A Memorable stay at an Alpaca Farm

March 20, 2026by: Isabel Tikka - Sweden

Program: Farmstay New Zealand

5

My time abroad was truly a fantastic experience that I will always remember. I had the opportunity to stay and work at an alpaca farm, which was something completely new and exciting for me. During my stay, I learned a lot about this unique animal species—their behavior, how they are cared for, and their importance to the farm. One of the most special parts of my experience was living with a host family who were incredibly welcoming and kind. They made me feel at home from the very beginning, and I am very grateful for their warmth and hospitality. Through this experience, I also gained a deeper understanding of the local culture, which made my time abroad even more meaningful. It was not only about the work, but also about connecting with people and learning new perspectives. Overall, it was an unforgettable journey, and I can definitely imagine going back again in the future. If you have the chance, I really recommend to work abroad on a farm!

Working in a tropical paradise

I spent a total of 5 months in Australia and did an internship in an Australian hostel for about 3 months. I arrived in Australia at the end of November and started working on one of the Great Barrier Reef islands a few days later. I was an intern supporting the reception team and worked 2 days a week. My main tasks included checking guests in and out, sorting car and snorkel hires and answering calls and emails as well as helping out on the bar whenever needed. I’ve never worked a reception job before but everyone was super friendly and helped me whenever I had any questions. As I was living on site, I also quickly made friends among the other staff and spent most of my free time with them. After a few weeks I decided to pick up some paid shifts in housekeeping mostly to keep myself busy but also to get a little extra money for my travels after my internship. At the very beginning of my time in Australia, I was really overwhelmed by basically everything - it was too hot, too many people and everything seemed so exhausting. However I am really glad that regardless of how I felt, I still made an effort to go out with my roommates, I still made sure to spend lots of time with all the other staff and now, a few months later, they are like my family far from home and I couldn’t be happier to have met them. Apart from the social aspect, living and working on a tropical island feels unreal as well - waking up with a beach right in front of my room or spending my days off doing hikes where I see koalas is something I could’ve never imagined back home. I would definitely recommend doing an internship like that or working abroad for some time, because it not only teaches you what having a job in a different country is like, it also is a one in a lifetime experience of meeting people from all around the world, all in the same situation as oneself.

I had a very fun time.

My journey through the Rocky Mountains has been absolutely unforgettable. Being surrounded by towering peaks, endless forests, and fresh mountain air every single day feels unreal. The landscapes are breathtaking and constantly remind me how powerful and beautiful nature can be. Working at a ski resort makes the experience even better. I spend my days in the mountains, meet people from all over the world, and enjoy a job that never feels boring. The mix of outdoor work, great teamwork, and unforgettable ski days has made this adventure one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life.

Amazing time in New Zealand!

I used Internex in 2024 as I wanted to live abroad while also gaining practical work experience. Internex provided the perfect opportunity to move to New Zealand while undertaking an internship. From my first meetings with Chris, he was extremely helpful and made the daunting decision to move abroad feel much easier and manageable. I started my internship in August 2024 with a social work organisation working with women and children. I felt fully supported by the team and began shadowing their work right away. After a couple of months, I was very excited to be given the opportunity of a job with the organisation. This meant extending my time in New Zealand, which I was very grateful for. My job involved conducting home visits with families across Auckland who needed emotional and practical support. I felt privileged to be working alongside great social workers, and I gained experience from observing their practice. This experience I was able to gain, helped me find employment in the area I was interested in when I came home in May 2025. I was also assigned a wonderful homestay by Internex. My homestay made me feel so welcome and contributed to making my time in New Zealand so great. I am grateful to Internex for providing this homestay as having a safe place to stay was very important to me. Overall, I had an amazing time living and working in New Zealand and I am so thankful for the team at Internex for making it possible! I would recommend using their services to find interesting internships that can lead to exciting opportunities, all while feeling fully supported to experience the wonderful country of New Zealand.

My time here in Canada is wonderful, I got interviewed by Internex Pacific to work in Hospitality at a Ski Resort, so I always meet new people. As a Restaurantspecialist with experience on a cruiseship, I already saw much of the world, but I can for sure say Canada is one of my favourite places also because of the people living here. Living here in Invermere at a Lakehouse is awesome, because the owner are really friendly and we have much space around the house.

Best decision

Taking part in this program was honestly one of the best decisions I made for my gap year. The team helped place me in a casual Guest Service/Reception role at a hostel in Byron Bay, and the whole process was smooth and supportive from start to finish. When I first arrived, I worked casual hours on the front desk—checking guests in, answering questions, helping with bookings, and making sure everyone felt welcome. It was a great way to ease into the job, settle into the area, and get comfortable with the hostel environment. After a some time, I was offered full-time hours, which meant more responsibility and more chances to really get involved in the day-to-day running of the hostel. I handled everything from guest check-ins and maintaining common areas and general customer service. It was busy, fun, and no two days were the same. One of the best parts was getting to live on-site with the other staff. It created an instant community—everyone was friendly, supportive, and always up for a surf, a sunset walk, or a spontaneous night out. Living where you work made life so easy, and it really felt like a little family away from home. And Byron Bay… what a place to spend a gap year. On my days off, I’d go to the beach, hike up to the lighthouse, try new cafés, explore the markets, or go for a surf. The town has such a relaxed, positive energy, and it’s impossible not to fall in love with the lifestyle. If you’re thinking about doing a working holiday in Australia, I can’t recommend this program enough. Having help with the placement, the support network, and the chance to step straight into a job and community made the whole experience stress-free and incredibly rewarding. It’s the perfect way to meet new people, gain work experience, and enjoy everything Australia has to offer. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.

When I arrived in New Zealand in September, I was welcomed incredibly warmly. The accommodation in Auckland was great, and there were many people who were about to start the same adventure, which made it very easy to make connections quickly. I also received a lot of help when buying my car, which I really appreciated. About a week and a half after arriving, I drove to my job with my car. I was welcomed just as warmly at the golf club. everyone showed me around, explained how everything works, and introduced me to the place where I would be living. Two days later, I had a wonderful first induction day, and ever since, everyone has been extremely kind and supportive. On my days off, I also had plenty of time to explore the surroundings and do a few activities.

On my days off i loved to enjoy going to the beach. My first evening in Auckland.Exploring the surroundings of my new home.

Professional Internship Experience

Through this program I was able to gain valuable professional experience in working within the non-profit sector. Internex was able to pair me with an internship experience that was truly worthwhile and fulfilling. They also provided excellent support in navigating New Zealand and especially Auckland, where my internship was placed. Throughout the experience Internex was super supportive and available for any questions or concerns that may arise during that time and even before I arrived to make sure that the transition would be successful. Because of their support I was able to experience and explore the amazing country of New Zealand while also creating professional growth.

Professional Internship Abroad

Living in New Zealand has been a deeply rewarding experience; one that offered not just professional development, but a true sense of connection. Internex placed me at a government-affiliated training institution where I contributed to projects in digital learning and assessment design. Outside of work, I chose a homestay with a kind and welcoming couple who made me feel like part of the family. Their generosity and warmth created a home away from home and gave me a deeper appreciation for Kiwi hospitality. Renting a car made weekend adventures easy, and the balance between professional engagement and personal exploration was just right. This experience reminded me how energising it is to live in a new environment, and how much growth comes from feeling both challenged and cared for.

WIL - Best choice for students from abroad

The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has been one of the most valuable components of my academic journey to date, primarily due to the university’s intensive support and structured guidance throughout the placement process. This framework not only enabled me to establish meaningful connections with members of the New Zealand workforce and to experience a welcoming and supportive workplace culture, but it also consistently provided important stimuli for self-reflection. As a result, I have gained not only professional and intercultural competencies, but also valuable insights into my academic and career aspirations. These include a growing interest in undertaking further placements as well as the decision to pursue specific courses within my degree programme.

I started into my farmstay with no expectations really and I found everything I was ever hoping to find. Many people wish they knew they where in 'their good old days' when they happened and not afterwards and I can say, I knew while I was living them. The past 9 months in New Zealand were the best time I ever had in my life. And without Internex they wouldn't have happend. So thank you to the team of Internex. You did such an amazing job with everything.

During my gap year, I had the incredible opportunity to work abroad in the Canadian mountains. Surrounded by amazing landscapes I gained hands-on experience in a dynamic environment. Whether assisting guests at a ski resort or living in the mountains, I developed valuable skills in teamwork, adaptability, and communication. The process for applying for an internship was made really easy as I was offered all the help I needed. This experience helped me grow personally but also professionally and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about doing an internship abroad.

In October 2023 I did an internship in New Zealand to improve my English skills and to get to know a new company in a different industry. Therefore, this program helped me to find the best company. I'm glad I traveled with Internex. The program saved me from having to find a hostel and an internship on my own. I also met a lot of other people who also traveled with Internex, so I was able to make new friends.. This programm also organized some common events to talk together and to get to know each other better. Overall, it has been a great experience working with Internex!

Being the first time I’d gone overseas on my own I was nervous and not sure where to start. I had multiple communications with Internex via online calls and emails, in which they provided all information I needed and reassured me on the uncertainties I had. As someone who loves the outdoors, Internex found the perfect job for me as a lifeguard at a beautiful location in the South Island of New Zealand. I’ve made great friends since being here and been able to do loads of travelling around the South Island. Even since arriving they have assisted me with bank accounts etc and I cannot fault the communication one bit. I would not hesitate to recommend Internex to friends and family as well as anyone looking to spend time abroad. With work and accommodation sorted and help with visas, bank accounts, insurance etc. it really has been a completely stress free, exciting experience.

Even before graduating High-School in the summer of 2022 I knew I wanted to spend the Winter working in Canada. I thoroughly searched the internet and came across a german organisation that is partnering with Internex Pacific. I started planning with Internex and before I knew, I was deep inside the Rocky Mountains serving people drinks and Food while always being able to watch people Ski and also beig able to Ski whenever I am available. The communication with Internex was really easy and always helpful whenever I had questions. Internex hepled me to get settled with a job and accomodation. Through this accomodation and because we were able to contact people who chose Internex as well I was able to find a girl who was going to the same resort and who was catching the same flights as me. Having Roommates also helped getting in touch with people, so I am really greatful I got set up with accomodation as well. Working in such a beautiful place was a blessing and I am thankful for the easy communication Internex offered. I would choose to travel with Internex again!

Once in a lifetime experience

Back in 2022, I was about to be done with Uni and wanted to find an internship oversees to gain first work experiences and travel while working. I found a German organization who transferred me to Internex. I had a first skype interview to get to know the organization and see about my options in my working field. I studied life science technologies and wanted to work in a cosmetics/detergent/cleaning company to work in the lab. Chris (Director of Internex) was super great and told me about all my possibilities and where I could stay. I felt really good about choosing Internex after. Then he found a fitting company for me and organized a skype meeting to see if we were a great fit. Which we were indeed. After I signed my internship contract Chris found me a fitting home stay. I chose a home stay because I wanted to see the Kiwi culture and get to know some people. There was also the option to stay in a single room at a hostel in the central. My home stay was a perfect match and I had a really lovely time staying at their house. They even took me on little trips along the area. The organization offered me help sending me insurance websites and booked a transfer to my home stay. They also help ypu open a NZ bank account, but I did not need that. Once I got to New Zealand, we also had a welcome seminar to learn about the culture, how to find our ways here and get to know different people. Before getting to NZ I was really scared to not find any friends, but due to the welcome seminar I found lots of new contacts. I went on several trips with them which was really nice! The company I did my internship at was a perfect match. All of the staff were super friendly, and I'll definitely miss working there. I worked in the lab on new formulations, formulation changes and everything regarding the research and development. It was definitely exactly what I hoped my internship to be! Overall, I had an amazing experience here and I am happy that I chose Internex as organization to come over here! I would definitely recommend them to other people wanting to do an internship.

Living my best live in Canada ??

My time here in Canada started in mid-October 2022 :) But I was glad that I already knew at that point that I was going to Banff and that I could work at Sunshine Village in the rentals. So I was able to take care of where my year abroad was going from home, which made everything much easier I love skiing and at that point I really wanted to improve my English skills, so what could be better than a stay abroad in the Rockies, where I have skiing as a hobby and can still work in rentals at the same time. ? In addition, the nature here in Banff is incredibly beautiful and definitely recommended. In my free time I love of course skiing, ice skating in lake Louise or just walking in the beautiful nature. Banff also offers many wonderful restaurants and pubs where you can meet up with friends in the evening. I'm glad I chose internex and can have such a great time in Banff as a result.

When I graduated college in Belgium in June 2022 I knew that I wanted to go out and explore more. Since I had done my internship in Vancouver from February - June 2022 (also with Internex) I already had had a small taste of the Canadian life and I really enjoyed it. That's why I decided to come back on a working holiday visa, but I had no clue where I wanted to work. The only thing that I knew for sure was that I wanted to live close to Vancouver to keep in touch with my old friends. After reconnecting with Internex, they suggested me I could do a job in a ski-resort. I had zero experience in skiing or boarding so I was a bit sceptical at first, but I decided to just go for it. There were multiple resorts I could choose, but there was one resort in particular that immediately caught my attention. It was a smaller resort, close to Vancouver and it has been one of the best decisions I ever made in my life! I worked as a lift operator and had the chance to work with amazing people in an amazing environment and I could ski multiple days a week. I am really glad I made this decision and would recommend everyone to do the same!
