About Sharklife
Founded in 2005 as a non-profit, Sharklife is committed to safeguarding marine ecosystems by conducting research, launching conservation efforts, and fostering environmental education. Working within the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area in South Africa, we partner with local authorities and research teams to gather data and create impactful conservation approaches.
Our efforts aim to ignite a passion for marine science and conservation in the next generation, with a unique highlight being our immersive marine internship program, offering hands-on experience to aspiring scientists.
Sharklife is made up of dedicated marine conservationists, researchers, and advisors who share a passion for preserving our oceans. With a wealth of knowledge and expertise, they work tirelessly to advance Sharklife’s conservation goals.

What is a typical day like?
A typical day on the marine biology training programme includes field preparation and ocean launches in the morning, followed by data work and debriefs at the field station in the afternoon. Depending on the schedule and weather conditions, interns may take part in marine surveys, scuba diving, species identification and other practical field activities. Evenings are generally spent attending guest talks, cooking together or relaxing.
Do you offer scuba courses?
Yes! Scuba diving is an integral part of our Marine Biology Internship. If you’re not already certified, you can complete your Open Water or Advanced certification as part of the programme. Rescue Diver and Divemaster courses are also available at an additional cost.
How long should I stay for?
The minimum stay for our Marine Biology Training programme is 4 weeks. We recommend staying longer if you can, as this gives you more time to gain practical experience, develop your skills and get involved in our marine research and conservation projects.
