8 Week Education NGO Internship in Bali
The Suwandi Foundation offers a hands-on social impact internship in Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia. We are a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit working in one community through long-term partnerships with Balinese educators and local leaders. Our mission is to use education to help children expand their opportunities and break cycles of poverty. We support community learning centers that provide English language education, computer literacy, extracurricular activities, and confidence-building opportunities alongside public school education. Interns focus on three areas: nonprofit development, English teaching, and personal growth. Participants work on a personalized social impact project, volunteer as after-school English co-teachers, and join cultural immersion activities. This is a small, non-traditional internship where participants work closely with our grassroots team, receive individualized support, and gain firsthand experience in community-driven nonprofit work.

How many hours will I spend on the project?
Our program is designed to balance meaningful work with time to explore and experience Bali. Your time includes structured program hours during the week, with time spent at the learning center, internship work and participating in program activities. You will spend approximately 15–20 hours per week teaching and 10-20 hours per week will be spent on internship work and intercultural activities. All weekends are free time for you to explore Bali!
Why do I have to pay to be in intern?
Our programs are fully inclusive and intentionally designed to be safe, structured, and impactful. Program costs go directly toward supporting the local community, as well as the administrative and operational work required to run each program. This includes safety systems and insurance, visa support, accommodation, meals, transportation, cultural activities, and on-the-ground staff.
What does a day in the life look like?
A typical day includes time at the learning center supporting classes, collaborating with staff on internship work, and engaging with students. Outside of program hours, interns often spend time exploring the local area, relaxing, or connecting with other interns. Each day is a mix of structured programming and personal time, with weekends free to travel and explore.
Will there be staff on the ground to support me?
Yes. Our local team is present throughout your program and available to support you with anything you may need, from daily logistics to unexpected situations. You will be living with our two volunteer coordinators, Mazzi and Pratt who are trained to ensure the highest safety standards!
How do you ensure ethical impact and not fall into "voluntourism"?
We are intentional about how participants engage with the community. Interns are placed in supportive roles rather than positions of full responsibility, and all programs are designed in collaboration with the local community. We prioritize respect, cultural understanding, and long-term benefit over short-term impact. All interns will receive a pre-program and on-the-ground training focused on cultural understanding and making a positive impact.
