Volunteer at a Marine Conservation NGO in Cambodia
Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC), a community-based NGO, runs a range of research-focused programs. One of our initiatives is the Marine Mammal Project, which focuses on studying two endangered dolphin species and the critically endangered dugong. Volunteers assist with data collection by joining boat- and land-based surveys and contribute to individual identification. Our Seagrass Project involves underwater surveys in which volunteers collect essential data on seagrass meadow composition and health, documenting the species found around Koh Ach Seh. Additionally, the Seahorse Project aims to gather vital data on local seahorse populations. In addition to research activities, volunteers participate in beach and underwater cleanups, removing trash from the sea and island shorelines to support a healthier marine ecosystem. MCC operates in the Kep Archipelago—on Koh Ach Seh, a small tropical island close to the border between Cambodia and Vietnam. From here, we work closely with local authorities to support the enforcement of Cambodia’s second Marine Fisheries Management Area, a marine protected area established to preserve local marine biodiversity.

What is the day-to-day life like with MCC?
Life with MCC follows a flexible weekly schedule planned every Sunday, based on weather and boat availability. Days start with breakfast, followed by activities such as underwater surveys, early-morning dolphin surveys, reef or beach cleanups, and data entry. After lunch and a short break, afternoons may include fieldwork or laptop tasks. Evenings are social, with games, movie nights, or relaxed weekend gatherings.
What should I bring with me?
Swim wear, a rash vest or wetsuit, maybe your own diving gear if you have it, snorkel, fins and mask (all of which are also available to borrow while you are on the island), a laptop, some games, books, mostly short clothes but a pair of long pants and a hoodie won't hurt, because it can be windy sometimes.
What can I expect from this experience?
An open, close-knit community that is very warm and welcoming to everyone coming to the island. Here, you will make memories that will last you a lifetime and make friends with people from all over the world.
Where will I live?
You will live on a beautiful tropical island surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and seagrass meadows. Accommodation is provided in gender-separated bungalows shared with up to six people. Volunteers share common spaces, including the main bungalow where meals are enjoyed, work takes place, and everyone comes together in the evenings, as well as a shared kitchen.
How are the living conditions?
Life on the island is simple and off-grid. You will share a room with other volunteers and experience basic island living. There is no running water, so showers and toilets use buckets. Electricity is provided by a generator in the evenings, allowing you to charge devices, with additional solar power available at times during the day.
