Situated in the vibrant Zulu Kingdom of South Africa, this internship provides adventurous students an exceptional opportunity to gain practical experience at a dedicated marine research field station. Participants actively contribute to every phase of our research, building essential skills through hands-on training, comprehensive learning, and immersive boat-based fieldwork out on the open sea. 

Also open to volunteers, the program includes two- to six-hour field trips focused on gathering data and swapping out equipment to support the Field Station’s ongoing projects. These excursions offer essential, hands-on exposure to the marine environment, helping participants build practical skills and gain insights that are valuable across numerous ocean-related career fields.

Our day begins with preparing the boat and equipment for sea before heading to the beach. Interns and volunteers play a crucial role in supporting beach and boating logistics. Once launched through the surf, we journey along the coastline to our study area, where we conduct in-water surveys, document sightings, and swap out equipment as needed.&nbsp;

What is a typical day like?

Absolutely! With our skilled scuba partner, beginners are welcome to start here with no prior experience and progress through courses from Open Water to Dive Master certification. Each course package includes all necessary equipment, pool training sessions, and certification fees.&nbsp;

Do you offer scuba courses?

2 – 4 weeks is just enough time to complete a scuba course and get exposure to the research components. We must tell you that 99% of students always wish they had booked for longer. 6 – 8 weeks as a Intern is a more realistic time to become familiar with the diving and boating tasks and possibly do another scuba course (advanced or rescue).&nbsp;
