So worth it! Have fun, make an impact :)

This was a truly incredible experience.
During the week expect to volunteer from 8-2, but make the most of this time! Our volunteering was often on the beach, or involved meeting and working alongside locals on various projects, but was always fun and well-suited.

The accommodation is lovely; there is a slight issue with location but if you travel around with other people then sharing the cost of an Uber/Lyft is a great idea. Oahu is a small island anyway, so you're never too far from amenities or landmarks.

Be open-minded so that you're willing to change your lifestyle when you get home. After learning about the threat of plastic pollution, you'll realise that small changes like using a bamboo toothbrush or not using a straw are so easy, yet have a great impact. Also be open to forming new friendships; I am currently in Vancouver with a person I met while on this placement, and part of the fun in volunteering is getting to know people from different backgrounds!

I really recommend this to anyone- IVHQ is happy to help with anything, so if you have any questions at all just ask

Hi Kat, Thanks for sharing. We are stoked that you had a truly incredible time in Hawaii! We are also thrilled to hear that you formed new friendships and are continuing to make small changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce plastic pollution. Thanks for your recommendation and for being a great volunteer!

Hawaii beach conservation

I took part in a two-week trip to Oahu Hawaii working with Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii. Prior to arriving to the trip I wasn't entirely sure what my group was going to be doing. Soon after arriving though everything came together. The accommodation was in the country but since it was an island you didn't have to go very far to find something to do. Near the house was a beautiful hike that led up to a waterfall and the bus stop to Waikiki and Honolulu was at the end of the street. Getting to visit and help out the local people was the best part of the entire trip. It was amazing to now that you are taking part in a centuries old tradition and keeping that tradition alive for years to come. Overall it was extraordinary.
