American University in Bulgaria
About American University in Bulgaria
Established in 1991, the American University in Bulgaria is the first American-style, English language liberal arts educational institution in Eastern Europe. We are the product of a unique cooperative venture instituted with the support of the governments of the United States and Bulgaria, the Open Society Institute, and the University of Maine.
We are a privately funded, not-for-profit institution, financing educational activities through tuition, private donations, and grants. We opened our doors in September 1991, with a first-year class of 208 students and 16 full-time faculty members.
Since that year, the lively town of Blagoeygrad in southwest Bulgaria has transformed into a haven of academic excellence, creativity, and cultural diversity. Today, around 1,100 curious, committed, and talented students from more than 40 countries attend the university, a supportive and secure community, and immerse themselves in our world-class American liberal arts education.
