Who is eligible to apply for the medical volunteer program in Tanzania?
The program is open to medical students who are at minimum in their second year of a medicine or related degree, as well as qualified professionals with at least 6 months of relevant work experience. Participants must be 18 years or older.
How long can I volunteer and when can I start?
You can volunteer for anywhere between 2 weeks and 12 months. There is no fixed start date — you can begin at any time during the year, making it highly flexible for your schedule.
What does the registration fee cover?
The $250 registration fee (or group fee for group applicants) covers placement preparation, facilitation and coordination, airport pick-up and drop-off, accommodation, and a free 1-hour Swahili language class. A separate $25–$50 per week hospital participation fee is also required and paid to the host hospital.
Where will I be staying during the placement?
You will stay in a shared volunteer house that is clean, modern, and spacious. It includes comfortable bedding, breakfast and weekday dinners, Wi-Fi, hot showers, 24-hour gated security, housekeeping, and a personal on-site coordinator. Laundry services are available for a small additional fee.
Is it safe to travel to Arusha, Tanzania alone?
Arusha is considered a relatively open and foreigner-friendly city. Medi Trip provides a robust support system including volunteer coordinators, airport pickup, daily coordination, and supervised placements. Solo travelers are welcome, though forward planning, travel insurance, and respect for local customs are strongly encouraged.
