Marine Conservation Expedition in the Seychelles

Travel to a country known for its equatorial climate and enter a year-round summer in Seychelles. Spend your days diving in the supreme clear waters of Mahe visiting different dive sites and islands. On your expeditions, you could see an array of marine life, such as dolphins, manta rays, octopus, whale sharks, varying fish species, coral reefs, and the endangered hawksbill and green sea turtles. In collaboration with local partners and GVI staff, you’ll collect data, develop marine and environmental education programs, and survey for critical local governmental marine efforts. This is an opportunity to contribute to sustainable conservation efforts and level up your marine conservation knowledge and practical skills. GVI works alongside local partner organizations to ensure the successful outcome and longevity of all our programs. Use weekend trips to visit other islands and cities, explore botanical gardens and add recreational diving to your list. Start to better understand local traditional culture and meet fellow volunteers with varying national backgrounds.

Volunteering in the Seychelles: North Island Conservation

This fascinating volunteer project offers you the chance to actively contribute to nature conservation on an almost entirely uninhabited island in Seychelles. North Island, your project location, is at the heart of the Seychelles archipelago. Islands are oftentimes called "laboratories for evolution” explaining why so many species live on the isolated islands of Seychelles. But times used to be different. Until the 70s, North Island was used for intense coconut plantations, which had a strong negative impact on the native flora and fauna due to invasive species. Thus, this volunteer project aims to restore the island's original ecosystem by applying different renaturation measures. Your tasks will vary depending on what is required to implement the necessary conservation measures. You will work with a team of international volunteers and experienced researchers. Your work will focus on recording sea turtle populations. You will survey the beach on foot at regular intervals to monitor the growth of baby turtles and the population levels of various endangered species. You will also be responsible for photographing the entire coral reef.

I've learned so much during my 4 weeks here!

I had a great time participating in the marine conservation program in the Seychelles! The training on EFR and advanced open water the first week was a nice way to be introduced to the base and get used to the schedule. From the 2nd week onwards you get presentations and practice for surveys. I also loved being involved in the data processing, in particular the models created from photogrammetry surveys. Being able to dive every day really helped me improve and feel more comfortable in the water. The location is gorgeous and I've learned so much during my 4 weeks here!
