Program Overview

Nestled in the heart of the Kéköldi Indigenous Reserve on Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast, KREA offers a rare opportunity to conduct real scientific research in one of the world's top three sites for monitoring migratory birds — where nearly six million birds pass through in a single season. Operating as an independent NGO in close partnership with the Bribrí Indigenous community, KREA combines long-term biodiversity monitoring with hands-on conservation education, giving participants a genuinely impactful role in protecting one of Central America's most biodiverse rainforests.

Designed for aspiring natural scientists and conservationists, the program welcomes volunteers into an active research environment where data collection directly informs conservation decisions. Participants join wildlife surveys, bird point counts, nighttime herpetofauna walks, and camera trap checks targeting species like ocelots, great green macaws, and Central American spider monkeys.
