Program Options
Home to some of the oldest and top ranked universities in the United Kingdom and an abundance of like minded international students, it may seem like an easy decision to choose to study abroad in Glasgow. However, with so many options to choose from, it may be difficult to know exactly which one suits you.
Popular subjects to study in Glasgow. Many students come to Glasgow in search of courses related to medicine, most likely due to the University of Glasgow's reputation for medical programs. Bibliophiles will be delighted by its literature programs (and what better place to study some Robert Burns than Scotland itself?), and anyone trying to master English as a second language will find many students on a similar path when studying in Glasgow. Just don't rely on Shrek's Scottish accent as inspiration for your oratory final...
Short term and summer programs vs. long term programs. Summer study abroad programs in Scotland are a popular choice for those who don’t have time to commit to a full year or semester. This is great, but it does mean you’ll have less time to perfect your bagpiping skills while admiring your new kilt (or studying, teehee). Being able to commit to longer programs means being able to enjoy the many perks of Scotland, such as, building lifelong relationships, traveling to European countries, developing an obsession with deep fried Mars Bars (seriously, it’s a thing). Push yourself to study in Glasgow for as long as possible to benefit from this experience.
Attending universities vs. other program types. This may be another conundrum you face when trying to decide which course and city to choose from. Some study abroad programs in Glasgow are given through the Glasgow universities directly, whereas others are provided by third party companies. Both of these options have their advantages and disadvantages. Studying through the universities directly will allow you to meet other like minded international and local students as you study alongside each other. Studying with a third party company, however, will mean that your classmates will also be from the US, and your classes will be given by American faculty members. A thorough search relating your specific academic and personal needs is advisable before you study abroad in Glasgow or consider Glasgow universities.
Student Life
You’ll always be surrounded by homely vibes in Glasgow, whether that be because of the warm nature of the locals, or the food options. Miss momma’s cooking? Unfortunately nothing will ever compare to that, but with the plethora of restaurants, you’ll find something to tickle your fancy! Moreover, Glasgow is one of the cheapest places to live in in the United Kingdom. Yay for more spending money on haggis! We mean, uhm, adorable tea cups.
Not sure about how to apply for a visa or even which visa to get? The rules can be different depending on which country you’re coming from. Your course provider will have all the information on how to apply.
Travel Tips
If you are offered haggis, try it! Most Scottish people (unless they’re vegetarian) ADORE this national dish and will feel offended if you foul-mouth it. Even if you feel like it won’t be your cup of tea, give it a go! Who knows, you may end up with a taste for sheep’s guts!
Brush up on the local lingo. Glasgow has many expressions that may leave you scratching your head at — like, ‘’Geein me the boak!’’ — used when something is making you feel very ill. Another one to look out for is ‘’greetin’’ — used when someone feels rather annoyed. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of happy slang, too!
Take advantage of Glasgow’s connections with other cities. It’s so easy to visit Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee (the list is really endless) by train. If you have time, venture out to the remote parts of Scotland. Popping into the local Visitor or Tourist Information will provide you with all the help you need. The only problem you’ll end up with is having too many places to choose from.

My favorite experience ever!
December 21, 2024by: Jamie LaCourse - United StatesProgram: Study Abroad in Glasgow, Scotland with WorldStrides
Studying abroad in Glasgow, Scotland as an American student was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Living amongst other American ISA students allowed me to feel comfortable living in a new country as we were all going through the experience together. While my ISA roommates became my best friends, I also made friendships with other international students that lived in my building, were in my classes, and I met on campus international student events. I felt supported and welcomed as an international student by ISA staff, Glasgow staff, Scotland residents, and by my friends! The planned ISA activities showed me different Scottish culture traditions and beautiful destinations in Scotland. I also had so much freedom and free time to travel with the friends I made to other countries in europe. My ISA advisor helped my friends and I find affordable flights and rooming and made sure we were taken care of to travel safely. My ISA advisor became a friend to me who was always there to support me! Taking classes in a different country felt scary to me at first, but ultimately benefited me as I learned how to gauge a new style of learning! This experience taught me so much that I am forever grateful for! I plan to visit Scotland in the future and recommend a trip or study abroad experience to anywho who has the privilege of going.

Exploration and discovery
February 26, 2019by: Chloe Dubisch - United StatesI had been planning to study abroad for several years when I finally attended the University of Glasgow in the fall of my Junior year. The experience was not what I had expected, as I found that traveling can be a very lonely experience, though prior to my departure that is what I had hoped to be; alone. However, once I arrived, I found that I could find friends at my most crucial junctions to help me through impossible situations like locating lost luggage, finding my way through the London Underground, and even packing up to go home. I also learned that I was capable of more than I had thought I was as my months abroad continued, and I discovered that most, if not all, of my fears proved unfounded or at least surmountable. I am grateful for the opportunities IFSA provided me to leave my comfort zone, think outside the box, and try new things.
Four months in Glasgow, Scotland
February 03, 2018by: Bronwyn - United StatesI had a great experience in Glasgow last semester. While the academic rigor of the program was much less than I was expecting, I was very glad that I ended up in this amazing city. The best part of my experience were the friends that I made with the other students using IFSA-Butler. The IFSA-Butler Scottish staff were so helpful, friendly, and really took the time to get to know all of us. They were a fantastic resource and my experience would not have been the same without them.

Studying abroad is amazing and so is Glasgow. Its completely a hidden treasure and ISA does a good job of making you feel like you have support. If nothing else, you get to see Edinburgh, Stirling and the Highlands. If you get the chance to explore Europe, do it! Its worth it! I had an impeccable time here.

Highly recommend this program in Glasgow! Having a program director available was helpful when trying to sort through necessary paperwork and deadlines during my stay. Also having a home base to meet up with other ISA students and go on tours together was a plus. Would definitely study abroad again if I didn't already graduate from college!

This program was excellent. I had plenty of guidance but also the opportunity to figure things out on my own. The regional director was always available and more than willing than help. I learned and experienced more than I ever thought possible, and I can't wait to go back!
Best decision of my life
May 04, 2016by: Hannah JStudying abroad at the University of Glasgow was one of the best decisions of my life and one I will cherish forever. The sports societies were accepting, the people were amazing, and the opportunities were vast. IFSA-Butler stayed with me through it all and made sure I was doing well. They also provided amazing excursions into Scotland.
