Spanish Immersion in Barcelona province

December 30, 2024by: Nick Smith - United KingdomProgram: Live & Study Spanish at Your Teacher's Home

I had the most incredible experience at Mónica's house on the El Maresme coast in the province of Barcelona. Walking the peaceful trails of Montnegre i Corredor Natural Park with her golden retrievers, Rumba and Samba, was a true highlight—their joyful energy made every moment special. Chatting with other dog walkers along the way gave me a wonderful chance to practice my Spanish. A stroll through Mataró with Mónica and her mom, Josefina, deepened my immersion as I practiced Spanish with locals and embraced the culture. As a music lover, learning Spanish through song lyrics was both fun and effective, and a lively night out with Mónica's friends added even more unforgettable memories. The trip ended with a delicious seafood casserole lovingly prepared by Juan, Mónica's father—a perfect conclusion to a truly enriching experience!

A Guide to Learning Spanish in Barcelona

Spanish Courses in Barcelona

While the decision to attend a language school in Barcelona may be easy, choosing which school and what type of program is best for you will take some more consideration. Barcelona’s popularity as a tourist destination has led to an explosion in language schools, but it’s important to remember that costs, quality, and benefits will vary from school to school. Doing your research is the first step to ensuring you find the best fit for your needs.

There are several different types of Spanish courses in Barcelona. The most common option for students looking for intensive language study in Barcelona is a language school. These schools offer a lot of flexibility, meaning you can choose from a variety of start dates and remain at the school as long as you’d like. Classes typically meet Monday through Friday for four to eight hours and focus on grammar, conversation, and cultural topics. Students can expect to progress quickly if they participate in classes and remember to speak Spanish outside of the classroom as well.

If you’re interested in receiving college credit or enrolling in a more structured program, you may be interested in intensive language programs run by local universities or at Spanish schools in Barcelona. These courses are aligned with the academic calendar and usually run for a full semester or during summer break. You’ll spend weekdays taking a variety of classes that focus on language skills and Spanish culture. Along with your daily language instruction, these programs often include group excursions to visit areas of interest in the region, like the medieval town of Besalú or the Penedès wine region.

Learning Spanish in Barcelona may feel relaxed, but don’t let that fool you. You’re still expected to be punctual (though strolling into a party late is perfectly acceptable!). While you should be working hard and participating in class, you’ll be rewarded by a midday siesta break as well as numerous breaks due to local and national holidays. The Spanish may work when necessary, but they can also teach you a thing or two about how to relax!
