Many Spanish immersion programs include a homestay, but not all of them build it into the fee. Some bundle a room and meals with tuition; others list it as one housing option next to a student residence or apartment. The programs below, in Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Argentina, either include a homestay or offer one, and each is labeled so you know which.

If you want to practice Spanish at breakfast, not just in class, a homestay is one of the most direct ways to do it. Here's what "include" means, why homestays work for language learning, and which programs to compare.

How do you know if a homestay is included or an add-on?

Check the listing's "What's Included" section, then confirm with the provider. "Included" means the room, and usually some or all meals, are covered by the program fee. "Add-on" or "option" means you choose a homestay and it may be priced separately, or you may be able to pick a different kind of housing instead.

Meals and laundry are where programs differ most. One program may cover three meals a day and laundry; another covers meals but not laundry.

Benefits of Staying in a Homestay for Learning Spanish

Group sharing breakfast and coffee at a long table in a sunlit stone courtyard.

Shared meals are where most of the extra speaking practice happens: hours a week that class alone can’t give you.

A homestay puts Spanish in your day outside the classroom, which is what most learners say they're missing back home.

  • Daily speaking practice. Breakfast, dinner, and "where are you going tonight?" conversations add up to hours a week that class alone can't give you.
  • Everyday language. You hear how people actually talk: shortened words, regional slang, how they ask for the salt. Textbooks skip all of it.
  • Cultural insight. Meals, holidays, and routines teach you things about daily life that a tour won't.
  • Built-in correction. Hosts can tell you when something sounds off, if you ask them to.
  • A softer landing. Having a home base and a person to ask for help makes a new city less overwhelming.

Honest caveat: a homestay doesn't guarantee immersion. If your host family speaks English with you or you spend evenings with other students, you'll get less out of it. A homestay also isn't the right fit for everyone. If you want to cook for yourself, keep your own hours, or have dietary needs a family may struggle to meet, a student residence or apartment may suit you better. You can still get daily speaking practice through language exchanges, school activities, and time out in town.

Spanish Immersion Programs That Include Homestay Accommodation

Here are some Spanish immersion programs that include a homestay. Each one is labeled as either included in the program fee or an available option. Details come from the programs' GoAbroad listings and can change, so confirm current dates and costs with the provider.

1. Live & Study Spanish at Your Teacher's Home in Spain with Spanish Express

The program is the homestay. You live with a native Spanish teacher and learn through conversation at home, at meals, and around town, in cities from Barcelona and Valencia to Cádiz, Sevilla, and Burgos. Cultural activities, transport, and tickets are part of the package, and you get one full free day a week.

  • Where: Spain (Barcelona, Menorca, Valencia, Cádiz, Sevilla, Burgos, and Cáceres are listed)
  • When: Year round, with start dates you choose
  • Length: 1 week to 1 month
  • Homestay: Included. Accommodation, three meals a day (weekdays and weekends), a welcome dinner, laundry, and Wi-Fi. The listing doesn't describe the room, so ask whether it's private.
  • Age: All ages

2. Full Spanish Immersion Homestay for Adults in Málaga, Spain with Agualivar Spanish School

This is the most "family" option here: a quiet beachfront villa near Málaga where you live with your teachers, in groups of four students at most. Lessons run in the mornings, about 15 hours a week, and afternoons are for workshops and practice in Spanish. It's adults-only, and you do need some Spanish going in.

  • Where: Near Málaga, Andalusia, Spain
  • When: Year round
  • Length: 1 to 4 weeks, with 15 hours of lessons a week
  • Homestay: Included. Full board, materials and tuition, two afternoon workshops, and a trip to Frigiliana or Nerja.
  • Age: 21+, with existing Spanish skills required

Towns like Málaga and Valencia are small enough that the walk home is part of the immersion.

3. Authentic Spanish or Maya Language Immersion in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico with Na'atik Language and Culture Institute

This is not the Cancún version of Mexico. Na'atik is a nonprofit in the Yucatán's Zona Maya, where you study Spanish (or Yucatec Maya) in classes tailored to your level and live with a local family. Your tuition also supports the institute's English classes for local and Indigenous students.

  • Where: Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico
  • When: Year round
  • Length: 1 to 4 weeks, from $1,100 for 1 week up to $4,250 for 4 weeks
  • Homestay: Included. Accommodation, three meals a day (weekdays and weekends), a welcome dinner, and Wi-Fi. Laundry and some activity costs aren't included.
  • Age: 9+; parents or guardians of under-18s must sign a medical release waiver

4. Spanish + Cultural Immersion in Sámara and Heredia, Costa Rica with Intercultura Costa Rica

You can study at a beach campus in Sámara, a colonial city campus in Heredia, or both. Groups are capped at six students, with 20 hours a week of group classes across 12 levels, and free daily activities like salsa, cooking, and yoga. You choose between living with a Costa Rican family or in a student apartment.

  • Where: Sámara and Heredia, Costa Rica
  • When: Year round
  • Length: From 1 week, with 20 hours of group classes a week
  • Homestay: Option, priced separately. A homestay with a private room, breakfast, dinner, and laundry costs about $225 a week in Heredia and $245 in Sámara, on top of tuition of $330 to $350 a week. A student apartment is the other option.
  • Age: 18+

5. Intensive Spanish Program in Nosara, Costa Rica with Nosara Spanish Institute

This one shows what an add-on looks like. Tuition is listed separately from housing, so you book your accommodation on top: a homestay with meals, a room at the school's residence, or your own rental. Classes are small, in 10- or 20-hour weekly formats, about 500 meters from the ocean.

  • Where: Nosara, Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
  • When: Year round
  • Length: From 1 week
  • Homestay: Add-on. A homestay with a private room, breakfast, and dinner adds about $275 a week (2027 rates).
  • Cost: $325 for 1 week of 10-hour group classes, tuition only, or $600 with a homestay (2027 rates)

In Costa Rica and Mexico, homestay programs often build family meals and cultural activities into the fee.

6. Spanish Language & Psychology in San Sebastián, Spain with USAC

If you need university credit, this is a semester-length option in a Basque coastal city, with an intensive language approach and electives shared with local students. You can live in an apartment or a homestay, and the homestay, which includes full board, is priced separately from the program fee. It's for university students aged 18–30.

  • Where: San Sebastián, Spain
  • When: Fall, spring, summer, and academic year terms. Spring 2027 runs January 11 to May 8, and fall 2027 runs September 1 to December 17
  • Length: A semester (about four months)
  • Homestay: Option, priced separately. You choose an apartment, a homestay, or a residence hall. The homestay includes full board and costs $5,841 for spring 2027, on top of the $11,980 program fee.
  • Age: 18–30; university sophomores through seniors

7. Advanced Spanish Immersion in Buenos Aires, Argentina with IES Abroad

For students who already speak Spanish well, this semester program has you take courses at Buenos Aires universities and live with an Argentine family or señora, or in a studio apartment. The homestay is part of the program fee. It's the most expensive option here, and it's for advanced speakers.

  • Where: Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • When: Fall, spring, and academic year terms. Fall runs July to November, and spring 2027 runs February 27 to June 26
  • Length: Semester
  • Homestay: Included. You get a private room with a family or señora and 12 meals a week. A studio apartment without meals is the other option.
  • Age: 18+, with four semesters of college-level Spanish
  • Cost: $16,830 for spring 2027, including the homestay

What to Expect Living in a Homestay

Woman reading a book while cooking in a small apartment kitchen at sunset.

You’ll eat what the family eats, when they eat it, so expect to learn the household’s rhythm as much as the language.

Expect a real household, not a hotel. These are the basics most students run into, though it varies by host and country.

  • Meals. Many programs list three meals a day, but you'll eat what the family eats, at the family's times.
  • Your room. Often a private room, sometimes with a private bathroom. Ask what's guaranteed before you book.
  • House rules. Each family sets its own, and none of the programs here publish a list, so ask about guests, curfews, and keys before you arrive. Intercultura, for example, asks students to take part in family life and to give a new homestay two or three days before asking to switch.
  • Laundry. Sometimes included, sometimes not. Na'atik, for example, doesn't include it.
  • Dietary needs. Tell the program well before you arrive. Vegetarian or allergy-friendly hosting is often possible but isn't automatic.
  • The adjustment. The first few days can be tiring. You're listening in a second language all day, and that's normal.

At Na'atik in Mexico, 2018 participant Theresa Anderton lived with a family of six, with her own room and a shared bathroom. Her day ran around the family's meals: lunch "around 2:30 p.m." and dinner "around 8:00 p.m." The kids turned out to be her best practice partners: "I felt more comfortable making mistakes in front of them" (GoAbroad interview). At Agualivar in Spain, co-director Elisabeth Díez says the teachers have breakfast with students and cook and eat lunch with them at 2 p.m. every day (GoAbroad interview).

Tips for Making the Most of Your Homestay

  • Eat with the family. Mealtimes are your best daily practice, so skip the headphones.
  • Ask for corrections. Tell your hosts early that you want to be corrected. Most won't unless you ask.
  • Use Spanish at home, even when it's clumsy. Hosts who speak English will often switch if you let them.
  • Bring something small from home. A little gift shows you care about the relationship.
  • Say what you need. If something isn't working, talk to your program coordinator early.
  • Take what you hear to class. Bring new phrases to your teacher and ask how they're used.

FAQ

Is homestay included in Spanish immersion programs?

Sometimes. Some programs bundle the room, meals, and laundry into the fee, while others offer a homestay as one housing option alongside residences or apartments. Check each listing's "What's Included" section, then confirm with the provider before you apply.

What does a homestay usually include?

Usually a bedroom and some or all meals, and sometimes laundry. Some programs list three meals a day, weekdays and weekends. Laundry and activities vary, and some programs sell housing separately. Ask for your program's exact inclusions in writing so there are no surprises on arrival.

Is a homestay better than a student residence for learning Spanish?

For speaking practice, usually yes, since you're using Spanish at meals and around the house. A residence gives you more independence and more time with other students. If maximum immersion is your goal, a homestay is generally the stronger choice.

How long should you stay in a homestay to improve your Spanish?

Longer is better, though even a week or two helps. Tre Ronne, who did the Intensive Spanish Program at Nosara Spanish Institute in 2024 and lived with a host family, said the staff helped "progress much more rapidly in my language acquisition" and called the host family "extremely supportive and helpful."

Can you choose your host family?

Generally not. Programs match you with a host family based on the details you submit. You can usually share preferences, such as dietary needs, pets, or smoking, and the program will try to accommodate them. Ask how the matching works.

The hosts you meet are often the relationship you keep long after the program ends.

GoAbroad lets you filter thousands of programs by destination, program type, duration, and cost, then compare your options side by side using verified reviews from people who've actually participated. You can save and organize your shortlist for free with MyGoAbroad.

Do you need to speak Spanish before joining a homestay program?

Not always. Many programs take beginners and place you by level, but some require prior Spanish, like Agualivar's adult program. Check the listing's language requirements before you apply, and ask about beginner support if you're starting from scratch.
