A Guide to Learning English in the United States
Where to Learn English in the U.S.
Whether you want to learn English in USA near the cosmopolitan zoo that is New York, the majestic Rocky Mountains in Colorado, or the sandy beaches of Southern California, the United States has everything. From sea to shining sea, there’s the perfect niche just for you.
East Coast: Home to the oldest communities of the New World, the East Coast offers some of the best architecture, food, and cultural experiences in the country. With Broadway and the best pizza outside of Italy, New York City is the dominant city of the region. If the crowds are too much for you, check out Harvard University (Havad to locals) near Boston and learn about historical America. Wanna study in a magic kingdom? World Disney World is in Orlando… as is Sea World, Universal Studios, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Central: While some dismiss the central United States as “flyover country,” they are missing out on some of the most dynamic areas of the country. Marvel at the Great Plains and enjoy the region’s hospitality. Chicago is a cradle for baseball at Wrigley Field, one of the oldest baseball stadiums still in use. For those that love nature, Utah, is home to Zion National Park and not too far from the Rocky National Park in Colorado and Yellowstone Park in Wyoming.
West Coast: From the rain-soaked cities of Washington to the sunny shores of California, the West coast of the U.S. is the soul of American optimism. Los Angeles allows you to brush shoulders with the titans of Hollywood at local restaurants, shopping, and sporting events. San Francisco is home to some of the largest and most influential tech companies in the world while Portland and Seattle offer burgeoning hipster scenes. While it rains often, the food trucks, craft beers, and indie music should keep your study sessions nice and cozy.
Popular Ways to Learn English in the U.S.
There are several ways to study English in USA. Whether you want a quiet classroom or a large university with students from all over the world, there are English language learning opportunities out there to fit your needs.
University Level Courses. A common way to take English language courses abroad is through a university. By enrolling in an American university, language students have the option to take many different types of classes and create a full understanding of both English and American culture. Intensive English programs at a university usually include regular grammar classes and art, history, politics, and humanities classes are taught in English as well. Some schools also have extracurricular incentives, such as language partners and cultural excursions to encourage learning outside the classroom. Plus, there's the perk of credit transfer back home!
Private Language Schools. The personalized lessons, flexible schedules, and often more-affordable cost make private language schools the natural fit for aspiring students. They focus on helping students learn the language as quickly and succinctly as possible. Some programs include cultural excursions and other activities.
Tutor. Sometimes, the personal touch of a private tutor is the best way to focus on learning English. Whether you work better with more personal attention or get nervous in front of a class, a private tutor can adjust the curriculum to your goals, interests, and progression with English.
Subtleties and Nuances of American English
Learning a new language has both moments of glory (successfully ordering your favorite meal) and awkward mistakes (failed translated efforts that end up in unintentional insults). As long as you don’t take your errors too harshly, you’ll be speaking like a true ‘Murican in no time.
Spellings & Pronunciations: Unlike America’s English-speaking neighbors across the pond (Australia and the UK), American English omits the letter “r” in words like “color,” and it also doesn’t use an “s” in “personalize.” Some of the pronunciations of words are different, such as “vitamin” in American English uses a long “i” sound, and Americans don’t typically pronounce the “h” in “herb.” If you’re new to English, you’ll learn how American pronounce and spell words in class, so no worries there.
Accents & Dialects. There are just as many dialects as there are states in the US; learn to distinguish between them. Some places do not use the letter “r” (New England), some areas speak so fast you don’t know what the person is saying (New York and New Jersey), and some places have a nice drawl and call groups y’all (the South, yee-haw!). People in the midwest call soda “pop,” and in the South, they call soda a “coke.” For those looking to learn English in USA the standard way, the central midwest states are your best bet.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Materials. This isn’t a matter of textbooks or teachers. The volume of media the United States produces provides English language learners with a base of material for learning English around the clock. The sheer number of television shows and movies is baffling, and once you throw in radios and the internet, you're surrounded 24/7. How cool is calling watching Netflix “homework”?
Flexibility. While dialects are a hindrance, the universality of English makes it useful all over the world. By choosing to study English in USA, you’ll be able to converse with people from England, Nigeria, Australia, India, and other countries that have English as an official language — or promote English as a second language. So, basically, anywhere.
English continues to be a dominating influence in the 21st century. After you learn English in USA, it will take you far beyond learning a language; it will show you the start of a connection with billions of people around the world. So, grab a hotdog, and bat your English skills out of the field!
