Whether in a city or in the countryside, it was absolutely breathtaking.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?&nbsp;</h3><p>I was the only person from my university doing the study abroad option, which forced me to meet new people and really put myself out there.</p><figure class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="display: inline;" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/img-4994-1517372053-1551845099.jpg" alt="Kristianna Williams at the Royal Mile in Edinburgh"><figcaption class="caption"><p>The Royal Mile in Edinburgh</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?&nbsp;</h3><p>Local staff would communicate regularly with us in person or through email and would go with us on any outings or excursions.&nbsp;</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?&nbsp;</h3><p>I probably would've packed less! :) I could easily purchase anything I needed in town, so I didn't need to bring as much stuff with me.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.&nbsp;</h3><p>On a class day, I would usually stop by the cafe to get a pastry and an americano. I'd be in class for a few hours and then afterwards go on a run around our beautiful campus. Our campus was on the side of a hill (or what I would call a mountain), so it was a great leg workout. The weather was also perfect for exercising outside. Other days would be our class excursions, so on those days we would leave early in the morning and go to wherever our excursion was (in my case it was usually a city). We'd spend most of the morning and some of the afternoon on an excursion and get back in the early evening to relax and hang out.</p><figure class="awesome-image left-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/img-6393-1517372055-1551845127.jpg" alt="Eilean Donan Castle"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Eilean Donan Castle is breathtaking in the evening!</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?&nbsp;</h3><p>When I had free time, I tried to plan trips around Scotland. Before I went over to Scotland I thought I would get to see all of Great Britain. I realized once I got there that there was so much to do in Scotland and I didn't have enough time to see the rest. I traveled to the Highlands one weekend, rode the Jacobite Steam Train (the train used in the Harry Potter movies), explored Edinburgh and Glasgow (two major Scottish cities), and experienced the Highland Games in Aberdeen (the best way to see traditional Scottish culture).</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?&nbsp;</h3><p>My accommodation was wonderful. I had a small room with my own bathroom, a desk, lots of cabinets, and a window overlooking the loch. There were five rooms in our flat, and we all shared a kitchen and living room. This worked out perfectly, as we all had different schedules and the kitchen was rather large. We had to buy and make our own food, which was actually really nice and the grocery store was just a bus ride away. I was also comforted by the fact that we needed key cards to get into our flat and our room, and there was always security at the front desk if we needed anything.</p><figure class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="display: inline;" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/img-8350-1517372056-1551845161.JPG" alt="St. Andrews, Scotland"><figcaption class="caption"><p>St. Andrews is still beautiful in the freezing rain. Make sure to have a raincoat!</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?&nbsp;</h3><p>Make sure you have extra spending money for travel, food, and gifts, and make sure you have room in your suitcase for all those gifts! I would just say that having an open mind and no set plans is the best way to have a good experience. Things will get changed, stuff will happen, and you just have to go with it. If you go with that mindset, I guarantee you'll have an incredible experience.</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?&nbsp;</h3><p>I met wonderful friends and have incredible memories that I will forever look back on. I am also itching to go back and see more of the UK as well as the world! This experience has fueled my desire to travel even more.</p><h3>Would you recommend <a href="https://www.goabroad.com/providers/cisabroad" title="" data-contentlink="78381">CISabroad</a> to others? Why?&nbsp;</h3><p>Yes! They handle all the plans and details you don't want to deal with, and it's a great opportunity to be independent.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>It has always been my dream to travel the world and the opportunity to study abroad was one I couldn't pass up. I wanted to meet new people and experience different cultures and going abroad did exactly that for me.</p><h3>Why did you choose CISabroad's program in Scotland? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I chose to go to the University of Stirling in Scotland because my family is from Scotland and I wanted to experience the culture and explore the country my ancestors lived in. There is so much beauty and history within this country and being able to experience it was an experience I'll never forget.</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>My experience abroad was unique because most people don't choose Scotland as their first place to go so I didn't know anyone going abroad with me. I received many emails from staff saying that they are here for me if I ever needed anything and that was wonderful because it really made me feel welcome and accepted into the school. We also were all given an advisor to help us if we ever had any questions.</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?</h3><p>Ultimately I wish I would have studied abroad the entire year rather than just a semester.&nbsp; It goes by so quickly and you think you have all this time to do absolutely everything you want to, but often times you have to pick what's the most important on your list of things to do and see. I'm grateful for my semester but I would have loved to stay longer.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program. <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>A typical day at the University of Stirling was starting my day by waking up and looking out my bedroom window with the sudden rush coming over me that I was in Scotland, which would completely make my day. I would then get ready for my lectures, which were not mandatory to go to, however the tutorials were. My walk to class was always the most breathtaking experience. I would leave my apartment, walk by a golf course, a castle, a loch and then eventually I would reach the academic building. After my tutorials were finished I often went to the school cafe to grab myself a honeycomb hot chocolate along with a cheese toastie, which in American terms is just a grilled cheese. After that I would walk back to my apartment and hangout in my friend's suite. When it got later in the night me and all of the friends I made would take the bus into the city and enjoy two of our favorite spots in Stirling: The Boozy Cow and the Kilted Kangaroo. I also tried to do as much traveling as I could so when I had a long weekend, which was almost every weekend, my friends and I would take the train to either Edinburgh or Glasgow and explore those cities. I also went on multiple excursions to different countries whenever I had the chance. While abroad I was able to visit France, Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, and Italy.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>My accommodation was fantastic! I lived on the Stirling campus in a group of buildings known as Alexander Court. Each building had three floors, which had about three suites on each floor. I lived in flat 30 with five other people. We each got our own room and there were three bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. My favorite thing about living in Alexander Court was the fact that all of my friends lived on the floor below me, so all I had to do was walk down the stairs and go into their flat and hangout. When you consider four months as a time period you imagine that as a long time, however being abroad you're often going to fill your time with friends and excursions, which will make your time fly by. Enjoy absolutely every minute of it. Also I highly recommend saving a good amount of money so that when you go abroad you'll have the chance to do a lot of fun things. There are a lot of free activities but it's always good to have money so that you don't feel like you can't do certain things.</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life? <span style="white-space: pre;">	</span></h3><p>It's been a year since I've been in Scotland and I miss being abroad every single day. I'm always reminded of memories and experiences that I had in Scotland and I just hold onto those feelings I get so tightly. I have such a greater appreciation for the world now and am constantly faced with this feeling of wanderlust.</p><h3>Would you recommend CISabroad study abroad in Scotland to others? Why? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I would 100% recommend studying abroad in Scotland. It was the most magical and amazing experience of my life. I miss it everyday and would do anything to go back. I went through CISabroad and they were so incredibly helpful throughout the application process and once I was over there. They set up weekend excursions while in Scotland and are there for you whenever you had any questions. It was an affordable experience that I urge anyone and everyone who has the opportunity to go abroad to do it.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I was inspired by my stepdad actually. I was going through a hard time medically and was unsure about what I wanted to do for a career. He had enlightened me with knowledge of the travel and tourism industry and when I transferred schools and had chosen my major, I realized how much I loved meeting new people and exploring new places! I had always wanted to go to the British Isles, so I made it a priority to expand my horizons across the pond!</p><h3>Why did you choose CISabroad? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>There weren't many study abroad programs that incorporated travel/tourism and destination management, however when I saw there was a program located in Scotland! I was SOLD!</p><h3>What was your favorite part about Edinburgh? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Oh, that's a hard one! I could go on forever, but all in all, there is not one thing that I did not love about being in Edinburgh! It made me feel complete; in a way I have never felt before! I will say that I really loved how in such a big city, it also felt like I was in a small town where everyone knew everyone! I also was always fascinated that there were so many different cultures everywhere I went. I could be listening to a Scottish man one minute (not understanding anything), hear a Russian family a few minutes later, then be speaking French to a person on the bus the next! There was enough hustle and bustle to keep you entertained, but if you needed a break from it all, the coast and mountains were only a short bus ride away. I also loved being able to live in the festival capital of Europe because there was always something new to learn and experience around every cobblestoned corner.</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Jeanna, my site director, always was there when I needed her! There was a time when I was spending a weekend in Portugal and ended up in the emergency room. I studied my Senior year of college so I experienced life abroad late in the game. I would have liked to have made sure to join in on the many clubs that were available to me. I had signed up for the colleges surf club, however I was sick the first few times they trained. That and their schedule didn&rsquo;t always match with mine academically. Volunteering is another thing I would have enjoyed throughout Scotland, however my Visa stated that only travel and study were permitted.</p><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program. <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>A typical day for me would be to wake up and have my daily green tea with peanut butter oatmeal.; some things never change for me. Depending on the time and day I would then walk down the canal way to the bus stop with my fellow friends and classmates, and then travel about 10 minutes to campus. After classes I would usually spend time journaling about the previous day then proceed to make my way down to Flat 1. We would either spend hours chatting it up as well as planning trips for the upcoming weekend or take on the town with the whole Dingo Squad!</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="https://www.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto4-lisieski-1507782146.jpg" alt="Pentland Hills, near Edinburgh, Scotland"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Pentlands Hike</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>When I wasn't walking around the city taking in all that was surrounding me (which some of the time was rain), I would be in the park either reading or writing. I did my fair share of people watching as well! Princes St, The Royal Mile, and The Gardens were some main spots for that. I also did a good bit of hiking and taking the bus to random places to explore outside the city, such as the Leith and the Pentlands.&nbsp; I loved that in the city I could go out and learn something new everyday, so that&rsquo;s what I tried to do as much as possible.</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>I lived in a flat with six other girls. I have never lived with so many people in one area but I loved it! We each had our own room (HUGE might I add), our own bathroom, closet, full desk and all! We also had a grand kitchen, attached to a living area that could fit A LOT of people.&nbsp; We always used them for family dinners that we hosted.</p><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>Know that even though Scotland is a country where the main language is English, the accent is very heavy and they use a lot of slang! There were many times where I had no clue what people were saying, it almost sounded like a different language. I need to just take things as they come and keep a positive attitude through all situations! I also realize that I shouldn't be afraid to take chances and go out of my comfort zone because great things can come from it. I think about my experience almost everyday and I yearn to go back. Living abroad for only three months taught me more about the world as well. It dissipated a lot of stereotypes that Americans may have on other countries. My experience truly opened my eyes to other ways of life and made me want to explore more of this beautiful Earth.</p><h3>Would you recommend CISabroad? Why? <span style="white-space:pre">	</span></h3><p>YES, I would 110% recommend. Everyone is so nice and willing to help! Not only are the people in the program helpful and caring, but the people of Edinburgh, and Scotland in general, are just as great! As quiet and timid as the people of the U.K. may seem at first, they truly are very talkative and sweet. Once they get talking with someone you can't get them to stop...I LOVE IT!</p>

<h3><span class="s1"><b>Why did you decide to sign up for a program through the Institute of Study Abroad at Butler University?</b></span></h3>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">When I was looking at study abroad programs, I had two specific requirements: I wanted to study in a city that I knew nothing about and I wanted to intern somewhere. I ended up choosing Scotland because it had the parliamentary program and not the other way around. This specific program was perfect because it allowed me to intern abroad, in the Scottish parliament, while also studying at a world-renowned university, the University of Edinburgh. The parliamentary internship program met all of my requirements and allowed me to fall in love with a city that I previously had known nothing about.</span></p><div class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="" src="http://cdn2.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto3-alagia-1463036142.jpg" alt="

<h3><span class="s1"><b>What was your favorite part about living in Edinburgh? </b></span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><span class="Apple-tab-span">	</span></span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">My favourite part about Edinburgh was how accessible everything was. It is the type of city where you can walk absolutely everywhere. It also has a certain charm about it that you read about in fairytales. Regardless of the weather, Edinburgh always looks beautiful and the architecture is simply stunning. It is a capital city with the charm of a small town.</span></p>
<h3><span class="s1"><b>What made your experience abroad unique? </b></span></h3>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Interning at Parliament was the most unique part of my semester, and it definitely impacted my time abroad overall. Interning in Parliament allowed me to see first-hand the issues that are impacting the citizens of Scotland, and this allowed me to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the city I was in. Thanks to my time in Parliament, I learned more about Scotland than I ever would have been able to in a classroom. Because of this, I found myself itching to get back to Edinburgh whenever I was travelling in a different city.</span></p>
<h3><span class="s1"><b>How did the IFSA-Butler staff support you throughout your program? </b></span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><span class="Apple-tab-span">	</span></span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">IFSA-Butler is the most fantastic program provider anyone could have ever asked for. The team in the U.S. made sure that we had all the information that we needed before departure, and the transition from them to the team on the ground in Scotland was smooth and seamless. They made sure that we always knew they were there if we needed help with absolutely anything but, at the same time, they made sure that we had our space to make the most out of our experience. They had drop-in hours every week that we could go to if we wanted and it was reassuring to know that they truly cared about our well-being.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Additionally, there are two trips that are pre-paid for in our tuition, and they always made sure that those were really exciting experiences and ones that would be more difficult for us to organize on our own.</span></p>
<h3><span class="s1"><b>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently? </b></span></h3>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">I wish I had integrated myself into the university a little more. <h3><span class="s1"><b>What did a typical day look like for you? </b></span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><span class="Apple-tab-span">	</span></span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Our classes all took place in the first five weeks of the program, and they were held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to noon. Once we started in Parliament, the typical work week was Tuesday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.</span></p>
<h3><span class="s1"><b>What did you enjoy doing in your free time? </b></span></h3>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">On my free weekends, I really enjoyed travelling around Scotland, as well as other parts of Europe. When I had free time during the week, I enjoyed hiking around Edinburgh and trying out new pubs and coffee shops!<br><br></span></p>
<h3><span class="s1"><b>Describe your accommodation in Edinburgh.</b></span></h3><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><span class="Apple-tab-span">	</span></span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Our accommodations were the only thing that was sub-par about my experience. Having my own room was really nice, but the accommodation itself was not great. We were in six-person flats with mostly other kids from our program. The rest of the building was filled with first-years at Uni or other international students. Each flat has two bathrooms and a kitchen and each person had his/her own room. The main problem was that there were more than 300 students in the building and only three washing machines.</span></p>
<h3><span class="s1"><b>Any words of wisdom for future students interested in studying abroad?</b></span></h3>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Go in with an open mind. I left all preconceived notions about Scotland and study abroad behind in America and went in with absolutely no expectations. Because of this, I was completely blown away by how much I fell in love with Scotland.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Always expect the unexpected. Scotland may not seem as sexy of a study abroad city as Barcelona or Rome, but don't compare it to other cities. <h3><span class="s1"><b>Did your study abroad experience meet your expectations? What do you appreciate most about it? </b></span></h3>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">This semester has been everything I needed it to be, and more. When I arrived in Scotland, I was running (maybe sprinting) away from my tiny 2000-person college. To say I was ready for a change of scenery would be the understatement of the century. I had no idea what to expect, but I knew that I needed this more than anything. <br><br></span></p><blockquote><span class="s1">
Scotland turned out to be everything I needed and more.</span></blockquote>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Edinburgh taught me to find the beauty in even the darkest days. Actually, this is really not an exaggeration because 90 percent of the days we were here were extremely dark (literally). Edinburgh showed me that culture shock is the best thing that can happen because it forces you out of your comfort zone and opens your eyes to how different cultures live.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Scotland showed me that you can put 20 people together (who have very little in common, I might add) and have them become one, big (dysfunctional) family, because they are bonded by the one thing that brought them all abroad in the first place: a desire to experience something bigger than themselves. Studying abroad completely reshaped the way I look at the world and the ways in which I approach all aspects of my life.</span></p>
<h3><span class="s1"><b>Would you recommend IFSA-Butler to others? Why? </b></span></h3>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">I cannot recommend this program and IFSA-Butler enough. This program changed my life and has given me a second home in Scotland. I have never felt as supported by a group of people as I did by the IFSA-Butler team. Studying abroad is a life-changing experience, but interning abroad is what allows you to truly connect with the city that you are in. Choose Scotland (specifically Edinburgh) and choose IFSA-Butler because you will have an unforgettable experience.</span></p>
