A high-quality gap year experience

September 13, 2025by: Professor H. & C.Program: Chinese Gap Year in Taipei | Learn, Live, Grow

When our son wanted to take a year between high school and college, we knew that Chinese Gap Year at NTU would be perfect. As alumni of ICLP, we were confident that he would receive world-class language training from experienced and caring instructors. Our son has made great progress over the year thanks to the carefully structured curriculum and small class sizes. CGY also hosts a wide range of cultural activities and extraordinary quarterly field trips, all of which provide students with opportunities to learn about life in Taiwan from many perspectives. And of course, Taipei is one of the best (and safest) cities in the world! We’d recommend CGY to any family looking for a high-quality gap year experience.

We've made friends for life through CGY

In the few months after CGY has ended, we wanted to write some feedback and recommendation for CGY, especially because we've noticed the impact that CGY has had on our lives. The 6 months we spent with CGY were extremely memorable, and the knowledge we gained in that time broadened our horizons. All the cultural trips, lessons in history and politics, and outdoor excursions were extremely insightful and gave us many beautiful memories. We constantly think back to our time in Taiwan, where teachers and students were warm and friendly. We can confidently say that we've made friends for life through CGY, and 6 months on, we still actively make plans to meet up. Despite everyone coming from different cultural backgrounds, we all got along very well and it felt like a huge family. Additionally, all the teachers were very hardworking and dedicated, and without their help, we wouldn't have progressed so much in our studies. In the last 6 months, we have been able to realise how beneficial CGY was. We're now able to confidently start conversations with native Chinese speakers, we're more aware of Taiwanese and Chinese history and culture and are still in close contact with our former classmates. We are extremely thankful for the effort that you put in to make CGY possible, and we would highly recommend CGY to anyone who is interested in learning Chinese or just stepping out of their comfort zone. Thank you so much!
