I had a really good time!

Program: Volunteer or Intern in a Medical Clinic in Peru

I had a really good time and it was really fun. It was hard to get me into the correct hospital but I understand it was due to change in directors. The staff was very welcoming and helpful but I wish I had more of a connection with the interns themselves.

Amazing experience!

I had an amazing experience volunteering with VivePeru. The staff and homestay were very welcoming, and I had plenty of opportunities to explore my career interests. When something didn’t go as planned, it was clear that the staff went out of their way to find new opportunities. Overall, I highly recommend this program to people interested in global volunteering and medicine.

The Vive Peru volunteer experience exceeded my expectations!

Volunteering with Vive Peru has been one of the best decisions I have taken in my life. Since day 1 of the program, the coordinators and staff are dedicates to your well being and cultural immersion in a new country. You are exposed to different aspects of the culture that allows you to develop a sense of appreciation for it. Working at the clinical site opened my mind to develop clinical thinking skills and taught me valuable lessons on how it is to practice medicine in an under-resourced setting, on how to deliver compassionate care and exposed me to the basics on how to make independent clinical decisions.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

My professional training has allowed me to work in similar organizations, with a high sense of solidarity and social justice based on strengthening the capacities of community members to access their rights in health and education. Working in Vive Perú allows me to feel that my work has an impact on the people and communities in which we intervene and that is very satisfying.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

After traveling to Peru in 2006 during a summer experience through the University of Notre Dame, I fell in love with Latin America and Peruvian culture. After graduation, I moved to Peru and began working teaching English and playing in the local symphony orchestra, but in my heart I really longed to do non-profit work.

Medicine. As a future health care professional in the United States, we see that we have too many resources that sometimes the U.S. does not know how to utilize them all efficiently or effectively. I wanted to go abroad to learn the different techniques, culture, and how doctors overseas are so well off with what they utilize.
