South Africa - Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary

Be part of an incredible project and work with the famous Kevin Richardson, a wildlife conservationist. The project brings public awareness to the dangers facing lions and other carnivores native to South Africa. This is a rigorous project and volunteers get their hands dirty, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to join the conservation effort and help make a difference. The sanctuary sits on 1200 hectares and was transformed from an old farm. It is in constant need of maintenance and restoration. Volunteers will have an array of responsibilities including general cleaning and maintenance of the land, building walking trails, and removing any foreign plants and weeds. When volunteers are not assisting with projects for the farm, you will have the chance to interact and help with the animals. This includes cleaning their enclosures and feeding them.

The experience I had at Kevin Richardson's Wildlife Sanctuary was absolutely amazing!!! From the amazing care of the animals to the staff to the amazing people I met and volunteered with, truly wonderful! I cannot wait to return.

Program: South Africa - Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary

Kevin's priority is the quality of life for all the animals in the sanctuary. Everyone involved at the sanctuary puts their heart and soul into the daily care of these animals. Besides lions, there are also black, spotted leopards and hyenas. The staff treated us, the volunteers, with such patience teaching what needs to be done daily as well as sharing their knowledge of the country's culture and importance of the wildlife. Never have I felt so safe. Rooms with bath are very comfy. TV we watched in the common area where we also shared meals, always yummy!, and met in the morning to get a run down of the day. My only worry was my fear of spiders and only saw a couple who weren't the least bit interested in me! On the Sunday we were treated to lunch and a safari at a nearby game lodge. This is an experience of a lifetime!
