Study Abroad Programs in Vanuatu

Isangel, the peaceful capital of Tanna Island in Vanuatu, is far from your typical study abroad destination, and that’s exactly its charm. Surrounded by volcanic landscapes, black sand beaches, and traditional villages, this remote town offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From studying marine biodiversity in clear waters to learning about kastom (custom) culture, Isangel is a place where education goes far beyond the classroom.

How to Study Abroad in Vanuatu

Prepare to Study Abroad

Set Goals

Life in Isangel moves slowly, but the learning runs deep. This is a place where hands-on experience and connection to the community shape your education.

  • Try making cultural connection a key goal. Spend time learning about kastom practices, local languages, and the rhythm of daily life in the community.
  • Set a goal to explore sustainability in real life. Whether that’s helping out in a village garden or learning how locals protect their environment, it’s all part of the experience.
  • Make space to disconnect. Living simply without big-city distractions gives you a chance to slow down, reflect, and focus on being present.

Understand the benefits

Vanuatu might not be the first place that comes to mind for studying abroad, but that’s what makes it so special.

  • Learn through real community connection. You'll spend time with Ni-Vanuatu people and experience traditions that shape daily life, from language to local customs.
  • Study in one of the world’s most unique environments. Volcanoes, reefs, and coastlines offer a natural setting for hands-on learning in fields like ecology and sustainability.
  • Keep costs low while living meaningfully. Isangel offers a simple, affordable lifestyle that supports deep focus, reflection, and cultural immersion.

Things to know

This kind of experience starts with thoughtful planning. The better prepared you are, the more you’ll get out of your time in Isangel.

  • Culture - Isangel is guided by kastom, or traditional customs, which influence everything from dress to daily routines. Being respectful, curious, and open to learning is key.
  • Connectivity - Internet access can be slow or limited. Bring offline resources and let friends and family know that communication might be occasional, not constant.
  • Language - Bislama is widely spoken, along with local languages. English is understood in some settings, but learning a few Bislama phrases will help you connect faster.

Health - Medical care is basic in Isangel. Bring any prescription medications you need and talk to your doctor about vaccinations or travel health advice before you go.

The Adventure of a Lifetime

May 16, 2024by: Emma Stanley - United StatesProgram: Seamester Study Abroad and Gap Year Voyages

Seamester was the adventure of a lifetime. I went into it not knowing how to sail but wanting to learn, and came out of it not only with that knowledge, but also with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me so many new things about myself. The staff members were amazing with their teaching and support, especially when times got rough. Their diligence ensured we all made it safely across the pacific. I also loved the places we visited, with my favorites being the Galapagos, Mo'orea, and the Panama Canal. The class schedule could be challenging at times, and waking up for watch in the middle of the night was definitely not my strong suit, but overall I had an amazing semester. I couldn't recommend Seamester enough and I'm so grateful for this wonderful experience.
