Applied Ecology Learning Programme (AELP)
by: Naturemind
The Applied Ecology Learning Programme (AELP) is NatureMind's flagship conservation internship and volunteer programme in Krabi, Thailand. Following our "Forest to Reef" approach, participants contribute to research and restoration across mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, tropical forests, and local communities. Work alongside conservation professionals on real projects including ecological surveys, biodiversity monitoring, habitat restoration, GIS and drone mapping, water quality assessments, and environmental education. Activities vary seasonally, providing exposure to a wide range of field techniques and conservation challenges. Designed for students, graduates, and career changers, AELP combines practical experience with scientific learning. Participants staying four weeks or longer can also undertake an independent research project with staff mentorship. Whether you're pursuing a career in ecology, marine biology, environmental science, or conservation, AELP offers the opportunity to develop valuable field skills while making a meaningful contribution to ecosystem restoration in southern Thailand.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an internship and volunteering?
Both interns and volunteers participate in the same daily conservation activities and receive the same training. Internships (recommended minimum of 4 weeks) also include the opportunity to develop an independent research or applied conservation project under staff mentorship, making them ideal for university credit, dissertations, or professional development.
Do I need previous experience?
No. We welcome participants from all backgrounds. Our team provides training and guidance throughout the programme, so enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are more important than previous field experience.
What kinds of activities will I take part in?
Activities vary depending on the season, weather, and ongoing projects, but may include ecological surveys, habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring, tree planting, water quality assessments, GIS and drone mapping, environmental education, and community outreach.
Is this programme suitable for university students?
Yes. Many of our participants are undergraduate and postgraduate students in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, conservation, sustainability, geography, and related fields. We are also happy to support university
How long should I stay?
Volunteers can join from one week onwards, while internships are recommended for four weeks or longer to allow time for skill development and, where applicable, an independent research project. Longer stays provide greater learning opportunities and a deeper understanding of our conservation programmes.
