French Study Abroad Programs in Grenoble, France

I always wanted to go back to France and truly understand the meaning of life in another country. The only time traveling to France is to visit family on my mother’s side. So being able to visit the country on my own, in a part of France I have never visited, was an eye opening experience. Living by myself encouraged me to learn how to cook many different platters that I wouldn’t normally have, and pushed me to go out and explore the city. I had great support from the AIFS and CUEF team. Miranda Rea was amazing and helped me through some difficult times. She was encouraging and supportive and without her I believe I’d have a difficult time crossing the finish line. Class was difficult yet fun. I’ve learned so many different grammar rules and learned that even though you make some mistakes, “just know everyone makes mistakes in French. Even the French!”, Professor Kristof would say that to me when I’d make a common mistake that most francophone people do. However, I did catch on pretty quickly since I’m bilingual in French and English. In all, I had a wonderful experience and would recommend this organization to whoever is looking for an exciting learning experience in a different country!

I went abroad with AIFS in fall 2024 at Université Grenoble Alpes, and I was very attracted by the immersion and language-learning aspect that AIFS and the UGA program provided. I was placed in a wonderful homestay (with pets!), and I knew I could count on either my host or the AIFS resident director if I needed anything at all, from homework help to personal matters like homesickness. AIFS supported me--and my parents--during the entire registration and departure process. There were a lot of nerves going into the semester, but I was put at ease by how welcoming and helpful my host and resident director were, as well as the new friends I made at UGA. The AIFS resident director helped familiarize me with the city, and I got to experience so many aspects of French culture from cuisine to history to art while exploring Grenoble during the semester. My classes taught me a lot about French culture as well, including social and linguistic customs that you I never learned from a textbook. My French skills increased exponentially from the beginning of the semester to the end thanks to the immersive courses in UGA's CUEF program. Being abroad not only showed me how adaptable and confident I could become in my independence, but I also got to make friends from opposite ends of the world that I still stay in touch with today. I would recommend AIFS Abroad to any student looking to be challenged academically, is adventurous, and wants to go out of their comfort zone to explore the world and the culture and friendships it has to offer.

In the spring of 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to study at the University of Grenoble Alpes in Grenoble, France, with the assistance of Academic Programs International (API). This experience was a dream come true, marking a period of significant personal and academic growth. Upon arriving in France, I was overwhelmed with a sense of achievement. It wasn't just about stepping onto new soil; it was about realizing a long-held goal. The initial feeling of loneliness quickly evaporated as I met my fellow students and mentors at the Paris airport. We connected instantly, sharing stories and dreams. It was here that I met some of my best friends for life, which became a crucial part of my journey. We spent a week in Paris with API’s amazing mentors, who helped ease our transition into life abroad. Then, we took a train to Grenoble, where some of us were dropped off with our host families and others, like myself, at the student housing. Living on my own for the first time was both challenging and enlightening. It taught me to appreciate my own company and to embrace both the quiet moments and the bustling life around me. The academic challenges were no less daunting. My courses in French politics and mythology pushed me to my limits, especially as I grappled with language barriers that made simple discussions feel like monumental tasks. However, these hurdles ignited a determination to improve my French. By the semester's end, I was not only more fluent but also more confident in my ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. API’s support throughout this process was invaluable. They provided guidance and resources that helped me navigate the complexities of studying abroad, from academic support to cultural immersion activities. Studying abroad was transformative. It was not just about the lessons learned in classrooms but about the rich, immersive experiences that taught me about life, resilience, and the beauty of diverse cultures. This journey has deeply influenced my worldview and continues to shape my ambitions and goals. It was an adventure that challenged me, changed me, and, above all, enriched me deeply. I knew that I wanted to study abroad in Grenoble, France to learn about the French Resistance and wow! Being able to hike Le Bastille and visit the Resistance museum with API was amazing. I loved living with a host family and learning about the regional culture such as language, cuisine, and traditions. My API field trip would have to be when we visited Dijon together. I decided to attend Mass on Sunday morning and was welcomed by the local community. Truly, my API Grenoble experience was a cultural immersion and I am so grateful to have done this in my lifetime!

I grew so much in so many other ways outside of my language proficiency: I learned how to use public transport for the first time, had to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people, and solo travelled for the first time, which helped me grow in my confidence, and social and organizational skills.”

From the planning process to weeks after I came back CEA CAPA took care of me every step of the way. They made this experience super stress free which allowed me to be excited to study abroad. My studies abroad in Grenoble was the best experience of my life and I will never forget it.

Studying abroad in Grenoble was genuinely one of the most impactful experiences I have had during my time in college. I truly enjoyed getting to explore a new culture and learn about a city I had no knowledge of prior to taking part in my study abroad program. I think Grenoble is a great location for study abroad as it has a high international student population, plenty of restaurants and activities to explore, and a wide variety of subjects to study at different universities. As an engineering student, I was very excited to be living in a city that had such a focus on technology and scientific innovation. Additionally, my onsite CEA CAPA program coordinator contributed greatly to my experience abroad. I really appreciated having her support while adjusting to a new environment and getting to take part in the activities and excursions she planned. Overall, I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to explore a new environment as I think Grenoble is truly a unique city with something for everyone.

I found the peace in being alone. I didn’t feel the constant need to have someone near, yet I knew when I wanted people they were there. I found that the art of nothing, is so beautiful. There is so much nature surrounding us and people around every corner of the world we haven’t met. This world is vast and I want to discover so much more!

While I was in Grenoble, the best part of my experience was getting to know my host family. For four months I was with them, they treated me like one of there own. This meant drinking licorice-flavored pastis with grandfather, and attending the nephew's baptism, and so much more. They made me the season's meals consistently to make sure I had the most authentic experience of their lives that I possibly could, and they also took me to places all around the city. They took me along my long route that I would then take every day for school to make sure I was comfortable (and a good thing too because I had never been on public transportation before). But most of all, they took care of me simply as good family, making me feel at home away from home.

I completed the French Language and Culture program in Grenoble, France and the experience left me feeling appreciative, connected, and inspired. I think this program does a great job at offering the right amount of guidance and support and encouraging indpendence. Some of my favorite memories were the events and trips that AIFS plans which were educational but in the best way possible (I don't know how to explain this but you'll understand). I will be forever grateful that I chose this city as my second home and could not think of a better place to have immersed myself in French language and culture!

I have wanted to study abroad for years and studying abroad with AIFS in Grenoble, France exceeded my every expectation! The AIFS staff was incredible in supporting me from the moment I began the application process to the end of my program. The on-site Resident Director, Miranda, went above and beyond to make Grenoble feel like home the moment I arrived. I couldn't have chosen a better location! Everywhere you looked there was a stunning view of the French Alps and the locals were so kind and willing to help me learn French. The French Language and Culture Program also ensured that my academic goals were met while having fun in all the cultural activities and excursions AIFS offered. Some of my best memories were making crepes with the friends I made there and snowshoeing in the French Alps (the views were unforgettable!). My program was unfortunately cut short due to COVID-19 but I am grateful to AIFS for navigating the pandemic with students' health and safety as their top priority. I was able to finish my courses at home to still receive my credits and Zoom reunions with friends have been a must to relive those amazing few months. I wouldn't trade my experience with AIFS for anything and I highly recommend choosing AIFS for your adventure of a lifetime!

Going to Grenoble, France with AIFS was the best decision I could have made for myself. To start, the views were incredible - I loved that no matter where you would look, you would see mountains. Plus, I lived only a few minutes from the Bastille which made it super easy to get to if I wanted to take a hike. My experience would not have been the same if it weren't for my host family. They took me in as one of their own, and helped me practice my French even outside of the classroom. They even played games with me, such as scrabble, to help me practice! Being in the Intensive French Language program was, to say the least, intense. BUT, it helped me so much! I spent four hours a day learning and speaking French - I learned about so many different topics and it was very different from my French classes in the US, which is why I enjoyed it so much. My classmates were also amazing and they were from all around the world, forcing us to communicate in French. I met so many incredible people while I was abroad, and I hope that one day we can all reconnect and reminisce on our time together. AIFS was definitely the right program provider for me because everything was included - tuition, excursions, housing, food, etc. I didn't have to worry about whether I would have enough money to do this or that because the cost was laid out in front of me from the very beginning. If you are someone looking to study abroad, I could not recommend AIFS more! They will take care of you no matter what, so there is a sense of safety before you even arrive at your destination. There are also a lot of opportunities to go traveling on the weekends. I was able to go just about every weekend to a new country. AIFS allows for solo (or group) travel that doesn't interfere with any excursions or other activities, so use your time wisely, and travel to as many amazing places as possible. Take the leap to study abroad, you will not regret it!!

I got to go here in from the end of January to April. I really had an amazing time there is Grenoble. Ever since my first week there I really didn't know what to do after going to Université there in Grenoble. I eventually got in the swing of things and started to experience badminton, going around town for lunch on Saturdays, going to a church group for late night activities. I also loved all the excursions API took us on and got to see different cities. Also grenoble was just a breath of fresh air. I loved living in the mountains and taking the trams and other public transport to go around Grenoble. Walking was my main source of transportation. I also went to another country to visit another student who went to my college in the US. The mountains were amazing and I loved the feel of this city. There was so much to explore and the bastille which is a famous base for the military long ago was pretty cool and the view from the top were breathtaking. I liked my classes at the CUEF at Université de Grenoble Alps. I met a lot of nice people here beside the people in my program and got to connect with them and are now friends with them on social media platforms. I would love to visit Grenoble again and get to experience everything I got to do while I was there. I highly reccomend this program if you want to improve your language proficiency.

The thought of packing my bag and go to a new country that has a different culture and language from the ones I know was quite nerve-wracking. However, AIFS did a lot to help make the whole study abroad process goes as smoothly as possible. The admission counselor was quick to answer any questions and provided me all the information that I needed before departure. Once all the students arrived in Grenoble, my amazing resident director gave us a tour of the city, taught us how to use public transportation, and provided all the necessary information we need to navigate the new lifestyle. My time in Grenoble allowed me to meet amazing people and learn about a new culture. Thanks to AIFS, my overall study abroad experience was wonderful.

I love learning and I love traveling; I think I love traveling because it helps me learn-- the world is the best classroom after all. Enrolling in an AIFS program allowed me to live in France for a semester were I was able to immerse myself in courses and cultural experiences to propel me towards my personal, academic, and professional goals, and honestly it was one of the most profound and enriching life experiences I have ever had. I highly encourage students to take full advantage of whichever study abroad opportunities are available to them. I highly recommend applying for an AIFS program because AIFS provides an incredible all inclusive study abroad experience which offers a blissful balance between guidance and navigation through a challenging cross cultural experience as well as promoting an environment for young adults to indulge in their independence. AIFS made it easy for me to move across the Atlantic, take some classes, and to explore who I am. AIFS is renowned for their all inclusive programs which offer a variety courses, scholarships, flight packages, excursions, insurance, etc… BUT one of my favorite features about the AIFS package is the personal contacts who I felt truly cared about me getting the most out of my semester abroad. My admissions representative Erin reached out to me as soon as I started my application, she helped me secure me VISA and scheduled my flights for me. Once in France, my regional director Miranda helped me acclimate into my new host culture, introduced me to my loving host family, and translated for me at the doctors office. It was reassuring to know that there was always someone I could turn to if needed. Even after completing the program, the alumni coordinator Angela provided me with resources to help market my study abroad experience to future employers. AIFS connected me with a group of people who share my passion to learn and to travel and helped me create professional and supportive networks which continue to benefit me more than I ever imagined or expected from applying to international academic program. Thank you to the many people at AIFS who dedicate their time to help me and other students learn from the world.

AIFS in Grenoble was the perfect choice for me! Grenoble is such a nice little city! It's very easily walkable but also has great public transportation around the city center and outskirts. You can see mountains everywhere and it is absolutely beautiful, both in the winter when they're snowcapped, and in the spring when they're turning green with trees, and there are parks everywhere. It's not so big that it's overrun with tourists that deplete the beauty of the French culture, but there are many people that speak English if you're not very good with the language at the beginning (or middle or end of your trip). I thought most everything was fairly priced, and there are many different options at every price point for food, clothing, necessities, etc. AIFS set me up with a host mom who had breakfast and dinner for me 7 days a week, and it was a wonderful way to experience French cooking and learn some new tricks to use in my own kitchen, but also allowed me to try the different restaurants around Grenoble when I wanted. The opportunities that AIFS provides, like a cooking class, were great, but business students were not allowed to go on the excursions to other French cities that the AIFS French language and culture students went on (though the resident director there said she was working on changing that). Speaking of the resident director, she was absolutely wonderful!! She was such a sweet lady and ready to answer any questions we had, before and during our stay there. The classes at the business school were not terribly interesting and there is no flexibility in what classes you can take because of how the school's program is set up, but you take them with classes full of local and international students from all over the world. It was so interesting to learn about their home cultures while you're both trying to learn and live in a new one. The schedule also allowed quite a bit of time for traveling! I absolutely would recommend Grenoble as a study abroad destination, and I definitely want to go back!

I absolutely loved my semester in Grenoble and I wish I was still there. API was so helpful in every step of the process and made studying abroad amazing. They were very helpful with all the pre-departure preparation and provided lots of pre-departure materials to help you understand what to expect. Once I got there, Anna and Marie (onsite directors) were wonderful and helped us feel right at home! I never had any problems, but they were always there just in case. They also took us on some pretty awesome excursions like the Paris orientation, snowshoeing, a weekend in Nice, and more. My host family was absolutely wonderful and they made my time abroad ten times better. They took me into the mountains to show me where the Olympics were held, to eat fondue, and to meet the grandparents. My French was horrible when I got there but my host mom was so patient with me. The cat was an extra added bonus and was literally the fluffiest cat I had ever seen. I also really enjoyed all of my classes while I was there. All the professors were very understanding of our language level and never made us feel stupid for not know that much French. They always talked slowly and simply but without being condescending. The electives were also interesting and my favorite was the Mythology class. I can't say enough about how amazing API, Grenoble, the university, my host family, and everything else was!

My experience in Grenoble, France with CEA was beyond special, in so many different ways. Going to uni at GEM with so many international students, with so many diverse goals and backgrounds was truly broadening for me. On the other side of things, the weekly meetings that I had with my CEA group, many of whom were doing the culture program at UGA, really cultivated a sense of closeness and friendship among the group that we had. I got the chance to travel both with the CEA excursions, and my fellow GEM classmates. Being able to bond with other students in Paris, then being able to road-trip through the Cote d'Azur and experiment with local cuisine next, was one of my favorite parts of this program. I would highly recommend this program to anyone that's interested in having an incredible study abroad experience!

I was sold on Grenoble because of it’s location, nestled in the French alps, close to Switzerland, and a quick train ride to Paris and other well-known French towns. The school, Grenoble Ecole de Management, is a triple-accredited school, making it one of the rare business schools in France to achieve such a prestigious ranking. I had no ties to Grenoble prior to studying abroad here, and that was my favorite part. I wanted to test myself by putting myself in a completely foreign environment and fully immerse myself in a new culture. The fear of it all has led to me to meet the most international, outspoken, creative, and extraordinary group of individuals. I wasn’t expecting to meet anyone from California, let alone America, and I am pleasantly surprised that almost exactly that has happened. I fell in love with just about every aspect of life in Grenoble. Patrick was an amazing program advisor and took us on some of the best excursions around France. If you are lucky enough to go abroad and end up in Grenoble, take advantage of every experience you have there!
