As an English teacher in Vietnam, you have tons of choices for where to work. Here's the lowdown on oft-loved places by past teachers, and where many teach English in Vietnam programs are based.
English teachers in Vietnam will find the majority of teaching opportunities located in the two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), due to the higher population and presence of many more international language schools and institutes.
Ho Chi Minh City has had a fierce comeback post-Vietnam War, which has created a constant need for English teachers in particular. Sitting near the mouth of the Mekong Delta and amidst glorious jungle hideaways, you'll know adventure is never really far away as you teach English in Vietnam. Salary typically ranges from $800-$1000 USD on average—but if you are teaching English in Vietnam without a degree or without TEFL, you can expect it to be lower.
In the second-largest city in Vietnam, Hanoi, international language schools are continuously popping up and teaching experience is gradually becoming less of a requirement. There’s a lot of Chinese influence in this part of Vietnam, so not only do first-time teachers have plenty of opportunities to try their hand at teaching, but they can also have a dual international experience. While many pursue opportunities for teaching English in Hanoi, Vietnam to teenagers or the younger Vietnamese population, adults in Hanoi are actively searching for English language learning opportunities to help them develop their career too.
If a teeming metropolis isn’t for you, there are several other spots, like Hue and Hoi An in southern Vietnam, that offer teaching jobs near the rainforest and beaches of the Vietnam. For a mountainous teaching experience in quieter, more rural villages, head north to the Thai Nguyen province where cultural traditions are upheld and a variety of teaching options are available.
When you teach English abroad in Vietnam, you are spoilt for choice with placements. Private schools and English language centers are the primary institutions in which teachers will find formal placements. The demand for English language learning here is high, and ESL jobs in Vietnam are available year round in almost every city and town.
International schools can be more difficult to secure placement in because requirements and experience are a great deal higher. But, the benefits and salaries will match, so teachers with considerable experience shouldn’t be discouraged from going after these placements. Teaching in a formal institution typically requires a bachelor’s degree and TEFL/TESOL certification. Some programs include training and certification.
Teachers can set up multiple teaching gigs spread out at a variety of English language centers, or commit to a full time contract at a private school. If the former is your route, you might also want to consider private tutoring as a way to earn and save while teaching in Vietnam. Rates for private tutoring range from $10-$30 USD an hour based on teaching experience. Individuals who teach in Vietnam can expect to work anywhere from 25 to 40 hours a week. In some cases, only half of that time is spent in front of students teaching lessons, and the other half of work hours are spent planning and preparing for lessons.
If you don’t speak Vietnamese, you can still find plenty of teaching placements in Vietnam. However, if you take the time to learn some Vietnamese, it will definitely help you navigate the classroom and gain greater respect from fellow teachers and students alike.
Your teaching English in Vietnam salary will be pretty standard. You can expect anywhere around $10-$30 USD hourly depending on your placement. First-time teachers will likely sit on the lower end of the pay scale. To receive the greatest benefits and higher pay, teachers will need a TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificate and teaching experience.
Since the cost of living is lower in Vietnam, the monthly salary teachers receive will be enough to afford a very comfortable lifestyle (even in a big city like Hanoi) and provide some extra money to save for later (or more spring rolls). Depending on where you find ESL jobs in Vietnam, you might not have to commit to teaching 40 hours a week, and can use that extra time to travel. Luckily, Vietnam offers really efficient and cost effective transportation. Be brave and buy your own motorbike to cruise on!
If you’re looking for extra perks, Vietnamese schools don’t offer much. Most teaching jobs in Vietnam are not likely to cover your accommodation, flight, or insurance. However, many employers will help you secure a visa or work permit, they just won’t take care of the fees attached.
Individuals who find English teaching jobs in Vietnam will most often need to secure their own housing in an apartment, unless a teaching job happens to provide housing. In many cases, if you ask your employer or placement providers, they will have suggestions or help you find accommodation.
Don't forget to coordinate your teaching English in Vietnam work visa—this can usually be done with support from your school placement or the agency you're working with. You will need a work visa to teach in Vietnam and to be able to secure housing. Sometimes the visa process can be difficult if you’re trying to find placement on your own. Many teachers who have worked in Vietnam in the past came in with a business visa. This is no longer a viable option. Coming in on a tourist visa is an option because you are able to convert the visa to a work permit or business visa within Vietnam. Unlike many other countries, you’re not required to leave Vietnam and come back on a new visa when you utilize teach English in Vietnam programs.
Don't go in blindsided: Read plenty of teaching English in Vietnam reviews before you settle on the program that will give you the experience you want. Consider your budget, goals, and salary.
First-time Teachers: Language schools are the most reliable and offer the most support. Other teaching placements in Vietnam may not be as suitable for beginners.
Bonuses: Some language schools will offer overtime pay and cover travel expenses.
Contracts and Travel: Working at a language school implies a contract, which commits teachers to a certain amount of teaching time a month. This can inhibit outside travel opportunities.
Diverse Classes: It can be challenging to work with students who are not all at the same level. Some teachers will pass students who are not ready for a heavier or more advanced workload simply to save face.

I loved the experience and all the people I got to meet as a result of it, it was so nice to connect with people in all stages of life but as a trainee teacher and also within the schools itself, everyone was really lovely and we got to learn so much about Thai culture which was really fun

Gotoco made teaching in Thailand really easy to get into. The team was friendly and organised, the training prepared me well, and I always felt supported along the way. Teaching the kids was a lot of fun, and the cultural trips were a great extra. It pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. I'd happily recommend it to anyone thinking about teaching abroad
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
I spent two weeks in Vietnam with Gotoco and had a really positive experience! My group taught English in a preschool, which was really rewarding and gave me valuable classroom experience. We also took part in a cultural exchange with a local university, which helped me develop my public speaking skills. Outside of teaching, I really enjoyed the day trips around Da Nang and trying food at local restaurants with the other participants. The staff were lovely and supportive throughout. Having our flights booked for us was especially helpful, and they were flexible with my plans to travel independently before and after the programme. Overall, I really enjoyed my time in Vietnam and would definitely recommend the experience!

Teaching in Thailand for 2 weeks was awesome. It's the perfect blend of travel and tourism. You have the opportunity to see the country's more well-known destinations, but also it's far out areas where tourists don't normally travel. The teaching, as well, is so fun, it's such a unique way to interact and learn about another culture all whilst they are learning from you! Honestly can't think of any cons besides the 25 hours it takes to get to Thailand--but there's no way to end up in Thailand and have the experience without this so you just gotta stiff up a lip.
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
I really enjoyed meeting everyone on the programme and making new friendships. I think that we were all a very diverse crowd, coming from different backgrounds with different experiences, which made everything increadibly interesting and stimulating. I also think working with the kids was such an amazing and eye-opening experience. It gave me a great understanding of what it means to be a TEFL teacher and work with kids, and it has inspired me to continue looking for more TEFL opportunities that I hope to get involved in. I think that Thailand as a destination was perfect and is a place that I would definitely love to explore further in the future. I believe that the support given by Gotoco before my departure was amazing, especially with the quick, thorough and reassuring responses that I received. I think that the structure was also well thought out, with each day consisting of something new with different events and activites. I appreciate the guidance and the support I was also given throughout the trip as well.
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
I had such an amazing experience with gotoco in Thailand! The whole experience of teaching English to the children was so rewarding. They were so excited to learn and it was honestly so nice seeing how quickly we built a connection with them. I also met some amazing people and made some really good friends along the way. Outside of teaching, we got to experience so much of Thai culture, from cooking classes and exploring temples to night markets, boat trips and trying loads of amazing food. Everything was really well organised and I always felt supported throughout the programme. I’m genuinely so glad I decided to apply and got the chance to do something completely different. It was such a unique experience and I’d 100% recommend gotoco. I really hope I get to do another programme with them in the future!

This summer I took part in Gotoco's TEFL programme in Vietnam. The TEFL course was amazing as we had the opportunity to teach multiple age groups over the 3 weeks and I have overall become more confident with my teaching. The coordinators additionally gave us classes in how to teach which I think really prepared us. Overall the living conditions were great; the house was lovely, and the food was also good. The location of Da Nang was also a very nice place to spend 3 weeks, and on the weekends we had daytrips and throughout our coordinators took us to various cultural experiences.

The Further Afield initiative of Goto-CO is an experience I would recommend for the following reasons. They take care of and book flights (with great flexibility). The organisers and people behind it are friendly, outgoing, and on top of it all. The experience combines work and leisure.
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
From a wonderful team and great people, to a new experience and the opportunity to explore Thailand and its culture, this was such an amazing programme. Although it was only a 2 week programme, I’m so glad that I came. I learned so much and met so many amazing people. Before I went I didn’t expect there to be so many cultural activities planned for us which was a really nice surprise. We learned how to make traditional Thai desserts and dishes, visited many temples and got to see so much more during our free time :) I would recommend Gotoco to anyone who wants to try something new, meet new people, experience a different culture, and see what teaching English abroad is like.

I was able to spend 3 1/2 weeks in Vietnam, and it was amazing. Firstly, the cohort I was with was incredible; I have made some lifelong friends from that group. Secondly, being able to travel to my first Asian country and essentially live like a local was an experience I believe every young person should have. The school I worked at were amazing, and the teachers were unbelievably welcoming. Vietnam itself is such a beautiful country with beautiful sights.

This programme is an easy way to introduce someone to travelling abroad, teaching English as a foreign language and gaining independence. The opportunity gives someone enough independence but also has a safety net in case you need advice or help in a matter. I have gained valuable skills that I can use in a new career, and it has given me insight into a career where I would teach abroad. I have gained the ability to create and use teaching resources, which would allow me to continue to teach if I wished. I went on a 5-week Rural thialnd programme and the highlight was the students and the meaningful impact we all had on them in a short period of time. From the very first day, we were welcomed by the students and were made to feel like respected teachers. Students were receptive and understanding of the language barriers we faced. Students were happy and wanted to constantly learn and practice English. Those same students continue to contact us and have a strong desire to practice English and get better. Another highlight was the friends I made on the programme. It was initially daunting knowing I would be stuck living with strangers, but I can proudly say I made lifelong friends, and we built connections with each other almost immediately.

It was my first time travelling abroad independently and Gotoco made the entire experience unforgettable and incredibly stress-free. They had considered every detail on what the participants would need and want to have a good experience both at the school and within the area that we were living in. I joined the 1 month programme and had a lot of fun making life-long friends, getting to know the locals and teaching the kids. Doing this programme with Gotoco just ensured that I was able to live and work in Thailand comfortably and stress-free. I would highly recommend joining one of their programmes to anyone wanting to travel, live and work abroad!
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
Did the 2 week funded trip in Thailand and it was fantastic! Teaching, travelling, meet new people from Thailand and from the Uk too! The biggest highlight for me was the combination of teaching, travelling and meeting people from completely different backgrounds. I really enjoyed being able to experience Thailand beyond the usual tourist destinations, particularly staying in smaller towns and getting a feel for everyday life there. The teaching itself was also a great experience. Even though it could be challenging at times, having to adapt lessons to students with very different levels of English really helped me develop my communication, creativity and confidence. Seeing the students become more engaged as the programme went on was particularly rewarding. Teaching was fun and came naturally to me. Not as hard as i thought the students are well behaved and are genuinely happy to have a natuve English speaker as a teacher. The social side was another major highlight. Having a group of other participants to travel, explore and spend time with made the whole experience much more enjoyable, and I think the programme does a good job of creating that sense of community. Met plenty of people from uk too so the social side was great too!

I’m really glad I joined Gotoco’s Thailand programme. It was a great opportunity to travel, meet some lovely people and experience teaching English. I especially enjoyed spending time with the students and experiencing the local culture. The financial support with flights, accommodation, meals and transport made a big difference too. Overall, a very memorable experience that I would recommend.

Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
I really loved and appreciated the positive attitude from the teachers and the children at my school, always making us feel included and cared for. The people and friends we made along the programme will be some friends for life; we even went on holiday together in the weeks break for the King's birthday! This experience has definitely made me more adaptable and flexible. With Thai schools and teachers, anything can change instantly and I struggled to acclimatise to that aspect at first but then I really got into that attitude during my time there. It has definitely made me more resilient (and stress-free!)
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
My Thailand trip with Gotoco was incredible! I would recommend the scheme because it is a great way to experience a new country while learning and growing in an employability sense. It's a great balance of work and fun that I would love to experience again someday.
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
I believe this programme is a great opportunity for anyone who feels lost, uncertain, or unsure about their career path. Many people reach a point where they are questioning their future, looking for direction, or trying to gain experience that will help them make informed decisions. This programme provides a unique opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone, challenge yourself, and gain valuable practical experience while contributing to a meaningful project. One of the most rewarding aspects of the programme is that it allows participants to make a positive impact while also benefiting personally and professionally. In exchange for your time, effort, and commitment, you receive funding, practical experience, and the opportunity to develop a wide range of transferable skills. These skills include communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, and confidence, all of which are highly valued in any career. For me, the experience was much more than simply teaching English. It gave me the opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds, learn about a new culture, and gain a better understanding of how education and teaching are approached in another country. Building relationships with local children, teachers, and fellow participants was incredibly rewarding and helped me develop both my interpersonal skills and cultural awareness. I think it is important for anyone considering this programme to understand its purpose and expectations before joining. While the programme offers many benefits, participants should not view it solely as a way to travel or receive funding. The real value comes from being actively engaged, contributing positively to the project, and embracing the learning opportunities that arise throughout the experience. Having realistic expectations and a willingness to contribute will help ensure a more meaningful and rewarding experience. It is also important to keep an open mind throughout the programme. Things may not always go exactly as planned, and there may be challenges along the way. However, these challenges often become some of the most valuable learning experiences. Being flexible, adaptable, and willing to learn from different situations can help participants grow both personally and professionally. I would encourage future participants to take the opportunity to share their own experiences and knowledge while remaining open to learning from others. Every interaction offers a chance to gain a new perspective, better understand different cultures, and develop greater confidence in your own abilities. The programme creates an environment where mutual learning and personal growth can thrive. Overall, I would highly recommend this programme to anyone who is looking for direction, meaningful experience, or an opportunity to challenge themselves. It not only provides practical skills and valuable experience but also encourages personal development, cultural understanding, and self-confidence. If you approach the programme with the right mindset, a positive attitude, and an openness to learn, it can be a truly enriching and life-changing experience.

Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
An unforgettable, genuinely life-changing experience from start to finish! The Gotoco team made the entire process—from the initial onboarding and visa guidance to the camp placement itself—straightforward, clear, and immensely supportive throughout. Teaching and working with the students in China was incredibly rewarding, the cultural immersion was second to none, and getting to explore, travel, and connect with fantastic people made it a summer I'll never forget. If you're considering teaching abroad, I can’t recommend Gotoco enough. 10/10!
Program: Teaching Internship (with TEFL Certificate) in Asia & Europe
The program was for me, very rewarding were I felt included from the very moment stepping into the experience. The summer camps provided lively, energetic, interactive learning platform and has provided a great stepping stone for my next step in the teaching area. I’ve already been accepted to another program in February 2027 and with the help of TEFL I’ll have many more opportunities open for me to explore.
