Volunteer & Trek in Nepal: Build a School for the Deaf

by: Trek Relief

Join Trek Relief for a 13-day volunteer and trekking expedition in Nepal this November — combining hands-on school construction with a remote high-altitude trek through the Annapurna foothills. The first half of the program takes you to the Kavre School for the Deaf, just east of Kathmandu. Serving 92 students, the school's kitchen doubles as a classroom every day — disrupting learning for every child on campus. Working alongside local builders and directly requested by Principal Krishna Nakarmi, you'll help construct a permanent kitchen and dining hall on the school's top-floor terrace, freeing up a dedicated classroom below. Permanently. After the build, fly to Pokhara and trek the remote Sikles Circuit — ancient rhododendron forests, Gurung villages, and the dramatic Kori Danda ridgeline at 3,800m — all the way to Kahphuche, the world's lowest glacier lake. 📍 Kavre & Annapurna Range, Nepal 🗓 November 1–13, 2026 · 13 Days 💛 Minimum contribution: $3,500 ✅ All meals, accommodation & logistics included 🤝 Led by Candice Young + Binoy Rai Sign up commitment-free at trekrelief.org/travel/nepal/kavre-school-expansion

Program Highlights

Build a permanent kitchen and dining hall at the Kavre School for the Deaf alongside local builders — directly freeing up a dedicated classroom for 92 deaf students in Nepal.

Trek the remote Sikles Circuit through ancient rhododendron forests, historic Gurung villages, and dramatic alpine ridgelines reaching 3,800m in the Annapurna foothills.

Trek Tasa to Kori Danda (3,800m). Epic ridge walking. The terrain becomes dramatic and exposed, rewarding your effort with panoramic views of the Annapurna and Manaslu massifs.

Stand at the edge of Kahphuche — the world's lowest glacier lake at 2,450m — shimmering beneath the towering ice walls of the Annapurna range on an acclimatization day hike.

An unhurried day dedicated to cultural richness, exploring traditional life in neighboring Chipli village.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need construction or trekking experience to join this trip?

No experience is required for either part of the program. The school construction work is guided by a local crew of professional builders — your role is to assist with materials, masonry, and logistics alongside them. For the trekking portion, a moderate to good fitness level is recommended as the Sikles Circuit involves 6–8 hours of hiking per day with elevation up to 4,100m. If you can manage sustained uphill walking and are comfortable with un

What does the $3,500 minimum contribution cover?

The contribution is split into two parts: $1,765 goes directly to the charitable project, covering raw building materials (brick, cement, steel), local engineering oversight, and construction logistics at the Kavre School for the Deaf. The remaining $1,735 covers all trip fees — including a one-way domestic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, all meals, traditional teahouse lodging throughout the trek, expert English-speaking guides, porters, groun

What are the key deadlines and minimum participant requirements?

Trek Relief requires a minimum of 5 participants for the trip to run. The deposit timeline is as follows: sign up as soon as possible to reserve your spot, donate or raise the initial $500 deposit by September 1, and complete the remaining $3,000 by October 1. Fundraising support, corporate donation matching, the Trek Together Fund, and work trade credit options are all available to help participants reach their goal.

What is not included in the minimum contribution?

International airfare to and from Nepal, travel insurance (required for participation), Nepal visa fees, optional personal activities outside the core itinerary, personal snacks and beverages, alcoholic drinks, laundry, tips for trekking staff, and any costs incurred due to weather delays or flight cancellations are not covered. Travel insurance is strongly recommended and required for all participants.

How do I fund my trip if I can't cover the full contribution myself?

Trek Relief offers several pathways to make participation accessible. You can launch a personal fundraising page and invite your network to contribute, check if your employer offers corporate donation matching, apply for the Trek Together Fund — Trek Relief's internal financial aid program — or earn trip credits through the Work Trade program by contributing your skills.
