Middlebury School in France: Bordeaux

The capital of the Aquitaine region, Bordeaux, was referred to as “Little Rome” in ancient times and is considered by many to be France’s most beautiful city. Its name is synonymous with the country's famous wine industry, though Bordeaux also offers a vibrant cultural life and rich historical tradition well preserved in its architecture. Now a modern and thriving city home to 230,000 residents, Bordeaux features a number of museums, public gardens, and architectural sites of note, such as its Grand-Théâtre and the Cathédrale Saint-André, as well as a thriving student culture and nightlife. While in Bordeaux, students enroll in the Université Bordeaux Montaigne (French literature, comparative literature, linguistics, history, theater, film, music, art history, archeology, geography, and philosophy) or at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques Bordeaux (political science, history, and economics). Special arrangements can be made to study at other branches of the Université de Bordeaux. Through their coursework, extracurricular activities, homestays, internships, or volunteer work, students are expected to "live the language" in Bordeaux.

An amazing semester in Bordeaux

I had an incredible semester in Bordeaux with the Middlebury Schools Abroad. I think the highlight of my 4 months there was living with my host family, they were so supportive and helpful with any questions I had about life in Bordeaux. I loved having the freedom to explore this new city on my own and with friends from the program and other international students. The French university system is very different from the United States so it definitely took some getting used to, but other than that it was so interested to learn in a new environment.
