A Guide to Learning French in Switzerland
Locations
Considering the size of the country, it sure has a lot to offer. Switzerland consists of 26 cantons, where two global economic cities (Geneva and Zurich) are nestled. Sacré bleu, don’t stop your search there! There are lots of smaller, but equally-charming, towns that offer French courses in Switzerland. They all come with generous portions of fondue, so what more do you have to think about?
As the capital of the French cantons, Geneva offers more French vibes than an average Swiss town. Also, it is the base for UN Headquarters, with international delegates coming to Geneva. Major news items will be discussed and analyzed, with potential actions impacting the world- if that’s not pretty epic, then bon, ça va! Order a freshly-baked cinnamon bun while doing your French homework in a local café; you’re guaranteed to overhear political and economic debates. If you understand the few words of French being tossed around the line of fire, you know you’ve now officially made it as a French speaker.
Zurich may be predominantly German-speaking, but don’t let that put you off. As a major economic hub of Europe, it attracts global companies and high individuals from all around the world. As a result, a flurry of numerous languages can be heard everywhere- French being one of the most frequent. If you want to explore career options at the same time as becoming linguistically français, Zurich is the city for you; oui or nein?
As the fourth largest city in Switzerland, Lausanne is situated by Lake Geneva (especially appealing for water sport enthusiasts). Home to 19 museums and ten galleries, culture nerds can get their fix in Lausanne as well. It’s also a very easy city to get around in, with friendly locals to turn to (and an excellent opportunity to practice your French) at every corner.
Ways to Learn French in Switzerland
So you’ve chosen your location, but not sure on the type of program you want to pursue? It’s akin to choosing between fondue and raclette really - whichever you choose will be as mouth-wateringly ooh la la, your level of French will increase by mountain folds. Parfait!
Depending on the length of time you want to spend abroad, as well as how much you want to get out of the classroom combined with out on the streets, intensive French classes in Switzerland could tick your box. Weaving both formal and informal ways of teaching, the efficient Swiss teachers will make sure your French is up to scratch before they let you leave. Imagine it as candy floss wrapped with educational blackmail, with extra rainbow sprinkles on top.
Perhaps you want to throw in some resume-boosting opportunities while you’re at the economic powerhouse whilst drinking vin chaud on the slopes. Consider an internship, which combines both classroom-based learning and doubles up your work experience. Not only will you be able to practice the lingo you learnt in class, but you will also be exposed to the working Swiss culture ; hearty and long lunchtimes with multicultural colleagues (Switzerland rarely has only one nationality in the office. Considering the country itself speaks four languages, you’re in ultra luck!) is a must and it’s an aspect you won’t be able to see unless you’re part of it.
If you’re a student or miss being in university and want to mingle with delectable Swiss students, you’re covered. There is the option to learn French in Switzerland through university language courses. The University of Fribourg, nestled cozily in western Switzerland, offers students a chance to explore a quieter Swiss town; but let’s face it, for a population of 40,000, 25% are students. If you want an authentic Swiss experience, Fribourg is the one, from its historic buildings and monuments to the vibrant night life, which you’ll find plenty going on in Fribour. La vie en rose!
Tips for Gaining French Fluency
Italian, French, German and Romansh are the official languages spoken in Switzerland; the Swiss sure know how to wholly use the left side of the brain. A major bonus point of learning French in Switzerland is you’ll pick up quite the few odd words in Italian and German during your stay — tutto bene! You’ll be the cool kid in the block to say “I went to Switzerland to learn one language but came back knowing four.”
By choosing to study French in Switzerland, you are by i perfectly placed to be able to practice the French you learnt in class, out in the street with locals. The fresh baguette et fromage you buy daily from your local boulanger with a cheery arrivederci is one of many examples that you will encounter. They’re free elocution teachers too - the Swiss are so friendly they will gladly correct your words and/or pronunciation (everyone knows that French accent ain’t the easiest). From the rolling r’s to the hand gestures guaranteed to make you look like a native, situating yourself in Switzerland is a fantastic way to learn French.
Be sure to take a steady and consistent pace of learning you can maintain. French grammar is notorious of having endless rules- and just as many exceptions to the rules. The best way to keep up and improve is to take baby steps and revisiting the learning material again and again. Little by little, your fountain of French vocab will rival the nearby Alps peak you hike every weekend. Imagine the success and satisfaction you taste when you leave Switzerland richer in French than when you arrived; as delish as the best of Swiss chocolates.
Benefits & Challenges
Food Heaven. Every country has their yum dishes and one-of-a-kind drink. Switzerland has the fortune of being surrounded by world-acknowledged fine food countries, like Italy and France. Couple that with a Swiss twist... chéri(e), what are you waiting for?! Imagine the endless cheese-and-wine tastings and sample delicious homemade polenta and braised beef while conversing with multicultural buddies met on your once-in-a-lifetime journey. Bon appétit!
#MountainLife. There’s also the fact that Switzerland is surrounded by the Alps, one of the coolest mountain ranges. No matter the season, there’s incredible views and activities: hiking and mountain biking in sunny months, and skiing during the colder season. In short, being disappointed by nature in Switzerland is not very likely.
Big Bucks. It’s true: Switzerland is not the cheapest of countries. Don’t let that put you off though; it is centrally-located, meaning you’re literally within touching distance of the rest of Europe! Trains and buses to and from Switzerland are extremely affordable, while renting a car lets you see every crook and cranny of the marvel Switzerland has to offer. Europe is wonderfully easy to fall in love with; if you speak their language they’ll love you back too.
Time to make life-long, multicultural friends whilst whizzing down the Alps after a hot cider-fueled lunch ordered in flawless French. With its rich history and culture, hearty food, and simply insane geography, if you choose to learn French in Switzerland, you’ll be a happy camper. Au revoir et à bientôt.

December 13, 2023by: Munkhmandakh Jugdernamjil - MongoliaI studied at the Elfi school between December 2013 and June 2014. I really appreciated the teachers, they really listen and are very competent in working with each student. We had a good atmosphere in the class with the foreign students, I really liked it. At the end of my studies, I obtained my Delf B2 diploma. The school is not far from the train station so very practical. You will be happy there.

A great place to achieve your French language goals
October 07, 2022by: Mohamad Nasser - MalawiHaving lived in Geneva for a few years, I was tired of not being able to integrate with French speaking nationals. Thanks to the ELFI intense French courses, within less than one year, I have successfully obtained my DELF B1 certificate and with an outstanding result. I joined the ELFI intensive courses at end of A1 going into A2 level. The professors are very well experienced and are patient enough to stop and explain concepts to individuals, while still not holding back the rest of the class. The class and home assignments shared were a great resource given the fact they are relatable to daily life situations. Everyday conjugation exercises meant conjugating verbs eventually became natural. The administration is very friendly and full of knowledge enough to guide students to a clear set goal within a given time. In the future, I still plan to obtain my B2 DELF certificate and ELFI will definitely be my first choice of education.
B1-C1
August 02, 2022by: Aubrey D - United StatesI had an excellent experience at ELFI. I started in B1 with them, with the goal to pass C1 dalf. Although they did not have a C1 class. They set me up with a tutor who was absolutely wonderful. She really helped me zone in on the depths that were more nuanced in areas I found confusing such as the subjonctif and conditionnel passé. After each session she went above and beyond to send me notes, extra work in areas I was less clear on, and even more rare documentation on exceptions and uses that we aren’t often taught but are nonetheless omnipresent as we further delve into French. The teachers at ELFI are remarkable, and no matter what your level or goals are, whether there is a clear offering of a program or not to attain them, François and the school ensure you have it. Highly recommend!
ELFI is the go-to place to learn French
June 04, 2022by: Bhanuka Kirinde - Sri LankaEcole de Langue Francaise et d'Informatique (ELFI) is the go-to place if you want to learn French in an immersive environment. The course is designed to take one from absolute beginner to proficient in the shortest time possible without overwhelming students. François and the team at ELFI are so helpful with everything, and as someone who wanted to obtain a student permit to be in Geneva, they guided me in every step of the process. One of the best things is that you get to study with a group of students from all over the world and how being in a class learning a foreign language brings everyone together. The teachers are gentle and kind and will help everyone in the class progress. Even though my journey with ELFI was cut short due to me finding a temporary job, I will for sure one day return to school to complete my French language studies.
Perfect place

Professional
May 23, 2022by: Lily Tian - ChinaELFI is definitely THE most professional and responsible French school I have attended in Geneva. The director is approachable, responsive and patient. The French teachers are student-oriented, passionate and qualified. The course materials are adapted, updated and abundant. The fellow students are friendly, studious and motivated. All in all, a perfect environment for learning French. I would recommended it to anyone eager to learn the language and would definitely come back to study at ELFI again if needs be in the future.
Great experience overall, highly recommended.
March 29, 2022by: Magdy Reda - ItalyI have taken ELFI French classes twice and plan to do it again in the future. Both times were a great experience. The teachers are 100% available to any questions a student may have and the teaching methodology is consistent and reliably tested over years of experience. I have had great time and feedback from professors, another students, and the administrative staff. Physical space might be at times small but it forces interaction at attention during lessons. For those who cannot be in class, remote live classes are available via Zoom. I imagine anybody will have a great experience at ELFI and you'll learn effectively and consistently. Great experience overall, highly recommended.
Choose ELFI!
November 02, 2021by: Rachel Hedges - United StatesI considered many options for a language school in Geneva because I had two months to prepare for a DALF C2 exam. I chose ELFI because of timing, flexible scheduling and competitive pricing. Once my classes started, I found much, much more to appreciate. This little school is truly a gem. You will find enthusiastic and talented teachers, and in class you'll have the chance to work on your speaking, writing AND listening skills. Classes are not boring, and you'll feel supported and encouraged to learn. Scheduling is very flexible, and this school will work with you. You can even join classes online, which makes the classroom not only more accessible, but also allows for a truly global environment. The physical location of the school is also very convenient, as it is right next to the Cornavin train station, in central Geneva. At ELFI I was able to make great progress in a short amount of time in a super supportive and low-stress environment. I couldn't be happier with my experience and I would (and do) recommend this school to anyone who is looking to improve their French in a classroom setting. You'll find that ELFI has what you need and wants to help you achieve your goals. This is especially true if you are preparing for a DELF or DALF exam, you will definitely go to your exam feeling prepared!
This school was a GEM to find in Geneva!
October 01, 2021by: Christine Ortaliz - United StatesThis school was a GEM to find in Geneva! Being a former language teacher myself, I evaluated my first week of class with a critical eye. I was happy to find highly competent teachers that only use French for the immersion experience of this language program. They displayed good energy and ability to engage students in many interactive learning modes, (some of my favorites being writing compositions, mini-presentations, debates and games!) Mock DELF exams are provided at the end of every level for practice and personal evaluation of your level. The office staff and teachers are friendly and care for the wellbeing of all the students. The staff went above and beyond in helping me with my student visa application process, demonstrating much knowledge and experience in troubleshooting any challenges that came up. It’s a perfect environment to make new international friends if you don’t know anyone in Geneva. My classmates were all beginners in French language with me and we processed our culture shock and life’s dramas in a foreign country together. I chose it because of competitively lower tuition fees compared to other schools and was conveniently located close to my apartment and the train station, but I found a supportive home base that provided fertile ground to help me confidently grow roots in my first 7 months in Switzerland. I highly recommend ELFI!
Excellent French course in Geneva
September 10, 2021by: Vivien - SwitzerlandELFI language school provides an excellent opportunity to learn French. My teacher was brilliant and I learned a lot. I would definitely recommend this school. Very good price for value. I also enjoyed the coffee breaks were I could practice my French in an informal setting with friends from the course.
ELFI made me fall in love with French!
September 08, 2021by: Elindi de Coning - South AfricaThe course material was neatly constructed covering a variety of topics with additional resources. I especially enjoyed the enthusiasm of the teachers and the safe environment they create to encourage us to speak and learn from our mistakes. It also really depends on the amount of effort you put into it, for example, one day we brought our ukuleles to class and performed (or at least tried) the French version of 'Here comes the sun', it was so much fun! I have built great relationships with the peers and had such a good laugh at some of our efforts and answers :) I would definitely recommend ELFI because I truly believe it is money well spend in comparison to other schools.
Very effective and enjoyable!
August 05, 2021by: Rashid Khamis - IsraelWell located school close to city center, transportation and the lake. Academically they are excellent with the best teachers. There’s a lot of flexibility with classes in the morning and the afternoon, up to 5 days a week. The atmosphere is very pleasant and friendly and students come from all over the world. Administration is really helpful with anything and not just school related. Once I made the initial phone call I knew I want to study there and I was very happy with the decision.
Excellent option to study French in geneva!!
June 08, 2021by: Andrés Sierra - EcuadorI studied French in my country, but after many years of not practicing it I completely lost track of the language. After studying for 4 months with Aline and Claire, I was speaking again and I had the opportunity of polishing my grammar and take it to another level. ELFI is an excellent option for studying French in Geneva, the prices, the quality of the professors, which is superior and the readiness of the administration to make everything easier to fulfill your needs, is incomparable.
Great course and school!
February 11, 2021by: Z L - United StatesI took the intensive course here at ELFI for only a few months and I must admit, I learned MORE in 3 months than the 8 years of (junior high- high school) years of french class! Cozy school, great staff and teachers!
Family
February 04, 2021by: Elmar Shahverdili - AzerbaijanThe best language school to recommend! It's obvious that French is one of the most difficult languages to learn, however at ELFI the complexity of studies is converted into fun. Friendly teachers provide high-quality lessons together with cheerful games creating both educational and positive environment. I'd like to name Cidália and François from the administrative staff, who always have a kind approach to students and are ready to help them with any questions. Today you can also take advantage of online courses during pandemic period. If you are determined to learn French, ElFI is your best choice!

The right school for learning French!
January 26, 2021by: Alisa Volgina - RussiaI've attended the school for about two years and now have only great things to say about my experience. its convenient location, not far from Gare Cornavin, very welcoming atmosphere, open-minded administration, a strong academics program with its own developed methodology and of course the teachers who, in addition to their high professionalism, have a good sense of humour.
