Teaching Ideas

Everyday Math

by Patricia Martinez

Students have a hard time grasping the concepts of Math subjects. One probable reason is the obscure way Math is applied to real life with the exception of arithmetic. One way I was able to handle this problem was by listing down practical uses of math I was able to encounter or think of everyday and using them as examples during my math class. Then I also started requiring my students to do this, so after we finish each topic I tell them what our next topic is and remind them of their assignment so they can also contribute to every next topic we were going to discuss. They seemed to respond positively to the idea and we were able to have lively discussions.
