Marine Conservation Volunteer – Puerto Morelos Reef

Inquire Here

Program Overview

The Puerto Morelos Reef Project offers a rare opportunity to contribute to the protection of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the world's second-largest coral reef system, located along one of the most heavily developed coastlines in the Caribbean. Volunteers work alongside a locally run NGO using rigorous scientific methods — AGRRA survey methodology — to monitor reef health, restore coral, track endangered species like spotted eagle rays and sea turtles, and run environmental education initiatives. No prior diving experience is required, making this program accessible to anyone with a good level of fitness and a passion for marine conservation.

Participants can earn up to five PADI certifications during their stay, including Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Emergency First Response, Coral Reef Restoration Diver, and Rescue Diver. Fieldwork runs Monday to Friday, roughly 35 hours per week, with one to two dives or snorkel sessions daily.
