Known as “The Switzerland of South America” for its peaceful culture, Uruguay is nestled between South America’s two titans, Argentina and Brazil. The capital, Montevideo, is quickly becoming a travel destination for its thriving cultural scene, including rich architecture, sandy beaches, plazas, shops, museums, and restaurants. Known as one of the “coolest” and “most chilled-out” cities, Montevideo reflects the casual attitude that Uruguayans take towards life. Its location makes it convenient to travel to nearby regions such as Buenos Aires and Brazil, providing a variety of opportunities for day trips around the country. Experience this emerging hidden gem firsthand and have a unique opportunity to study and explore the Spanish, Italian, and African cultural influences throughout Uruguay. The Montevideo program offers several diverse academic areas, including the Spanish language, Latin American studies, gender studies, agro-business, viticulture, and more. The host university, known as ORT, is the first and largest private university in the country, with 10,000 students.

Montevideo contains over half of Uruguay’s three million people. The capital has primarily Spanish and Italian heritage and boasts abundant cultural and entertainment attractions, including museums, cinemas, theaters, exciting nightlife, and fascinating architecture. With its wide, clean beaches and charming Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo moves to its own distinctive beat. Students in Montevideo take courses alongside Uruguayan students at one of three local universities: the Universidad Católica del Uruguay, the Universidad de la República, or the Universidad ORT. Students can pursue courses in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. There is also the opportunity to participate in intentionally designed tracks in architectural studies or the arts (including studio arts, graphic design, music, and dance opportunities). All students complete a writing course designed exclusively for program participants, and many students also pursue internships. In Montevideo, students are placed into local homestays.
