Based in the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area, this program offers a practical introduction to ocean conservation on one of Africa’s most diverse coastlines. Sharklife is a long-standing marine conservation non-profit with an established field station in Sodwana Bay, providing a secure and professional base for all activities.
Volunteers take part in guided snorkelling sessions, intertidal and beach-health observations, turtle-nesting awareness walks (seasonal), and short workshops that build a clear understanding of local marine ecosystems.
You’ll learn how to identify common reef and coastal species, understand key conservation pressures, and develop confidence in the water under the guidance of Sharklife’s field staff. Activities are structured, simple, and purposeful—designed to offer real exposure to conservation work without requiring research experience.
The program suits anyone seeking an immersive, ethical, and accessible ocean-focused experience. Optional scuba diving and additional ocean-skills activities can be added directly through Sharklife. No prior experience is required.

What experience do I need to join?
No experience is required. The program is built for beginners, travellers, and anyone curious about the ocean. All core activities are guided, structured, and taught from the ground up, so you can arrive with zero background and still progress confidently. Many participants join specifically to build their first real ocean skills.
Is scuba diving included in the program?
Yes. The program includes scuba training and access to regular dives, with volunteers able to log up to 24 dives per month depending on conditions. Training is delivered on-site through Sharklife’s integrated operation, ensuring your diving development and conservation activities are seamlessly aligned.
What conservation activities will I join?
You’ll take part in guided snorkelling, intertidal and beach-health observations, seasonal turtle-nesting awareness walks, and short ecology workshops. These activities build your understanding of local ecosystems while giving you structured, meaningful exposure to day-to-day conservation work.
Where will I stay during the program?
At Sharklife’s established field station in Sodwana Bay. It’s a secure, professionally run base with on-site staff, structured daily activities, and direct access to the coastline. The environment is supportive, community-focused, and designed to give volunteers a safe and immersive marine experience.
Is it safe to join as a solo traveller?
Yes. Most participants arrive alone, and the field station setup is ideal for solo travellers. Staff provide clear arrival support, local guidance, and supervision throughout your stay. The routine, structure, and accommodation layout make settling in easy and safe.
