culture
December 10, 2023by: Stacie BrightMy daughter gained Independence and confidence by having the opportunity to live in another culture and with people from different backgrounds. I suggest that you encourage your child to spend as much time with the host family as they can and embrace their home and ways of living. Glad my daughter did two programs!
Ancient cultural knowledge & personal growth
December 07, 2023by: Jeff RogersProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
My daughter gained self-confidence by living abroad, made new friendships, grew resilience, and learned ancient cultural knowledge. My advice is to work on gaining an understanding about the cultural differences between the United States and Mexico (daily life, schedules, etc).
Book as soon as possible!
December 05, 2023by: Tanja HeadfordProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
My son said he would have liked to stay another week! That just shows how much he enjoyed it, even though he had to study Spanish every morning. The homestay family was perfect! My son was treated as if he was part of the family. I recommend that you book now or as soon as possible because the summer programs often fill early.

Exceptional program

Overall, the arts program was exceptional.

Incredible adventure with incredible people
August 14, 2023by: Charlie Watt - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
This program is so fun and 100% worth it. Everything is taken care of by the program and, as a 17 year old traveling transatlantically alone, they made the entire experience of getting there and leaving really easy and not stressful. Everyone (ESPECIALLY Rocio and Marcell) is super nice and eager to help or answer any questions someone has. It’s really nice to have two great, educated, unique people to show you around a city filled to the brim with history.
Enjoy where you are and soak it in!
August 06, 2023by: Savannah YostProgram: Camino de Santiago: Hiking the Way in Galicia, Spain
Come with an open mind to a new country, remember to enjoy where you are and soak it in. It is not a race! My Arcos director was amazing! I loved her expertise in Spanish culture and specifically the area in Galicia. She was available 24/7 for whatever the group needed and made sure everyone was included and felt up to the challenges each day. She made sure everyone was fit and well to keep going on our trek. I would follow her again in a heartbeat! My advice is to pack light and practice trekking over long distances. I highly recommend to put your phones down at the table during meals so you can get to know your fellow travelers. We did this with our group and I am so glad we did because we laughed with the company we had and really got to know each other.

I loved all of it!
July 29, 2023by: Charlie WattProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
I loved all of it and thought it was just the right level for me. I love how Arcos places students in the right Spanish level with the short verbal assessment they do. I also loved my Spanish professor. She was my favorite Spanish teacher I’ve ever had and is such a genuinely good teacher. She is truly invested in what she does and interested in the students she teaches. My host family was so nice and accommodating. I enjoyed the experience of going to Europe, learning more Spanish, meeting new people - everything!

Incredible experience
July 29, 2023by: Ashley HeOur Arcos directors always communicated clearly and effectively and responded quickly whenever we had any concerns or questions. I felt very comfortable in my homestay. My host mom always cleaned whenever my roommate and I had activities outside, allowing us to come back to a clean stack of laundry and freshly swept floor. Her cooking was incredible and she always asked if we needed any adjustments. Whenever my roommate and I had plans, she was always very flexible and there to help. My advice is this: rather than packing many sets of clothing, just pack a few that you can wash and re-wear. This allows for packing much lighter. Make sure the clothes are quick dry. Have fun!
Rewarding and fun
July 29, 2023by: Isabel RossThe community service was very rewarding and fun, especially because there were multiple different projects we worked on. My Arcos director was so much fun to be with! I learned so much about Mexican culture and the Spanish language in Oaxaca. My Arcos director was excellent with everything - so enthusiastic! I already miss her very much. Everyone who has her is very lucky. I would 100% recommend this program to future students.
I had so much fun!
May 29, 2023by: Dasha BorodovskayaProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
My Arcos director was great and super helpful. Loved her! My Spanish professor at the Oaxaca University (UABJO) was also great. I had so much fun in my Oaxacan homestay! I vouch for this program and recommend it to other students for its enriching experiences.
Absolutely recommend!
May 29, 2023by: Amha FekadeProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
As a participant in the Oaxaca, Mexico program with my high school, I was immersed in the Spanish Language and Mexican culture through Spanish classes at the university, culturaI activities, and excursions. I would absolutely recommend this program to others.
Wonderful memories and new appreciation!
May 29, 2023by: Michael ClayProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
I did the Spanish Language and Mexican Culture program in Oaxaca, Mexico with my high school. I brought home wonderful memories and the appreciation of experiencing a new culture. I would for sure recommend this program to other high school students.
Learned a lot of Spanish and cultural history!
April 25, 2023by: Grace BonowProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
Our Arcos director was very kind, nice, and knowledgeable about the area. She was flexible when needed and eager to help us enjoy Granada. She seemed genuinely happy to be our guide and share her city with us. She was approachable and we learned a lot from her. I learned a lot in class during the academic portion of the program.
Amazing memories for life!
April 25, 2023by: Jaya ReardonProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
Amazing memories for life! Bring your mini cuaderno (notebook) because you are going to have a lot more vocabulary in Spanish to write throughout the trip! At first I thought that understanding and communicating in Spanish with the locals who have a strong accent would be really hard, but the more I practiced, the better I got.
Experiencing a new culture
April 25, 2023by: Willa SydorProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
I was grateful to have experienced a new culture in Granada, Spain. My Arcos director was super nice and helpful. My advice to anyone doing this program is to explore the city, have fun, and don't be afraid to talk to people in Spanish! Don't be afraid of the language barrier - it gets easier the more you practice!
Beautiful places and immersive learning
April 25, 2023by: Meleana HooperProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
My host parents were very kind and took good care of us. Be prepared to walk a lot! I appreciated getting to experience a different culture, seeing beautiful places, and learning history in an immersive way. I'm so glad I chose Arcos and I highly recommend their programs!
New culture and improved Spanish
April 25, 2023by: Forrest ScearceProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
I really appreciated living and seeing an entirely new culture in Spain. I was able to significantly improve my Spanish speaking abilities. My advice is to take a lot of pictures! Without a doubt, this program is one I would strongly recommend to study abroad with.
Live in the moment and embrace the experience!
April 25, 2023by: Annika JohnsonProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
Arcos did a fantastic job! Classes, excursions and cultural activities were very informative. Academically, our Spanish teacher was amazing and made learning a very enjoyable experience. My greatest advice is to live in the moment and embrace each experience!
10 out of 10
April 25, 2023by: Kaya CliffordProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
I give the Arcos Spanish Language and Culture program in Granada, Spain a 10 out of 10. For those who are thinking about going abroad, living with a host family, and studying Spanish, I highly recommend this program for its academic and cultural benefits.
Strongly recommend
April 25, 2023by: Carson CramerProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
My homestay was really nice. Make the most of your free time - Granada is a great city for walking and exploring on foot. I benefited from Spanish improvement and expanded cultural knowledge. I strongly recommend Arcos for your study abroad adventure!
The homestay was the best
April 16, 2023by: Tanya RamosProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
Our homestay was the best! My host mom cooked the food exactly as we wanted and was always checking in to see what we needed. She was really great about providing us with recommendations of things to do throughout the city. My advice is to keep an open mind and try not to compare your own culture to Mexican culture too much as it can be very different. Through this experience I realized how much we take for granted, especially things as basic and as important as water.
Immersion into another culture and way of life
April 16, 2023by: Joseph MarinucciProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
Even though I only speak a little Spanish, I was always supported by everyone around me and I never felt like I was unsafe or misunderstood. I loved learning about the history long before our time. It was very interesting and always had me wanting to ask questions. I strongly recommend Arcos if you want to have an immersive experience abroad.
Worth it!
April 16, 2023by: Bryan Pani-CuautleProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
I did the Spanish Language and Mexican Culture program through Arcos with my high school. I grew from learning about the different cultures and languages spoken in Oaxaca. My advice is to not be scared to try new things! I would absolutely recommend this program to future students - it's worth it!
Organized and well-thought-out
March 13, 2023by: Siena SolisProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
The Arcos program is really organized and well-thought-out logistically. Our Arcos director was extremely friendly and enjoyable to be around. I enjoyed all the meals with my host family! Our host mom took into account the things I liked and did not like. The house was very neat and organized. I loved getting to try doing new things. I enjoyed the dance lesson a lot more than I thought I would because I usually don’t like dancing but I’m so glad I tried it. I’m also not an artistic person but the printmaking class was a great joy for me too.
Extraordinary!
March 13, 2023by: Harper HorwitzProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
The Arcos directors were very interactive with the group, and overall just very fun to have as our guides around the city. They genuinely care about everyone in the group. They also introduced us to some great Spanish music. The classes were very informative, and I liked the out of class activities. For example, one day we went to a nearby park and talked to local people. That was probably my favorite part of the whole class. I enjoyed getting to go out and talking to people in Spanish. It was a blessing to get to stay with my host mom! She was so kind and warm. She made us delicious meals fresh every day. It was very fun talking to her at mealtimes and throughout the day. She was available if we ever needed anything, but also never intruded on our privacy. I'm very grateful that I got to stay with her! I was also very excited that we got free time to explore some of the city on our own. Without hesitation, I recommend this program to all future students.
Great way to connect with local culture and people
March 13, 2023by: Karen NicholsProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
In Spanish classes, we appreciated that students were engaged in more involved conversations about the local culture and people. They liked the Spanish language games, too. The language institute teachers put on a very nice party for the students at the end of the program. It was very thoughtful. My advice is to really look at and follow the packing list provided by Arcos.
I learned a lot!
March 13, 2023by: Matilda PerksProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
I learned a lot! My Oaxacan host mom was really nice - very warm and welcoming! I am grateful to have learned so much about Mexican culture and history. My Spanish also greatly improved. For those thinking about going abroad to Mexico, I highly recommend this program for Spanish and Cultural immersion.
My director was amazing!
March 13, 2023by: Willa Sio-CodyProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
As a student, I highly recommend the Spanish Language and Mexican Culture Program based in Oaxaca. This program combines Spanish classes at the university with cultural activities and excursions led by Arcos staff. My Arcos director was amazing. She was always so helpful and kind.
Really amazing!
March 13, 2023by: Trevor BrooksProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
The Arcos directors are incredibly kind, helpful, constantly making the extra effort to make our experience great! When I lost my hat on a class trip, my director went back later to bring it back for me - really amazing. My advice is to speak Spanish as much as possible!
My son had a wonderful experience!
January 05, 2023by: Maria Orozco - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
The staff was excellent in communicating. They were punctual and respectful. My son was immersed in the culture. His mentor provided detailed information about the cultures and a first hand experience of a new cultural perspective. He returned to the United States with a broader perspective.
Wonderful trip
January 01, 2023by: Julia Tsiridis - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
It was a very fun experience and my host family was wonderful. I got a lot more confident speaking Spanish due to this experience. I felt safe exploring the city and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks for an outstanding visit to Mexico.
I had the best adventure!
December 31, 2022by: Olivia Ortiz - United StatesProgram: Camino de Santiago: Hiking the Way in Galicia, Spain
Everyday I learned so much about Spanish culture and architecture as we visited many cathedrals and other beautiful sights. I had amazing food and met some nice people as well. It was a great combination of hiking, exploring, and socializing!
Great experience!
December 31, 2022by: Erin Portman - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
My son had a great time on his Arcos adventure to Oaxaca. It was fun for him to meet kids from all over who have the same interest in learning Spanish. Plus, they went on some great local adventures. Highly recommend!
An incredible experience
December 31, 2022by: Layne Griffin - United StatesI had a great time getting to live with my host family and my Spanish really improved. I loved how we had time to explore on our own, but also had structured cultural time. School was fun and the activities were engaging.
I had rewarding and challenging time!
December 31, 2022by: Eli Berry - United StatesI went to Oaxaca for the 4 week program. I did some traveling before and after so it ended up being about a 6 week experience. The program itself was awesome. We had awesome host families who were super kind and welcoming. Our directors were very nice and down to earth, and the city (our campus) was so beautiful and filled with culture and history. Our program did a great job of exposing us to all of it. My favorite part was the “culinary” program I was in. It was the first group that had ever done it and it was by far my favorite part. We would go on little field trips every day to restaurants, peoples homes, new villages, markets. So many cool places. Each place we would make a dish or few and then eat them! The hardest part for me was the social view of it. I didn’t click with really anyone in my program. I felt myself being more drawn to our directors then the students. I was the oldest in the group which played into it but if I would do it again I would have probably waited to turn 18 so that I could have gone with the older group.
A trip to remember!
December 30, 2022by: Hailey Blum - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
Studying abroad this summer with arcos was an amazing decision. My month abroad was filled with new experiences, supportive staff, and amazing learning opportunities. I am forever grateful for the time I spent in Spain through arcos and would do it a million more times if I could.
Best summer!
December 30, 2022by: Alex Tev - US Virgin IslandsI really enjoyed spending half of my summer in Argentina. 2 weeks was in Buenos Aires, learning about the culture and the Spanish language the other 2 weeks was sking and snowboarding in Bariloche. The food was amazing, excursions were super fun, and the people were welcoming. I also enjoyed my host family. Great experience!
Best Spanish culture. Fun-Ski
December 30, 2022by: Adri L - United StatesThe program was fantastic. I have learned a great deal about Argentina, its culture and people. I have also improved my Spanish; had amazing time skiing, and met many great people, some if which I stay in contact with.

Great trip
December 29, 2022by: Sevien Schulhoff - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
Very fun trip that improved my Spanish. I met lots of people and really got the experience of what it is like to live in another country. Would definitely recommend to anyone that's going to be an upperclassman.
Bariloche is incredible!
December 28, 2022by: Jasper Skidmore - United StatesWe had a great time! Good group, good skiing, good food and love Argentina . The house and place we stayed was cool. Two weeks wasn’t long enough but if you add the immersion Spanish it’s good . We had skiers of all levels . Kevin was super cool and fun

Would 100% recommend!
December 28, 2022by: Emma Markwardt - United StatesArcos was exactly what I was looking for in terms of a summer volunteer and travel experience. It was the perfect way to see Costa Rica with other likeminded teenagers who also wanted to travel and experience the culture. The volunteer opportunities, community involvement, environmental exploration, and friends I made along the way have helped to shape me and who I will become in the future.

Really fun way for her to earn community service hours
December 22, 2022by: Parent of Adalin TullockIt was a great opportunity for her to have her first international experience and first solo traveling experience while within the safety of a group trip format. It was also a really fun way for her to earn community service hours and make friends and explore a new environment all at the same time.
Make the most of every day
December 22, 2022by: Sonia SchnellMake the most of every day because they start to fly by when you are there so always get out and go try new things. Nothing is jumping out at me as really challenging it all was pretty great. I think definitely language improvements were for me the biggest benefits. My Spanish definitely got better and I got much more confident with it. I also got much more experience and learned a bunch about traveling on my own in a new place.
Don’t be afraid to try new things
December 21, 2022by: Ella MelroseProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
Take advantage of your free time! Walk around the city. Try Mediterranean and Arabic food while you’re in Granada, and other restaurants that look interesting! Don’t be afraid to try new things. Spend time getting to know your roommates and host family. They will be a very important part of your experience! Get to know other students in your Spanish class and try to make friends both inside and outside the program group. I’ve learned so much more than just Spanish while I’ve been here. Although my Spanish has improved dramatically over 4 weeks, I also got to experience living in a city with a lot of history. Living here has made me more appreciative of the simple things, and I think I’ll take memories of this city with me for many years.
Experience of a lifetime
December 21, 2022by: Parent of Travis GoodwinProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
My son told me it was an experience of a lifetime :) He gained confidence in conversational Spanish, which was great, and he had lots of fun. The overall experience was tremendous. He made some great new friends, and they are already making plans to meet up in NY and LA. He expanded his interest and appreciation for travel and learning about different cultures. He also gained the confidence you get from meeting new people, adjusting to new circumstances, and figuring out things for yourself. He enjoyed all the excursions. Thank you for providing this great opportunity!. It's an incredible opportunity for your kids to learn language and culture, to make connections with people from all over, and to grow as people. Honestly the whole thing was great and I would highly recommend. My son (like a lot of teenagers) had a few challenging years. First the pandemic/school closures, then a terrible knee injury that required surgery and took him away from his passion (soccer) for a year. Getting to go on this trip was a silver lining to it all!
Growing experience
December 20, 2022by: Devon LeonardBring good walking shoes because you walk most places. This was my first time traveling alone, so it was a bit difficult to try and manage everything by myself but it was definitely a growing experience and it taught me a lot about responsibility. I learned so much about the culture and cuisine that I wouldn't have learned about in my regular Spanish classes at home. I have a new found appreciation for Mexico and everything it has to offer.
Impressed by the timeliness and professionalism of the Arcos staff
December 20, 2022by: Parent of Alonzo TovancheProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
The greatest benefits were greater Spanish fluency, interacting with the local family, and learning more about Mexican culture. Read all of the information provided by the program. It is so clear and helpful. We were impressed by the timeliness and professionalism of the Arcos staff. They are so easy to work with, so timely, and so thorough. Our boys had their flight delayed but Arcos was completely aware of any developments and provided updates along the way.
Homestay houses are very nice
December 19, 2022by: Sophia BoyThe best aspects for me were making many close relationships with new friends and the amazing teachers and school. Homestay houses are very nice. I enjoyed seeing new animals and learning so much about Costa Rican culture. Bring something to do for free days/time between after school and activities. Bring water everywhere you go. Make friends fast. Buy food/snacks to eat in-between home stay meals.
Made lots of amazing friends, had fun experiences, and learned independence
December 19, 2022by: Talia WeizmanDon’t be afraid to try new things, meet new people, and practice your Spanish. The biggest challenge for me was foreign food upsetting my stomach. The bigget benefits were that I gained an appreciation of Spanish language and Costa Rican culture, l made lots of amazing friends, had fun experiences, and learned independence.
Learned so much more Spanish
December 19, 2022by: Alexandria CravenI learned so much more Spanish, and it was great practice for traveling alone in a foreign country. Make sure you know at least a little bit of Spanish before you come, and don’t forget to bring an umbrella. I’d say the biggest challenges for me were just being away from home for so long, and the language barrier.
Try to speak Spanish as much as possible
December 18, 2022by: Emily AdlerTry to speak Spanish as much as possible because the practice is what will really help you improve. My biggest challenge was probably trying to immerse myself enough in the culture as it was difficult to find a balance between making friends with the other students and actually practicing Spanish. The best benefits from my experience were that I was able to see what life is like in other parts of the world and being forced to speak Spanish at home helped me become more comfortable in my skills.
A lot more comfortable being independent
December 18, 2022by: Teagan RobertsonI greatly improved my Spanish skills and confidence speaking Spanish conversationally. I also became a lot more comfortable being independent. I also enjoyed the cultural exposure. I would say make sure you know that you have to bring cash to exchange, not a credit/debit card, because exchanging is much more accessible with cash and the exchange rate is a lot better.
My Spanish improved so much
December 17, 2022by: Nava CarlyleProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
The Spanish classes are cool and I learned a lot and was challenged. The biggest benefits for me were that my Spanish improved so much due to being around locals, my host family, and taking Spanish classes at the University of Granada. It can be hard at first finding your way around the city.
Loved learning about a new culture
December 17, 2022by: Sydney SapienzaDon’t go crazy trying to learn as much Spanish as you can before coming. Other students will be around the same level as you and you can help each other as well as using Google translate. I loved learning about a new culture. It was just so amazing, and I’ll always remember this experience and have stories to tell.
Met really lovely people as well as fellow classmates
December 17, 2022by: Elizabeth RaikesI liked talking in Spanish to people and got good exposure. I also met really lovely people as well as fellow classmates. Remember to interact with people as much as possible. My biggest challenge was talking to my host parents because sometimes it could be really hard to get my point across.
The connections I made with other people were amazing
December 17, 2022by: Leah FitzgeraldDont worry! It is 100x easier to learn if you just go for it without fear. Even if you mess up no one cares. Don't bring more than you need. And get a debit card it makes it so much easier. The connections I made with other people were amazing and more than I ever hoped. I got so close with so many people. I never thought I would cry on my way out, or on the plane coming home, or when I finally got home. I miss those girls and my home-stay more than anything. It was a different relationship than I've ever had because they have no attachment to me, and in 3 weeks I am more conformable with them than some of my real friends. Cata told us that we are one of the closest groups, and I could not have seen it any other way. I can say with confidence I love each one of the group members. I love my host family and hope I can see them someday in the future. My biggest take away was definitely the relationships; with the teachers, students, directors, and host parents. I was never scared, or upset or unhappy. I honestly can't remember another time I was that happy for 3 weeks in a row, and there is something to say about that. Huge shout out to the teachers, Maria G. is an amazing person and teacher and I owe her so much.
Meeting new people and having fun adventures
December 16, 2022by: Lorenzo TovancheProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
Use your free time to explore and enjoy the city, don't just stay at home. Make connections with the other people in your group, it will make it a lot easier to be close to a big group of people in the city rather than just a couple people you are staying with. Challenges were feeling out of place, struggling with the language, getting thrown out of a routine. The positives were meeting new people and having fun adventures I never would have had on my own.
This program also taught me life skills
December 16, 2022by: Avani SoodI feel much stronger in my Spanish and I learned how to travel on my own. This program also taught me life skills without being alone. At first speaking Spanish with my host family was a little hard but once you start they are very patient and helpful.
Met so many amazing people!
December 16, 2022by: Paloma RussTry to talk to your home stay as much as possible in Spanish. It will definitely be hard at first but they are there to help you learn. I met so many amazing people and got to experience some once-in-a-lifetime things. I also learned more about traveling abroad and how to do it safety and learn about a different culture.
Gained so many friendships
December 16, 2022by: Amila MorehouseI gained so many friendships and connections from all over. I got to practice my Spanish. I got so much freedom and learned how to live more on my own and figure things out for myself. I also got to experience the beautiful country that Costa Rica is.
Have fun!
December 16, 2022by: Madison ParkerHave fun! Find out where the laundry is and look for restaurants a little farther than two blocks away to reach many places and different types of food. The greatest benefits were forming friendships with Argentinians and the other students, practicing Spanish, and learning about Argentina and living in a new environment.
Super great and well-organized program
December 16, 2022by: Parent of Noah vanbredaProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico
The biggest benefits were getting out of his comfort zone, being away in a foreign country and experiencing unique activities. This is a program for kids that are okay being our of their comfort zone. Overall super great and well-organized program. Noah really enjoyed the activities planned and it also helped that he got along with all the other boys (which makes a huge difference).
Can't wait to go back!
December 16, 2022by: Parent of Dylan EdelsteinProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico
Many benefits; exposure to culture, social confidence, much greater interest in Spanish language and Mexican culture. Can't wait to go back! Some places your child will go there will not be any people who speak English. Basic Spanish skills will lead to a better experience, especially if they want to move about independently.. Pamela, the program director, was amazing, Dylan can't stop talking about how great she was and how her connections are what made the trip so incredible for him.
Really loved the program!
December 16, 2022by: Parent of Shauna MaenzaShauna loved the language teachers, Nahú (the program director) and everyone connected to the program. Her host mom, Anita, was wonderful and welcoming and the whole experience was impactful. We recognized that a two week trip wouldn't vastly improve Shauna's Spanish language skills but we weren't confident she was ready for a full month. A full month or more in a Spanish speaking country is what I would recommend. I took a chance on Arcos not knowing anything about the programs you run and I am so glad I did. Shauna really loved the program!
Frst time traveling alone
December 16, 2022by: Parent of Paloma RussPaloma gained a sense of independence and came away feeling very proud of herself for completing the program. It was her first time traveling alone. She made a lot of nice friends. Expect that your child may be very homesick the first several days until they settle in.
The homestay was amazing
December 15, 2022by: Parent of Amila MorehouseThe greatest benefits were increased proficiency in Spanish, independence and self confidence. All was great. The homestay was amazing, the cultural experiences were so fun and the excursions were wonderful. My daughter really liked the staff, made great friends and felt very safe the whole trip.
I now have friends all over the country
December 15, 2022by: Travis GoodwinProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
The biggest benefit were the friends I made. For me, I now have friends all over the country who I will stay in touch with and hopefully get to see again in the future. Talk to locals and make friends with everyone. It was hard towards the end of the second week to get a sufficient amount of sleep, but overall wasn't too bad.
Tremendous growth experience
December 15, 2022by: Parent of Lillian GreverProgram: Outdoor Adventure & Cultural Exploration in Granada, Spain
The biggest benefits were developing friendships with others in her group, exposure to and appreciation of different cultures, independence in navigating the trip with no parental involvement. Trust the program, allow your child to communicate on their own schedule. Lillian could not have been happier from this trip. She wanted to stay longer and definitely wants to return to Costa Rica now. She speaks most excitedly about the sights, the food, and the host family’s hospitality. It was a tremendous growth experience for her. Thank you!
Absolutely thrilled with the experience
December 15, 2022by: Parent of Wes Michener-WallThe biggest benefits were ganing confidence and independence in their abilities to travel and experience life on their own. Overall, we were absolutely thrilled with the experience Wes had!! It was wonderful and life-changing in so many positive ways!! We will definitely be looking at another program next summer!
Now able to have a full conversation in Spanish
December 14, 2022by: Willow MintzI would say that students should try their hardest to speak to their friends in Spanish as well has their host parents. The biggest challenge was working on getting more confident with my Spanish skills. I am now able to have a full conversation in Spanish.
I made so many great friends!
December 14, 2022by: Charlotte GillespieYou’re only there for a short time so take the opportunity and do some activities. I had homesickness for the first couple of days and it was a challenge communicating with my host family. But both things got better with time. I made so many great friends! Also, I have a much easier time speaking Spanish.
Send your child abroad!
December 14, 2022by: Parent of Levi GrayProgram: Outdoor Adventure & Cultural Exploration in Granada, Spain
The greatest benefits of the Arcos adventure trip was that Levi was able to be more autonomous, experience a new culture from the inside and push himself physically. He shared with me that some of the adventure experiences were slightly out of his comfort zone but he was proud when he completed them. Send your child abroad!
Confidence in her language skills and appreciation for Mexican culture
December 14, 2022by: Parent of Lilah Amon-LucasProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
She gained confidence in her language skills and appreciation for Mexican culture. Her host family/mother was wonderful - that was a terrific part of the experience. It sounded from my daughter's account like the staff and teachers were wonderful, too.
I will never forget the friends I made and the experiences
December 13, 2022by: Reese JamesonProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
Be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. The bigget benefit forme was definitely getting around and speaking only Spanish but it provided me with an opportunity to be independent and figure out things on my own. I will never forget the friends I made and the experiences.
A newfound appreciation for Mexico
December 13, 2022by: Devon Leonard_Bring good walking shoes because you walk to most places. This was my first trip away from home where I was alone, so it was a bit of a challenge trying to figure everything out by myself. But it was definitely a growing experience and I learned so much about responsibility. I learned so many amazing things about a culture that I never would have seen by just being in my Spanish classes at home. Through the activities, the amazing people, and by being immersed in the culture, I have a newfound appreciation for Mexico.
Incredibly well-operated organization
December 13, 2022by: Parent of Gavin McgowanProgram: Camino de Santiago: Hiking the Way in Galicia, Spain
The greatest benefits were autonomy, language skills, and friendships with a broad spectrum of kids. Highly recommend both the language and culture program and the Camino hike. It was a maturing experience for our son and an incredibly well-operated organization.
Self-confidence and independence grew dramatically
December 13, 2022by: Parent of Elizabeth AndersonElizabeth's self-confidence and independence grew dramatically after the two weeks. She was also extremely happy while she was in Costa Rica. She enjoyed the cultural activities and made close friendships. For my daughter, it made a big difference to meet with other participants before starting the trip. This eliminated her primary anxiety driven by feelings of "What if they don't like me, or I don't like them?"
Awesome trip
October 24, 2022by: Noah V - United StatesProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico
I had an amazing time on the surf and hike trip- the other boys were cool, our program director Pam was great, and the surfing was fantastic. The worst part was getting montezuma revenge - no bueno. Favorite parts were Chacahua, surfing, deep sea fishing and the bioluminescent trip. Hiking portion was alright but could have skipped it - the food at the place where we stayed was probably better suited for vegans. Wish there was AC especially in Puerto Escondido where it was heck of hot. Overall it was a sick trip.
Memorable experience
September 20, 2022by: Sydney Sapienza - United StatesThis was a program that combined Spanish language immersion with Mexican culinary exposure in Oaxaca. Class of 5 visited local homes each day to assist the lady of the house prepare the days meal. It was handy to have a program director escorting the group as she was also able to translate as the locals often spoke rather quickly. All in all a great two week experience and highly recommended.
Crazy dope trip
September 19, 2022by: Zak Battla - United StatesProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico
Seriously the best trip I've ever done, from exploring the old city, to hiking the mountains to surfing the beaches, everything was wicked fun and wildly amazing. even better i had 3 guys to enjoy my time with. i love having that super small group bc it allows everyone to bond so much closer. the housing sitch was great, beside having no AC the places were serene and beautiful, the activities were so much fun, and if it seem too much for you we didn't do things every day, some days me and my bro just played in bed watching movies while looking over the beach. other days we chilled on the beach and tuned out some reggae. overall this rlly was a dope trip and i so highly recommend it.
The best two weeks of my summer!
September 14, 2022by: Lillian Grever - United StatesThis trip gave me so many new friends from around the country, amazing opportunities for community service, and the freedom to explore and dive into the rich culture of Costa Rica! I felt so safe within the community (Atenas) and also felt very connected to my host family and the Arcos leaders. The two weeks went by way too fast; I wish I could have stayed the whole summer! I am so grateful for the friendships I made while on this trip, as well as the variety of experiences we had!
Great experience with Arcos
September 03, 2022by: A S - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
I had a great time on the Arcos program. I spent three weeks in the program and I found that everything was organized extremely well by the staff, and they were all extremely helpful whenever there was a problem. A few students missed their connecting flight from Madrid to Grenada, and one of the program directors, Alejandro, flew out to meet us and make sure our arrival went smoothly from that point on. Arcos went above and beyond during the weekend excursions, the trips to Madrid and Almuñecar were all planned and organized meticulously. The teachers at the CLM were very friendly and clearly passionate while teaching. Classes were engaging and enjoyable, though at times I found the 4-hour length a bit excessive. Overall, a very enjoyable and memorable experience I would recommend to anyone looking to spend time in an abroad program.
Great experience for my 15 yr old son
September 01, 2022by: Jim Edelstein - United StatesProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico
My son had a great experience in Mexico, socially and culturally. He learned a lot and came home excited to do more traveling and more surfing. He also came back passionate about becoming fluent in Spanish and has started studying on his own! This was his first experience with a trip like this (travel without family) and it was a huge success, big thank you to Pamela and the entire Arcos team.
Something new
August 25, 2022by: Sean O'Leary - United StatesI learned lots of things, improved my spanish, made lasting friends, and created great memories. I did all kinds of things such as going to museums, farms, and performances. I tried so many new foods and drinks some of them I liked some of them I didn't, but at least I can say I tried them.
A perfect first high school travel experience!
August 24, 2022by: Dana Russ - United StatesThis was the first time our 15 yr old daughter traveled anywhere by herself, much less to a foreign country with no one she knew. She was so nervous- hardly speaking the language; living with a family she didn’t know; making new friends; facing the unknown! But she took on the challenge and was SO happy she did. She had a wonderful experience and came home a very happy camper, feeling so confident and accomplished. No doubt Arcos had everything to do with it. From beginning to end Arcos was on it. Our questions & concerns were promptly addressed; the whole process was well organized and uncomplicated; information was clear & thoughtful; safety & well being of kids always seemed to be their first priority; and the program offered a perfect mix of cultural and language immersion with adventure sprinkled in. We recommend Arcos without hesitation! Our daughter has no regrets and would do it again.
Such a great experience!
August 24, 2022by: Amila Morehouse - United StatesI had an amazing time on this trip. It was the perfect mix of volunteering, exploring, learning and connecting with others. We had a lot of freedom which really allowed us to get to know Costa Rica better. I also got the opportunity to make so many friends from all around the US. Overall it was an awesome trip.
Wonderful outdoor adventure program in Granada, Spain
August 23, 2022by: Catherine Feingold - United StatesProgram: Outdoor Adventure & Cultural Exploration in Granada, Spain
My 16 year old son loved this program in Granada. The staff did a great job from the application prcess through to the return. Arcos has two programs in Granada, Spain--one that is a traditional language immersion program and one focused on outdoor exploration. My son chose the outdoor program ad he loved learning about Granada by hiking and biking in the Sierra Nevada, swimming in waterfalls and exploring caves. Granada is a safe city that allows teens to feel independent in a fun enviornment. I highly recommend this program!

She had a great time. Wonderful experience
August 23, 2022by: Rebecca Davis - United StatesShe had a wonderful experience. It was worth the money for sure. As a parent, I wish that I would have had more communication from the program, I would have felt she was safer in the beginning. It turned out fine but I was nervous the day she travelled and the first few days she was there. Otherwise, it was a great program and life changing for her.
Life changing!
August 23, 2022by: Leah Fitzgerald - United StatesI love my exchange. Life changing. I miss it everyday. It was the most beautiful experience. I learned so much about myself and others. It made me independent, and took me out of my comfort zone. I become more confident in my speaking and understand of Spanish, and well as the culture. I fell in love with the country, and the people. My home stay was amazing and I keep in touch with them often. As well as the friends I made, which are going to be lifelong friendships. I fell in love with traveling and this program and recommended it anyone that even considers going. It was the best decision of my life.

Amazing experience!
August 23, 2022by: Ana Saliba - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain
I went to Granada, Spain for three weeks and it was the best trip ever! The coordinators were incredibly helpful and were always available to talk or answer any questions I had. While In Granada, we visited many important and historic destinations but also had lots of time to explore the city on our own. My host mom was super sweet and easy-going! I hope to visit her again! I also met so many amazing people on my trip; now I have friends from Spain and from all over America! Overall, this trip was definitely worth it and I totally recommend it to anyone looking to have a life-changing summer vacation as well as immerse themselves in Spanish culture!
I learned a lot about Mexico!
January 18, 2022by: Marlowe Demisch - United StatesProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico
This was a really great experience for me and I learned a lot about Mexico. I went to shops, markets, went around Oaxaca, and tried tons of new foods. I felt very inmersed in the culture. I also discivered a lot of Oaxaca city and its history. I learned a lot about mural work, and the colonial color palletes. As someone who lives in New York City, it was really great to compare and contrast the two cities.
Son still talking about the trip!
January 11, 2022by: Arthur Anstey - United StatesProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico

December 31, 2021by: Sonny Betterton Gage - United StatesProgram: Pacific Surf Camp & Cultural Exploration in Oaxaca, Mexico
I went on this trip the summer of 2021 with two of my friends and it was some of the most fun I had I had so many new experiences in such a small time and I will remember it for the rest of my life. We got to get to cities and wilderness learn about other cultures and do new thing in every activity packed day we also were given independence to explore and learn with the other kids and we were not babied.
I had the best time!
December 31, 2021by: Julia Castagna - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Granada, Spain

I got out of my comfort zone
December 25, 2021by: Camille Collins - United StatesProgram: Spanish Immersion in Oaxaca, Mexico
I experienced a huge culture shock by living in Oaxaca for a month. I tried interesting foods, experienced different customs, and interacted with new customs. While it was difficult to adjust to the new place, it really made me grow as a person. I learned how to navigate foreign places on my own and to rely on myself to communicate with others. I really believe that being exposed to a different kind of household and economic situation from my own was incredibly beneficial and opened my eyes to the privileges I have. Besides this character development, I learned a ton about the Spanish language and Mexican culture. Overall, the trip was incredible in both the ways it changed my character and in the valuable knowledge I attained.

Our daughter loved this trip
November 17, 2021by: Ester LeviteOur 16 year old daughter loved this trip. She went for 3 weeks. Loved Catalina, the counselor there. Brent was fantastic coordinating before the trip and Catalina was fantastic in Costa Rica. Her family was great. Her host mom was a delicious cook. The classes were great, the outings were fun, from surf lessons to cooking classes to seeing a baby sloth, there was a great variety of things to do. There was also a bit of downtime to go to town. She made friends and went to town on a few occasions with them. The trip, the program and staff are great!! Everyone is very straight forward. The trip was exactly what they said it would be. We were all very happy!

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Arcos Journeys Abroad ensure student safety while abroad?
Safety is our foundation. With over 20 years of experience, we provide a safe and supervised environment through our "Trained Onsite Staff" approach. Our onsite directors are available 24/7 for emergencies, serving as the "eyes and ears" on the ground from the moment students land until their return flight. We only select destinations we deem safe and provide the structural support necessary for students to navigate them with confidence.
What kind of housing can I expect on an Arcos program?
We prioritize authentic cultural immersion through a "relationship-first" housing model. While we utilize various types of housing depending on the program—including hotels, guest houses, and mountain lodges—the majority of our programs feature a homestay component. Every host family is personally vetted by our onsite staff through in-home inspections and interviews, ensuring a comfortable, secure, and welcoming "home away from home."
Is international medical insurance included in the program price?
Yes. To ensure a consistent and high standard of care, comprehensive international medical insurance is included for all participants as part of the program price. We automatically enroll every student in a premium group policy managed by International Student Insurance (ISI) and underwritten by Cigna Global. This ensures immediate access to quality healthcare and professional coordination without additional out-of-pocket stress for families.
How are meals handled, and can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Meals are a highlight of the Arcos experience! Most meals are included and are provided either by host families or at curated local restaurants. We take great pride in our ability to accommodate special dietary needs—such as vegetarian, gluten-free, or specific food allergies—provided we are notified during the application process. Our goal is to ensure every student is well-nourished and ready for their daily adventures.
How does the arrival process work and is there airport pickup?
To provide maximum flexibility for our families, students book their travel independently. We provide specific "arrival windows" for each program to ensure that our onsite directors and staff are at the airport to greet every student personally. From the moment you clear customs, we take over the logistics, providing seamless transportation to your housing and a warm welcome to your host country.
