Program Overview

Step inside an emergency department where no two shifts are the same, resources are stretched, and clinical judgement matters.

Based in Arusha, Tanzania, this Emergency and Trauma placement gives medical, nursing and allied health participants an honest look at frontline care in a busy, resource-limited setting. You may encounter road traffic injuries, acute illness, surgical emergencies and patients arriving with conditions rarely seen at home. You will work alongside Tanzanian healthcare professionals, learning how teams assess, prioritise and treat patients when time, equipment and staffing are limited. Your level of involvement will always reflect your training, qualifications and the direction of the local medical team.

This is not about arriving as the “expert.” It is about listening, adapting and understanding how medicine is practised in a different system. The experience can challenge your assumptions, strengthen your confidence and change how you think about patient care.

You may come for the clinical experience. You will leave with a much deeper understanding of resilience, teamwork and what it means to care for someone when every decision counts.

For the second time had the time of my life!!!

I have been with meditrip to Tanzania now twice and both of the times have been amazing! I had a good time talking to Pearl for the preparations and expectations. Pearl also was a great help with discussing a topic I could use to write my thesis. When I arrived the second time it really felt like coming home. I love the home feeling in the hostel. I also met the most amazing people in the hostel who are now some of my closes friends. In the hospital I had great guidance in Kaloleni Hospital. Overall I had the most amazing experience and I can't wait to go back!!

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Medi Trip.

Who can join the Emergency & Trauma program?

The program is open to medical, nursing and allied health students, pre-med participants and qualified healthcare professionals. Your placement is matched to your education, clinical experience and professional scope, so the experience remains both meaningful and responsible.

Will I be allowed to take part in patient care?

Your level of involvement depends on your qualifications, confidence, the needs of the department and the direction of the Tanzanian clinical team. Students may observe, assist with permitted tasks and join case discussions, while qualified professionals may contribute more directly within their professional scope. No participant is promised procedures or unsupervised clinical work.

What kinds of cases might I encounter?

Emergency departments in Arusha may receive trauma, acute medical conditions, road traffic injuries, surgical emergencies and patients presenting at a later stage of illness than participants may be used to seeing. Every shift is different, and exposure depends on the realities of the department during your placement.

How does Medi Trip prepare and support participants?

Medi Trip is clinically led and locally based in Arusha. We organise your hospital placement, accommodation, airport pickup, orientation, department introduction and ongoing support. Before arrival, we also prepare you for the professional, cultural and emotional realities of working in a different healthcare system.

How the program approaches ethics and decolonised clinical exchange

We challenge the idea that international participants arrive as the authority. Tanzanian clinicians lead the placement, local systems and expertise are respected, and learning is expected to move in both directions. The goal is not to “save,” replace or take over, but to participate with humility, curiosity and professional respect.
